Class 2 – Snow day update!

Good morning parents/carers/children,

What an exciting day!

As a result of the school closure, we have uploaded some maths, literacy, and science tasks for the children to access at home through the Seesaw app. We understand that children will be eager to get outside and play in the snow, so our science activities link to some snow day fun!

Reception children have been writing sentences from their current text ‘Lost in the Toy Museum’. Today I would like you to think about your favourite part of the story. Your task today is to draw me a picture of your favourite part and then write me a sentence to describe what is happening. I will upload a picture of our sound mat to support you.

In literacy, Year 1 children have begun to gather research to create a fact-file on shops in our local community. Yesterday the children worked in pairs to research two shops and have begun to record their findings. Today we would like children to continue their research and write a few sentences about their findings. When gathering information think about what service they provide, the opening times, where they are located and who may visit them.

Reception maths. Reception children have been working very hard on their doubles and I am amazed by their speedy recall! We have also begun to look at odd and even numbers. Your task today is to upload me a picture of your favourite toys and talk about what odd and even features it might have. (for example, a car has 4 wheels – this is an even amount. A doll has two arms, this is an even amount. A teddy bear has one nose – this is an odd amount).

Y1 maths. Children are consolidating their knowledge on addition and subtraction within 20. They have learnt a number of methods to support their learning, such as using a number line and using concrete resources in a part, part, whole model. Today we are asking children to complete missing number problems. If you have access to BBC Iplayer, children can watch the numberblocks episode ‘The Legend of Big Tum’ (season 3, episode 18) to support their understanding. Children can then use their number line to find the difference in order to understand the missing number. If they are finding this concept difficult, children could use everyday objects (such as dry pieces of pasta or small toys) and a drawn copy of the part, part whole model to find the missing number. Children should collect the total amount of items and then set aside the known part in order to find the missing part. For example, in the equation 8 + ___ = 12, children should collect 12 objects, set 8 aside as the known part and then count how many objects are left to find the missing part. Alternatively, children using a number line should start at 8 and see how many jumps are required to get to 12.

Have a great day! Stay safe and have fun!

See you on Monday,

Mrs Jones.

Class 2 Weekly News

This week we have started our topic People who help us!

Please see our topic plan:

Summer 2 – People Who Help Us class 2 reception and year 1

Our book this week has been Doctor by Ando Twin and Lucy M George

Doctor by Lucy M. George, AndoTwin | Waterstones

Literacy – reception

In literacy this week the children have been focussing on sequencing the steps of going to the doctors and they then used their fred talk to help sound out new words when writing sentences to match!

Literacy – Year 1

This week the children were looking at the features about how to write to inform. They looked at leaflets and were identifying the features needed to inform.

Reading

The children will have a new library book on Monday to share at home and some children also have a RWI reading book too. For reception please see the new booklet of words for the children to practise their sounding out and blending. Please work through these at your own pace throughout the whole term. You will notice underneath each sound is a dot or a dash. A dot is for a single letter sound (phoneme) and a dash is for a sound with 2 sounds together (diagraph). Please encourage your child to point to the dot or dash as they are using their fred talk to say the sounds and blend the word together to read it.

Year 1 homework

Please can you work through the summer worksheet sent home.

Ditty Sheets

This week’s ditty sheet is ditty 1.

This is to consolidate their learning and develop fluency.

This will be sent home on Monday to introduce the children to reading short words/ sentences. These are used to support our daily phonics teaching. Please encourage your child to recognise the letters and blend sounds together in short words (with the help of an adult if needed). These are also great to introduce them to ‘red words’ and allow them to start their reading journey. Please encourage your children to join in with these as much as possible to help with their blending skills in the coming weeks.

Your child will also receive a reading booklet in their homework file on Monday. Please work through this at your own pace throughout the rest of the half term.

Reading Records

Your child had their own personal reading record. Please use this to keep track of your child’s reading at home. This can include reading from the ditty sheet, reading words using set 1 sounds or when you share a story with your child (it can be a book from school or home). Please aim to read with your child at least 3 times a week and record this with the date and a comment in your child’s reading record. Please send this reading record in every day.

Maths

This week we have been making numbers to 10 using equipment. The children have also been practising to count beyond 20.

Year 1 Maths

This week we have been focussing on consolidating their knowledge and assessing where they are.

People Who Help Us Activities

This week the children were really lucky because we had the police come in to see us! (See separate post).

In RE we were looking at the Lost Sheep story. The children made their sheep, and discussed the meaning behind it.

Class 2 were so fantastic  at sports day they they thoroughly enjoyed themselves! We are so proud of how they tried their best, how they behaved and how they cheered each other on. Well done Class 2 🙂

Enjoy the weekend!

Spellings and Homework (Year One only)

Good afternoon,

Well done to all of the children for another super half term in Class 2.

Below is the spellings for this week and some Geography homework to finish our unit. We have been looking at the countries in the UK and I thought as a little task you could work with the children and use the internet to find out the capital cities within these countries.

Homework and Spellings (Year 1 only)

Good afternoon,

This weeks spellings are attached below.

Spellings week 4

Homework this week is a common exception words sheet- the aim is for the children to be able to read and write all of these words by the end of the year. This week I would like the children to honestly colour the words they know and then practise writing the words they don’t know in different ways- they could get a piece of paper and practise writing it with lots of different coloured pencils, or use chalk outside, make the words out of magnetic letters, etc, whatever you have access to at home!

Times Tables Rock Stars

Your child has been sent home with a username and password for Times Tables Rock Stars- this is a new way for children to practise their times tables at home online. We have been practising our times tables at school, so the children should be beginning to remember some of these. Remember, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s regularly will help here, and they can use this to find the answers if needed at the beginning.

Have a good weekend,

Miss Davies 🙂
