Weekly update!

Well done Class 4 on another fabulous week. It has been great to hear the children discussing their day each afternoon focusing on what they have learnt instead of what they have done.

Literacy: Class 4 have written some amazing adventure stories this week. We have focused on writing a beginning, build up, problem and a resolution. As always the children have been using lots of wow words and amazing adjectives!

Maths: Year one have been using their times table knowledge to count in 2’s and 5’s. Then we moved onto a new area focusing on length and height. We have been measuring objects using cubes.

Year two: We have been drawing and interpreting tally charts and pictograms this week. The children spotted that we count our house points using a tally chart!

Science: We have been exploring the habitats in our school grounds and seeing how many minibeasts we can identify. We will compare these findings to the same activity we completed in November to identify the differences between autumn and winter.

Homework: Please access and support your child to complete their homework. There is spellings, maths linked to their learning this week and a creative writing task.

Have a lovely weekend!

Weekly update

It was lovely to see all of the different numbers, shapes and patterns that the children were wearing today for NSPCC numbers day. We have been doing lots of maths activities today. We used our 2 and 5 times tables to cross a honeycomb safely and reach the honey. The children took their pulse to work out their heart rate before and after exercise and recorded these on hearts. Finally we had clue cards to describe shapes to our partner to see if they could guess from the properties.

This week in literacy we have been looking at lots of different ways that we can make our writing really exciting. We are looking forward to putting these all into place next week when we are writing our own adventure stories.

Maths: Year one have been exploring number to 50 further through comparing, ordering and sorting number representations.

Year 2: We have been looking at the 2 and 5 times tables in greater depth and exploring how multiplication sentences can link to the division sentences.

This week during our outdoor learning session we looked at minibeasts through magnifying glasses. We were so excited by the variety of different animals that we found!

Homework: Class 4 have come home with spellings, maths and writing homework. These link to the work that we are currently completing in class so please do complete them and return it on Thursday so I can check for an misconceptions before handing out the next set of homework on a Friday. Thank you to all of those children who are handing homework in before Thursday, I have been moving lots of children up to the rainbow!

Reading books: Please can books be returned on a Friday so they can be changed ready to be handed out on a Monday. Thank you.

Please could long hair be tied back on a Wednesday for the PE session.

Have a lovely weekend.

Class 4 update.

This week the children have enjoyed listening to the short stories from ‘The O’clock tales collection’ by Enid Blyton. We can’t wait to finish a story the next day if we go home on a cliff hanger!

In maths this week year one have started to explore numbers up to 50. They have looked at a variety of different representations and part whole models.

Year 2 have continued to work on multiplication looking at the 5x table and solving problems in a variety of contexts.

Literacy: We have been reading an exciting adventure story called ‘Vlad and the Florence Nightingale Adventure’ by Kate Cunningham. We have explored the emotions that the characters would be feeling at different part of the story as well as identifying the hero, enemy and quest of the story.

Topic: We explored the life of Edith Cavell and the work that she did to help soldiers. The class enjoyed acting out scenarios from the hospital as well as writing a diary from the point of view of Edith.

Homework: The children have spellings and maths linked to the work that they have been doing this week. The writing task focuses on the hospitals that Florence, Mary, Edith and Agnes might have worked in.

Reading books: Thank you for reading with your child at home. Please ensure that you fill out your child’s reading diary as if they read 3 times in a week they receive a star on the reading rocket. As children have been reassessed and moved into new groups please insure books from before Christmas are returned so they are reading at the correct level.

Times tables practice: Children have been given their username and passwords for ‘Times Tables Rock Stars’. We have looked at it in class today as part of our Friday times tables lessons. Please encourage your child to practice for 10 minutes at a time spaced out throughout the week. Initially children should focus on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

White Rose Maths app: https://whiterosemaths.com/resources/1-minute-maths White Rose maths have released an app with 1 minute maths sessions. This is a great resource that will really benefit your child’s recall of previously taught maths areas as well as the current topics.

First week

It has been lovely welcoming back Class 4 and hearing all about their time off.

Our knowledge day on Wednesday introduced our new topic ‘Nurturing Nurses’. The children are very excited about what they will be learning and have lots of great questions that they would like to find out the answers for.

Forest school on Thursday was great fun! This term is linked to out science topic ‘living things and their habitats’. We thought about where worms would like to live, what conditions they would need then challenged ourselves to see how many we could find. We are fortunate to have a number of spare pairs of wellies in school however if your child could bring a wellies and hat/gloves in a bag on a Thursday this would be appreciated.

Please could sharing books and RWI books be returned on Monday as all children have now been reassessed new books will go home on Monday (provided the current ones are returned).

The children have been given maths and spelling homework this week that links to the work we have been completing in class. Please could homework (and folders) be returned on Thursday.

Have a lovely weekend.

Weekly update

Wow, it is the end of the term already! It has been a big week in Class 4 with festive activities, the school play and class parties!

A big well done to everyone for putting on a fabulous performance of Born in a Barn. Thank you to all of the adults at home who helped with learning lines, finding costumes and listening to the very catchy songs on repeat!

Our literacy work this week was festive themed and the children enjoyed reading the story ‘Cookie the Christmas Elf’. They then worked in groups to reorder the story, orally retell the story and write it in chronological order.

Maths: Year 1 have reached the end of their topic of place value within 20 so this week we consolidated the learning by looking at specific areas of need. Year 1 did very well and are ready for a new area in January.

Year 2: Within the topic of money we have been looking at subtraction. This was then put into practice with the children giving change from different amounts of money.

RE: The children revisited the Christmas story and thought about what Mary and Joseph would be thankful for. The children then wrote their own ‘Thank You Prayers’ onto pieces of paper which we made into paper chains.

Homework and reading: The children have been given a festive homework pack that they can look at throughout the holidays. Children were given a choice of sharing books from our book corner to read with an adult over the break. Children will be reassessed during the first week back to determine what reading level they will be on next half term.

I hope you have enjoyed seeing the Christmas cards and crafts that have been coming home this week. Have a happy, safe and festive break!

Our week in Class 4.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Class 4 with the wonderful snowflake decorations that the children made hanging from the ceiling. This week has all felt very festive with our lovely Christmas lunch on Wednesday and our play rehearsals.

Early next week there will be a dress rehearsal before recording takes place on Wednesday. Please can you ensure that costumes are in school on Monday in a named bag. Please also check arbor to see if you have consented to your child being recorded and amend before Monday if you would like your child to perform. As all children have lines and actions it would be much appreciated if you could practice little and often with your child over the weekend to ensure they know when to say their line and what their lines are.

Maths: This week within place value to 20 Year 1 have been looking at comparing groups of objects and ordering amounts of objects and numbers from least to greatest.

Year 2: This week within the topic of money the children have been looking at recognising coins and their values to make different amount. We have then moved onto comparing amounts of money which has shown how many different ways the same amount of money can be made with different combinations of notes and coins.

English: This week we have been focusing on poetry. On Monday we read ‘In My Garden’ By Moira Andrews which is a lovely nature poem. The children thought about all of their senses and wrote their own nature poem based on what they could see, hear, smell and touch. I was very impressed with the adjectives that the children used in their poems.

Maths homework and spellings have been sent home today to be returned next Thursday.

I hope you have a enjoyable and festive weekend.

Miss Wright

What have we been up to this week?

We had a very quiet start to the week so it has been lovely to welcome back more children each day when they are feeling better.

Maths: This week Year 2 have moved onto the new topic of money. I was very impressed by how much the children already knew. The children have enjoyed making a shop on the carpet to practice paying for items and giving change.

Year 1 have also moved onto a new topic looking at place value within 20. We have explored many different ways to represent numbers using tens and ones. A particular focus of this unit is writing the words for the numbers 11-20. If you have a little extra time at home this would be a good focus.

Writing: This weeks literacy links to our current science topic of plants. The children started the week by ordering instructions that had been muddled, then creating their own instructions for the class’ morning routine. At the end of the week the children planned and wrote a set of instructions for how to plant a bean. These were very detailed and included lots of imperative (bossy) verbs. Well done Class 4!

Whilst we have had History, RE, Science and PSHE lessons in the afternoon this week the children’s favourite was definitely the pantomime on Thursday. We had a great time and lots of laughs!

For play rehearsals next week we would like the children to be saying their lines without reading from the script. I would appreciate if you could spend a some time practicing your child’s lines with them over the weekend. It is useful to say the line before so the children remember their cue!

Homework: The children have been given maths and spellings today as normal. Please can these be completed and returned on Thursday.

Reading: It is lovely to see so many children reading their books to adults at home. Please record every time you read together as for every three reads the children receive a tick on the reading rocket. After 10 ticks the children receive a bronze certificate, 20 is sliver and 30 is gold. Some children are very close to bronze and it would be lovely to award some certificates before Christmas.

The weather has dropped very cold this week and I have had to supply children with coats from lost property. Please can children come to school in a warm winter coat everyday.

I hope you have a lovely weekend.
