Arthog Day Three

Day Three at Arthog

What an exhilarating day at Arthog! We have been having tremendous fun in the water. Miss Bingham’s and Mr Matthew’s groups were very lucky, and got to use the (nearly) brand new giant paddleboards that managed to fit the instructor, teacher and ten children on at once. Several members of staff called this the most exciting activity they have known at Arthog- teamwork, skill development and brilliant games at the end. Mr Lloyd’s group visited the gorge and, in a twist, went ‘down’ it rather than the usual ‘up’ which was exciting. We begun with a slide, trod along the stones, lay down in the water and built our collaboration skills as we supported each other. As we ended at the beach, there was a swim to finish off. Some were even brave enough to try out ‘the washing machine’ which involved holding onto a rock face as the waves swept in. The groups swapped over for the afternoon, and tonight we are heading out for Night Walk.

Day Two at Arthog

Arthog Day Two

Today, we had two fabulous activities. We spent the morning learning about the importance of looking after our environment. This involved visiting the beach at Barmouth, collecting pieces of plastic and removing them from a place where they could harm the water and its animals. There was a surprising amount collected in a short amount of time. We were proud of making this little difference.

The afternoon was magnificent. We saw wonderful views at a nearby estuary, combined two three-person canoes to make six-person rafts, practised our paddling, and headed out as a team. We had the flow of the water with us, but paddling was still a challenge. We were even allowed to stand! Teams became competitive over which boat the instructor’s dog, Woody, stayed in as he hopped from canoe to canoe! We finished with a big treat as we were allowed a swim- what a memorable day!

Arthog Day One

Day One at Arthog

What an exciting start! The children from Class 9 and 10 have begun their Arthog adventure. After a smooth bus journey, we have taken part in team games. This involved challenges such as making a bridge sliding metal rods in wooden poles and helping each other cross as we go. We then tried steadying one another to re-arrange ourselves into height order on a narrow plank without falling off. Last of all, some real resilience was shown while helping one another climb up onto a high platform. At least three children who insisted they could not manage it overcame their fears and succeeded. Before dinner, we went to the beach to explore, and enjoyed the beautiful views in the sunny weather. Our evening activity was orienteering, which was very challenging and great fun. After a chapter of Percy Jackson, we went to bed ready for tomorrow’s canoeing and conservation activities.

Computing: National Coding Week in Class 8, 9, 10

National Coding Week

For National Coding Week, Class 8, 9 and 10 focused on the theme AI. They discussed the uses of AI and how they use it themselves at home. Also, they discussed that coding is used to power the digital world. Codes tell a computers, apps, smartphones, tablets and video games what it needs to do by typing in step-by-step commands for the computer to follow. For their first task they used a binary code to create words for their partner to solve. Then they used codes to create instructions on a grid which their partner needed to follow to create a pattern on their grid.

Fundraising Group

A big thank you to our Parent Fundraising Group who have allocated £1,000 towards school trips. Each class will have £100 towards an in-school workshop or an educational trip out.

This will allow trips to be subsides for all children.

The fundraising group had their first meeting of the new academic year and have plans for a spooky disco in October and a Christmas fair in December.

The group are always looking for new parents to join and welcome anyone who can volunteer to help run the events.  If you are interested, please let the office know.

Refugee Week Class 9 and 10

This week for Refugee Week Class 9 and Class 10 learnt about why Refugee week is so important and how to make people aware of it. We started by recapping prior knowledge of refugees and discussed the cruel journeys they may face. Both classes designed their own acts of kindness animation and wrote a poem or piece of writing about Refugees to go alongside it. Below are some examples from both classes.

Class 9 Newsletter – 14.06.2024

It has been a really busy and exciting week in Class 9 for our Year 5s!

The majority of the class visited Thomas Adams for their Year 5 taster day – which sounded terrific and in Maths we have been working on statistics and interpreting data. In Geography, we have begun our work on South America and in Religious Education we have continued our work on Judaism; discussing the Shema. The children have started to make the links and comparisons between the different faiths that we have studied this year: Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Buddhism.

Have a lovely weekend.

80th Anniversary D-Day

We had the honour of commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day with personnel from RAF Shawbury. It was a humbling experience to hear serving personnel speak about the significance of D-Day, the importance of remembrance, and to witness our students march in solidarity as a class.  The children were fascinated with the RAF Museum’s artefacts and  enjoyed interaction with them.  A big thank you to the RAF from St Mary’s for making this day very special.

This week, we completed our Hot Task in Science on Evolution.

The children created Flanimal Fact Files and used their understanding of evolution and inheritance to inform these.
