Enrichment Fridays- Singing

Today in Singing for Enrichment Fridays it was disco week! We looked at the origins of disco music and found out it is short for the word discotheque, the French word for a type of dance. It started in the 70’s and has been popular ever since. We saw how disco music has a fast tempo, a strong beat and is happy because its all about making people dance.

After we learnt about the history, we then learnt the songs:

‘Boogie wonderland’ by Earth, Wind and Fire

‘Don’t stop til you get enough’ by Micheal Jackson

‘Murder on the dance floor’ by Sophie Ellis-Bexter

‘Cha cha slide’ by DJ Casper

‘Firework’ by Katie Perry

‘Gangham Style’ by PSY

It was amazing to see how the fashion style had changed over time and also people’s dance moves!

Pop Music Updates Worldwide - YouTube

Today in Singing for Enrichment Fridays it was Pop week! We looked at the origins of pop music and that it came from the word ‘popular’, as it is music that the masses enjoy. Before we began to sing, we looked at how music has changed overtime. We found out about music from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 90’s, before delving into music from 2000 onwards. The children were fascinated to see how clothing and the style of music changed in each decade and not all pop music is the same. Here are some of the songs we sang:

Bill Haley & His Comets – Rock Around The Clock (1955) HD

Elvis Presley – Jailhouse Rock (Music Video)

Elton John – Your Song (Top Of The Pops 1971)

Spice Girls – Wannabe (Official Music Video)

Miley Cyrus – Party In The U.S.A. (Official Video)

Shakira – Try Everything (Official Video)

Music lessons- let’s get down with the cornets

We have started learning to play the cornets in Year 3 and 4. We have had our first lesson on how to make a sound on the trumpet and then started to learn the song Hot Cross Buns. We can’t wait to see what we will be able to play by the end of the 10 weeks!

Enrichment Fridays- Singing

Today in Singing for Enrichment Fridays it was musical week! We looked at the origins of musical theatre and it was amazing to know that even in Ancient Greek and Tudor/Elizabethan times plays included music. We even saw how William Shakespeare included songs in his works. We saw how the actors/actresses have to change their voices to suit the character they play, so musicals differ in styles. Before we began to sing, we looked at the different jobs in musical theatre. We found out about what directors do, musical directors, costume designers and chorographers. All of these jobs are very important in musical theatre and we even looked on Google maps where The West End was, where most musical shows are shown in London.

After we learnt about the history, we then learnt the songs:

‘I just can’t wait to be king’ from The Lion King

‘When I grow up’ from Matilda

‘Defying Gravity’ from Wicked

It was fascinating to sing the songs and see how the actors/actress then sung them on the West End.

Enrichment Fridays- singing

This week it was rock week! We learnt about where rock music came from, then saw how it has changed over time. We sang a range of songs including:  Queen, Bon Jovi, The Journey, The Beatles and Imagine Dragons just to name a few.
It was great fun!

Enrichment Fridays- Singing

This week was Country music week!

We looked at where country music came from in the world, what instruments are used in country music, and how it is still popular today. We first listened to original country music, followed by John Denver’s “Take me Home” and finally modern songs like Taylor Swift’s first album. We found out that she first began her music career at the age of 15 singing country like “Love Story” before turning to Pop. Everyone was very excited to find out that Love Story was based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and some people said they were even going to write their own songs based on the books they are reading in class.

We finished by singing and learning the dance moves to Steps “5,6,7,8”. It was great fun!

Christmas Fair

This week in Class 5,6 and 7 we have made things for the school Christmas Fair. We had great fun and raised a lot of money for the PTA. We had to design and package, create a budget and then sell our produce at the fair. We even added our allergy information for our customers.

Enrichment – Singing

Today in Enrichment Friday we looked at the singer Brenda Lee who is a famous American Singer in the 50’s. We found out about the origins of ‘Rocking Around The Christmas Tree’ which she sang when she was only 13! We found out that the song takes place at the “Christmas party hop,” a festive “sock hop” where teenagers would take off their shoes and dance which was popular during the 1950s. Johnny Marks, who specialised in writing Christmas songs, wrote the song (along with ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’) when he was 50.

We then learnt the song: Brenda Lee – Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree (Official Lyric Video) and enjoyed dancing as we sang like they would have done when the song was first released! Perfect for getting us into the Christmas spirit!
