Writing Competition for 9 to 11 year olds

Dear Parent/Carer,

Please see the email below from Brookfield Education regarding a competition they are running.

Brookfield Education and Training is a professional aviation training company and the organiser of The British Aviation Experience, which introduces young people to the exciting world of aviation and the many careers it offers. Our parent company, Brookfield Aviation International, has been supplying pilots and engineers to airlines worldwide since 1993.

This year, we are delighted to launch a national creative writing competition for children aged 9-11.  Schools across the UK are invited to take part.

Prize for the Winners

Three winners will be selected. Each winner will be invited, together with a parent or guardian, to enjoy a full day aviation experience at Oxford Airport, including:

  • A flight in a light aircraft (Provided by LS Airmotive – Oxford Airport)
  • Visits to an aircraft facility
  • A control tower and fire station tour (Provided by Oxford Airport)
  • An aeroplane simulator session
  • Presentation of winner’s trophy
  • Meals and transport provided

All activities will be fully supervised, and all instructors involved are DBS checked.

In addition, we will donate £500 to the school fund of each winning entrant.

The Writing Challenge: Brookie’s Adventures

Participants are invited to write a short story, poem, or song lyric about Brookie, our mascot, who is half captain and half aeroplane, his brother who is half-engineer, half-aero engine, and his wife and family, who travel the world exploring new places, new ideas and the future of flight. Whether they are helping passengers on an important journey, discovering new aviation technology, solving a problem in the skies, or imagining what aircraft might look like in years to come, they can have limitless adventures, from flying passengers between airports to exploring the North Pole, outer space, or even the depths of the ocean. The only limit is a child’s imagination.

A selection of entries will be published in an online book titled Brookie’s Aviation Adventures, and selected authors will also receive a National Book Token.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Through this competition, we hope to inspire the next generation of pilots, engineers, and aviation professionals, while giving young writers the opportunity to have their creative work recognised and published.

How to Enter

Entries should be submitted by 1 June 2026, with winners selected and notified by 30 June 2026.

The prize aviation experience day will take place on 30 July 2026.

Message from Shropshire Council for year 6 parents

Good Morning

REFERENCE:  FREE SCHOOL TRANSPORT APPLICATIONS – SEPTEMBER 2026

Please can we ask you to remind all Year 6 parents that the deadline for applying for free school transport to their child’s allocated secondary school is 31st May 2026.  Parents/carers can apply online at Secondary | Shropshire Council  Alternatively, applications can be submitted by telephoning our Customer Services Team on 0345 678 9008.

For insurance purposes, and to ensure accurate loadings on all our school contracted vehicles, access to school transport is not permitted until entitlement has been confirmed by us, and any applications submitted after this date cannot be guaranteed that their application will be assessed in time for September, as we receive a much higher volume of application forms and/or enquiries during this period.  Therefore, should their application form be submitted after this date, the Authority may be unable to provide transport provision from the beginning of the Autumn Term, and parents/carers will need to make their own transport arrangements whilst their application is being assessed.

UKS2 – careers afternoon

On Friday, Upper Key Stage 2 had two exciting visitors come in to speak with the children about their jobs. One visitor works in Air Traffic Control,  and the other works with overhead lines for the National Grid. They shared lots of interesting information about what they do, including the equipment and clothing they use at work. The children were very engaged, asked thoughtful questions, and showed great curiosity throughout the sessions. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to learn about different careers and real-world roles.

Year 5 and 6 Careers Afternoon

This week, our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils had an exciting opportunity to learn about future careers through visits from two special guests. We were delighted to welcome a children’s nurse, who spoke to the children about her important role in caring for young patients. She shared how she became a nurse, the skills needed and how rewarding it is to help others. The children asked thoughtful questions about working in a hospital.

We were also joined by a Dealer Principal from Greenhous, who works with DAF lorries. He gave the pupils an insight into the world of transport and logistics, explaining how his role helps keep businesses moving. To make the visit even more memorable, he brought a real lorry with him! The children were thrilled to see it up close and had the chance to explore the vehicle and learn how it operates.

Welcoming guests to our school to talk to the children about their careers broadens their understanding of the wide range of careers available to them in the future.

Year 5/6 carers afternoon

Year 5 and Year 6 had special visitors come in to talk about their careers. One visitor was a social worker who explained how she supports young people and families. The children even tried an activity that she might use with the young children she works with, which helped them understand her job better. Another visitor worked in IT and spoke about how technology is used in different workplaces. The pupils enjoyed learning about these careers and asking questions about the visitors’ jobs.

Careers event – Year 5 and 6

Today we were lucky to have two visitors come in to talk to the children about their jobs. One visitor was a student teacher who shared her journey so far to becoming a teacher. She explained her first career and what she studied and then went on to explain to children how she is now training to become a teacher. Our second visitor was a paramedic who talked about the important work they do helping people in emergencies and keeping the community safe. The children really enjoyed hearing about both careers and asking lots of thoughtful questions.
