Science in LKS2

In LKS2 in science we identified and classified mains and battery powered devices. We learnt how electricity gets to our homes and school. We then became fire health and safety officers and gave advice to our school community on how to stay safe.

80th Anniversary D-Day

We had the honour of commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day with personnel from RAF Shawbury. It was a humbling experience to hear serving personnel speak about the significance of D-Day, the importance of remembrance, and to witness our students march in solidarity as a class.  The children were fascinated with the RAF Museum’s artefacts and  enjoyed interaction with them.  A big thank you to the RAF from St Mary’s for making this day very special.

Music Lessons Year 3

Year 3’s Musical Adventure with the Recorder!

Our Year 3 class has been diving into the wonderful world of music by learning to play the recorder! Over the past few weeks, the students have been enthusiastically discovering how to read music and play the notes on this delightful instrument.

The journey began with understanding musical notes and how to read them on sheet music. The children practiced finger placements and learned to produce clear, beautiful sounds on the recorder. Each lesson brought new notes and rhythms to master, and the classroom was filled with the joyful sounds of progress.

As their skills improved, the students began practicing combinations of notes. They worked hard to perfect their timing and coordination, and it was wonderful to see their confidence grow with each session. Playing the recorder became not only a learning experience but also a fun and rewarding challenge.

Now, we are thrilled to be preparing for a very special performance. At the end of our seven weeks of learning, the Year 3 class will showcase their newfound talents in a performance for the entire school. The students are practicing diligently and are very excited to share what they have learned with everyone.

Our Year 3 recorder players have made fantastic progress, and their dedication is truly inspiring. We can’t wait to see them shine on stage and celebrate their hard work and musical achievements!

Egyptian Workshop – Year 3/4

On Wednesday we had an Egyptian Experience Day. This was to give children context and an overview of the history we will cover this term. We began our visit with an interactive timeline activity and a short introduction to the chronology and geography of Egypt. Using the latest VR technology, the children explored the world of Ancient Egypt: visiting the inside of Rameses VI tomb in the Valley of the Kings; the Great Pyramids of Giza; the temple of Karnak and Rameses the Great’s temple at Abu Simbel as well as Hatshepsut’s mortuary temple and much much more.

We then looked at the Egyptians use of hieroglyphics to communicate in writing. We looked at the development of hieroglyphics and the consequences of this. Using Cartouches, we studied the Rosetta Stone replica artefacts, seeing how the ancient Greek at the bottom of the stone helped Pierre François Xavier Bouchard crack the code and work out what each symbol meant. After we studied the hieroglyphs, we used reed pens and traditional ink to write our own name. We saw Egyptian Art and the Canon of Proportion and saw a replica of the Egyptian plaques the Narmer Palette, which was one of the first historical records.

In the afternoon we took part in a mummification ritual and investigated the embalmers toolkit. We learnt how to embalm a body and what each step was- trying it out on our very own mummies! We found out that the bodies were so well preserved that they lasted for thousands of years. While doing this we also recapped on their science, by learning about parts of the body and remembering what their functions were. After we had removed the organs, we put them in canopic jars…ready for the afterlife!

Finally, we played Egyptian games, such as Seega, which is an abstract strategy game that originated in Egypt. Everyone worked really hard to follow the rules and some became quite competitive- wanting to beat their opponent and be the master.

It was a great day, full of lots of interesting information!

LKS2 Weekly News

This week the children in Years 3 & 4 haven’t stopped. We have started our assessment week off with a bang and all children have worked incredibly hard to show what they can remember from all their learning. They have tried their hardest and persevered. Well done!

We created our river creatures in DT (thank you for providing the box) and we will be adding our pneumatic system in this week. We can’t wait to show you the final product.

We also started to learn our Easter play – The Three Trees. We hope you can come and watch our performance on Thursday 14th March. Could all children please bring into school black bottoms (trousers, leggings, joggers) and a black t-shirt. If these could be brought into school before Tuesday 12th March that would be much appreciated.

We are looking forward to welcoming you into our classrooms on Tuesday to share our learning with you.

Have a wonderful weekend.

This week in LKS2 we have looked at states of matter in Science and looked at the Disney film Elemental – we discussed changing states. The children then created comic strips showing how water changes state. We also created a game of Fire, Water, Air and Earth.

In English we have been looking at letters of complaint and have been looking at the dangers of pollution within rivers. Next week we will be holding a debate and writing our own letter.

We have started our new unit in DT on pneumatic systems – we cannot wait to get making things.

Have a wonderful weekend 🙂

LKS2 Weekly News

Last week we had another super busy week in LKS2. We had fun testing our measuring skills when measuring the temperature accurately. We looked at time lines in History and the reasons as to why the Anglo Saxons invaded Britain.

Congratulations to Year 4 for winning the battle of the bands on TTRS.
