Class 1 Weekly News

Class 1 have had another great week!

This week our story focus has been The Three Little Pigs. We have been describing and labelling the pigs from the story using Fred talk and phonics knowledge, writing words such as hat, top, cap, pig and pink.

In phonics we have learnt new sounds – ay, ee, igh, ow

In maths we have been subitising and explaining the arrangement of dots. For example, I know that is 4 because I can see 2 and 2 which makes 4. We have also been playing board games to practise subitising dice patterns and careful counting.

In forest school we pretended to be fairies and elves and made wands using natural materials found in forest school.

Reminders

  • PE – Monday & Friday
  • Forest School – Tuesday
  • Please return books on a Monday to be changed

Class 1 Weekly News

Class 1 have had an amazing first week back after the Christmas break. They have made my first week back at St Mary’s after maternity leave extremely enjoyable.

In phonics we have been consolidating set 1 sounds ready to start learning new set 2 sounds next week – very exciting!

This half term our topic in ‘Once upon a time’. This week our story focus is The Three Little Pigs. The children have enjoyed listening to the story and retelling it in their own words using key language from the text.

In maths we have been practising our subitising skills. The children have been explaining how they know the dot arrangement is a certain amount using language such as ‘I can see 2 dots and 2 dots so I know that is 4’ or ‘that’s 5 because I can see 4 and 1 in the middle like on a dice’.

The children have also enjoyed music where they were putting actions to songs and also learning about different materials having different uses.

It has been a very busy week but the children have really shown this half term’s school value of positivity. What a positive start to the spring term!

Reminders:

  • PE days are Monday and Friday
  • Reading records and books need to be in every day
  • Next week forest school will be on Tuesday afternoon – please bring in wellies/hats/gloves/waterproofs. We do have a selection of school waterproofs if you would prefer.

Fundraising Group

A big thank you to our Parent Fundraising Group who have allocated £1,000 towards school trips. Each class will have £100 towards an in-school workshop or an educational trip out.

This will allow trips to be subsides for all children.

The fundraising group had their first meeting of the new academic year and have plans for a spooky disco in October and a Christmas fair in December.

The group are always looking for new parents to join and welcome anyone who can volunteer to help run the events.  If you are interested, please let the office know.

80th Anniversary D-Day

We had the honour of commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day with personnel from RAF Shawbury. It was a humbling experience to hear serving personnel speak about the significance of D-Day, the importance of remembrance, and to witness our students march in solidarity as a class.  The children were fascinated with the RAF Museum’s artefacts and  enjoyed interaction with them.  A big thank you to the RAF from St Mary’s for making this day very special.

Class 1 Weekly Update

Dear Parents/Carers

First and foremost, a heartfelt thank you to all the parents who attended our recent Parents Evening where we delved into all things RWI (Read Write Inc.). Your presence and engagement truly make a difference in your child’s learning journey. For those who couldn’t make it, fret not! If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’m readily available Tuesday through Friday, from 8:35 to 8:45 in the morning, stationed at the classroom door.

This week in our reception class has been nothing short of wonderful! We’ve embarked on a creative journey through the signs of spring, channelling our poetic spirits. The children have been crafting beautiful poems inspired by the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feelings evoked by the season’s awakening. It’s been great to witness their exploration of the five senses and how they interact with nature.

In the realm of mathematics, our focus has been on double numbers. The return of the much-loved doubles rap sparked enthusiasm among the children as they showcased their mastery of doubling up to double five! Their energy and eagerness to learn never fail to impress me, and seeing them embrace mathematical concepts with such enthusiasm is incredibly exciting.

Venturing into our forest school has been an absolute delight as we embarked on a fascinating exploration of animal habitats. From ladybirds to spiders, worms, birds, and even a beetle, the children exhibited keen observational skills as they identified various creatures in their natural environment. It’s been a joy to witness their curiosity and appreciation for the world around them flourish during our outdoor adventures.

As always, I’m immensely proud of each and every one of our reception class students. Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in nurturing their growth and development.

Reminders:

  • PE Days: Tuesday and Thursday
  • Forest School: Wednesday
  • Break time snack are to be healthy. Any unhealthy snacks will have to be saved for after school as per the school’s policy.

Many thanks,

Miss Newman

Class 1 Weekly Update

Dear Parents/ Carers

We hope this update finds you well. This week in literacy, Class 1 embarked on a magical journey into the world of gardening by planting beans. We were inspired by the delightful book “Jasper’s Beanstalk.” Encourage your child to share their experience and ask us about the 7 days of the week, a concept we’ve been exploring in class.

In Maths, we’ve been laying the foundation for numerical understanding by focusing on numbers up to 7. The children have been actively engaging in activities that build their numerical skills and confidence. Feel free to reinforce this learning at home through playful counting exercises.

For PE, our energetic little ones have been grooving and moving in our dance sessions. It’s a fantastic way for them to express themselves while staying active and healthy. Join the excitement by asking your child about the dance moves they’ve learned!

Unfortunately, we did not get to go to forest school this Wednesday as school conditions did not permit. We are hoping to make it down next Wednesday, however, this is dependent on whole school timetabling.

Lastly, we are thrilled to share that Class 1 has been awarded the Lunchtime Star Award for consistently demonstrating excellent sitting and impeccable table manners during lunchtime. We’re incredibly proud of their positive behaviour and manners. Let’s keep up the good work!

As always, if you have any questions or would like more details on your child’s progress, don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your continued support in making learning a joyful adventure for Class 1!

Reminders:

  • If you have any school books that can be brought back in it would be much appreciated. Your child can not receive a phonics book until the prior book is returned.
  • Please ensure your child’s reading record is in their bag every day.
  • PE days are Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Forest School is Wednesday – please arrive at school in your school uniform.

Best regards,

Miss Newman

Class 1 Weekly Update

Good Evening Class 1 Parents/Carers,

We have had a fantastic week in Class 1 full of some wonderful writing, magnificent maths and positive play!

Phonics

We are seeing such great progress with the children in phonics. Keep up the good work at home as it is really showing in the classroom. Ditty sheets are continuing into next week.

Literacy

It has been our second and final week of SUPERTATO where we are finally catching Evil Pea! That could not be done without the incredible writing of our ‘Wanted’ poster which we worked so very hard on. The children are starting to master their segmenting and blending of their CVC words with their knowledge of set 1 sounds.

Maths

We have been investigating the number 5 this week and finding out it can be made in more that one way! Challenge us on how we can make the number 5 this week!

PE

This week we explored DANCE in PE! It was such a good feeling to get our bodies moving! This helped us when it came to our healthy eating lesson this afternoon as part of our ‘Food Glorious Food’ unit.

Reminders

  • Forest School – First lesson is Wednesday 24th January 2024
  • PE days – Tuesday and Thursday
  • On Friday, parents can come into class when the door opens in the morning and share a story with their child.

Class 1 Weekly Update

Good Evening Class 1 Parents/Carers,

Phonics

Our children are persisting with their phonics. Some children have come home with Ditty sheets to be read each evening, this is to last for 10 school days. Alternatively, if your child is not in ditty group, please continue to read at home as usual and let Miss Newman know if your reading record has been misplaced.

Literacy

This week we have been exploring the incredible powers of SUPERTATO! The children have enjoyed getting to know the characters and even performed a puppet show of the story. This was followed by some beautiful writing of words we use to describe the Supertato gang!

Maths

We have been working very had this week at our number formation for numbers 1-6. We are starting to recognise numbers on a dice which should definitely help when playing dice games at home.

PE

We had a wonderful time in PE this week with our coaches, we got to use the parachute and even the hula hoops to practice our two-feet jumping.

Music

This week we explored African Kwanzaa music that celebrates harvest across the regions. The children enjoyed getting to explore their musical abilities with the different instruments such as tambourine, drum and maracas.
