In Science we were learning about the human lifecycle, and how we have changed from babies through to toddlers and then now. We also predicted how we are going to look when we are older. If you have any baby pictures that you would like to bring in to see how we have changed from babies that would be really helpful!

Next week to end our History topic of The Great Fire of London we will be having a special visitor: A Firefighter! He will be coming in to tell us lots of information about working as a firefighter, and also re-enacting how the fire spread on Pudding Lane using our cardboard houses that we created.
If you do NOT want your child’s house to be used in the demonstration please let me know.

Class 3 Weekly Update

Dear parents/carers,

What a fantastic week in Class 3!

In Maths, Year 1s have been looking at creating fact families using part-whole models, to write their own addition and subtraction equations for the fact family. Year 2s have been subtracting 2 two-digit numbers using base ten to support their learning. Both Year 1 and 2 will be starting their new topic in Maths next week which is Geometry.

In Science we have been looking at the basic needs of animals, in particular the pets we have at home! We wrote lots about their basic needs such as: food, water, love, attention, shelter, warmth, owners. If you have a pet at home, we would love to have some pictures of the children with their pets for our display board. Please feel free to send them in next week, Thank you.

In English we have began looking at a new book Toby and The Great Fire of London, which links well to our history topic. This week we have been looking at the features of a diary entry in preparation to write our own next week.

In D&T we had a look at fire engines and their features, we were able to label these different features as well. Lots of children had seen a fire engine before, and some had even been in a fire engine which is amazing too. The children were using lots of prior knowledge during our discussion of what they knew fire engines had, which has helped support their learning.

In RE we have been learning about Judaism and the religious celebrations that Jewish people have. This week we have been learning about Hannukah, why it is so important to Jewish people, and how they celebrate it.

In Music, we have been learning about Orchestral Instruments. This week we have named the instruments within an orchestra, and sorted them into their correct families which are: Strings, Woodwind, Brass or Percussion.

  • The children have been given a home project to complete by Thursday 26th of January linked to our topic the Great Fire of London.
  • The children will no longer have a slip in their reading records that tells you which sounds they are learning that week. You will be able to see what sounds the children have been learning in their spelling homework on seesaw.
  • Children will be bringing home a class library book to share with you over the weekend.
  • New reading books will be issued on Monday.
  • Homework is set on Seesaw every Monday and needs to be completed by the following Monday. Any issues with Seesaw please let me know.

Class 3 Weekly Update

Dear parents/carers,

What a great first week back in Class 3!

On Wednesday we had a ‘wellbeing day’. This involved discussions around ‘the 5 ways to wellbeing’ provided by the charity Mind; noticing, connecting, giving, being active and learning. We started the day by learning what is meant by wellbeing and thinking about ways to keep our minds and bodies healthy. We then looked at each of the steps in detail, thinking about how our ‘growth mindset’ and ‘positive aspirations’ approaches within school support our learning and wellbeing. Growth mindset is embedded throughout our curriculum and links to Class Dojo. We also thought about the ways we are active at home and at school, taking part in an indoor Cosmic Yoga session – this is something which can be easily accessed through Youtube if this is something you would also like to do at home. We then talked about the importance of taking time to reflect to notice all of the positive things in our life and everything we can be thankful for. Connecting and giving linked well to experiences the children may have had over the Christmas holidays. We talked about the friends and family we may have connected with during our time off and the wonderful things we may have done together. We also thought about giving in a sense of giving things other than gifts. Although it feels great to receive a gift, the children also appreciated the value of giving other things to show love such as cards, pictures, hugs, compliments and giving time to each other.

Children also took part in team building activities to further develop collaboration and foster strong relationships. Children also had the opportunity to review our new behaviour policy which has been inspired by the work of Paul Dix. Our school rules are; ready, respectful, safe. We use positive reinforcement and restorative conversations to embed our morals and ethos, encouraging children to make the right choices. We are still using our Class Dojo reward system and this has now been embedded throughout school.

We have started our new topic this half term which is Fire! Fire!, and we will be learning all about the Great Fire of London. There will be a history focus where children will learn about the key events relating to the event, understand why it took so long to put out the fire and the historical changes in approaches to house construction and fire fighting seen today. We will also have a focus on fire safety where we are hoping to receive a visit from the local fire service. We started our topic this week by creating a timeline of the events to see what happened.

In Science we have started our new topic of Animals, and learnt all about the basic needs of animals. Lots of children in class were telling us about their pets and how they look after them at home!

Today, we visited Shawbury Moat as we did not get chance to last half term for our Castles topic. We had a great time spotting where the drawbridge would have been, and what sort of shape the dwelling would have been. Lots of children said they were going to take their grown-ups there over the weekend!

Reminders:

  • PE lessons will now be on Tuesdays and Thursdays- Children will need to come into school wearing their PE Kit: white polo top, school jumper/cardigan, trainers, and grey, black or navy bottoms.
  • We have been assessing the children’s phonics this week, from Monday they will begin their new group and bring home their new reading book.
  • Remember to bring bookbags, coats and water bottles into school every day.
  •  Children will be bringing home a class library book to share with you over the weekend.

Have a lovely weekend!
