Enrichment – Safety squad

This week, safety squad had an introduction to fire safety. We discussed positive ways that open fire supports us in our daily lives; such as keeping us warm in the winter or on a summer evening and cooking or toasting marshmallows on a campfire or BBQ. We then discussed the dangers of fire and learnt ways to stay safe:

Stop, drop and roll if your clothes catch fire.

Stay low to avoid smoke inhalation in a house or building fire.

Call for help and do not hide.

Children then engaged in a variety of activities to consolidate their learning. Some children looked for fire hazards in the bedroom and designing a safer one, some children made fire safety posters to display their learning and some of the older children decided to design a fire evacuation plan should they discover a fire in their home.

All children have been tasked with checking their smoke alarms are working when they return home.

Enrichment – Safety squad

This week our new safety squad enjoyed making a list of important and interesting topics that we would like to cover during our time together. This included fire safety, water safety and road safety but also other topics such as staying safe around machinery.

We then paired up and walked around the school, looking for features that keep us safe such as fire exits, fire extinguishers, safeguarding posters and the features inside the accessible toilet.

Class 1’s Christmas Dinner

Class 1 thoroughly enjoyed their Christmas Dinner today. They wore their Christmas jumpers and Christmas hats into the hall and listened to Christmas music as they ate.

Children had the opportunity to try lots of festive foods such as turkey, cranberry sauce, pigs in blankets, roasted parsnips, and mince pies.

Thank you very much to the kitchen team for all their hard work, the food was delicious!

Enrichment – sewing

This week in sewing, the children enjoyed making gingerbread men. Children had to concentrate hard and persevere as they practiced the skill of a running stitch.

Enrichment – Cooking club

This week, cooking club have enjoyed making pizzas.

They showed resilience and perseverance when stretching out their dough as it was quite sticky!

Once children had perfected the shape of their pizza, they put their tomato purée and cheese on top.

Bon Appetite!

Enriching group – Eco Club

This week in Eco Club, we have thought carefully about why water is important tp us and our planet as well as how to preserve water.

Children held a circle time discussion to talk about why water is important to living things on our planet. They said things like; ‘for us to drink’, ‘for fish to breathe’, ‘for us to wash and brush our teeth’, ‘to keep plants and trees alive’.

We then thought about things that were good for preserving water such as using waterbutts and turning off the tap whilst brushing our teeth, plus things that are not good for saving water such as ignoring leaky taps.

Enrichment group – cooking

This week, the children in cooking group enjoyed using their senses to explore a variety of exotic fruits such as; grapefruit, passion fruit, dragonfruit, papaya, kumquats, lemons and limes.

They demonstrated great fine motor skills as they chopped, peeled and squeezed their fruit.

Children also used a range of vocabulary such as ‘juicy’, ‘tart’, ‘sweet’ and ‘sour’ to describe what they could see, taste, feel and smell.

This was a great opportunity to experience fruits they may not usually encounter in their daily diets.

To finish, children made a list of the fruits that they would love to include in their ideal fruit salad.

Enrichment – safety squad

This week, safety squad focussed on water safety.
We thought carefully about how to stay safe near ponds and canals and learnt a song about holding hands with a grown up and taking two steps back.

We then thought about staying safe at the beach. We looked for dangers that could be found at the beach and discussed how to stay safe. The children then made posters to display their ideas.

Finally, the children received certificates.
