Summer 2 – People Who Help Us class 2 reception and year 1

Our book this week has been Harry and the Dinosaurs say Raahh!!

Literacy – reception

In literacy this week the children have been focussing on sequencing and the story Harry and the Dinosaurs say Raahh! They have been using their fred talk to help sound out new words when writing sentences to match!

Literacy – Year 1

This week the children were looking at the features about how to write to inform. They looked at newspapers and were identifying the features needed to inform. This will help support them to write their own newspapers next week based on Harry and the Dinosaurs say Raahh!

Reading

The children will have a new library book on Monday to share at home and some children also have a RWI reading book too. For reception please see the new booklet of words for the children to practise their sounding out and blending. Please work through these at your own pace throughout the whole term. You will notice underneath each sound is a dot or a dash. A dot is for a single letter sound (phoneme) and a dash is for a sound with 2 sounds together (diagraph). Please encourage your child to point to the dot or dash as they are using their fred talk to say the sounds and blend the word together to read it.

Ditty Sheets

This week’s ditty sheet is ditty 2.

This is to consolidate their learning and develop fluency. 

This will be sent home on Monday to introduce the children to reading short words/ sentences. These are used to support our daily phonics teaching. Please encourage your child to recognise the letters and blend sounds together in short words (with the help of an adult if needed). These are also great to introduce them to ‘red words’ and allow them to start their reading journey. Please encourage your children to join in with these as much as possible to help with their blending skills in the coming weeks.

Your child will also receive a reading booklet in their homework file on Monday. Please work through this at your own pace throughout the rest of the half term.

Your child had their own personal reading record. Please use this to keep track of your child’s reading at home. This can include reading from the ditty sheet, reading words using set 1 sounds or when you share a story with your child (it can be a book from school or home). Please aim to read with your child at least 3 times a week and record this with the date and a comment in your child’s reading record. Please send this reading record in every day. 

Maths

This week we have been looking at how to partition (split) 5 in different ways!

Year 1 Maths

This week we have been focussing on:

  • Counting to 100
  • Counting forwards and backwards within 100
  • Partitioning numbers
  • Comparing numbers (1)

People Who Help Us Activities

This week the children were really lucky because we had the police come in to see us! (See separate post).

We have been lucky enough to have Nurse Jenni in to see the children to talk about how nurses help people.

We also had Josh the pilot for the RAF come into see the children….and they got to try on some uniform!

They have had such a fantastic week!

In literacy this week the children have been focussing on sequencing the steps of going to the doctors and they then used their fred talk to help sound out new words when writing sentences to match!

This week we have been making numbers to 10 using equipment. The children have also been practising to count beyond 20.

This week we have been focussing on consolidating their knowledge and assessing where they are.

People Who Help Us Activities

This week the children were really lucky because we had the police come in to see us! (See separate post).

In RE we were looking at the Lost Sheep story. The children made their sheep, and discussed the meaning behind it.

 

Class 2 were so fantastic  at sports day they they thoroughly enjoyed themselves! We are so proud of how they tried their best, how they behaved and how they cheered each other on. Well done Class 2 🙂

In literacy this week the children have been focussing on labelling a doctor’s uniform and then writing down a list of responsibilities!

This week the children were looking at the features about how to write to inform. They wrote letters to the Police officer that came in on Thursday! They included some really thoughtful questions.

Reception

This week the children have been looking at people who help us! They discussed lots of people who help in society and then who helps them!

Year 1 

This week we have begun our new art project looking at the collage artist Lyn Evans. The children will be completing a collage piece in the up and coming weeks!

Class 2 Weekly News

This week the whole school have been learning about the different decades through the Queen’s reign. Class 2 focussed on the 1950’s.

Literacy

This week the children have enjoyed writing coronation invites and they wrote their own sentences to describe the Queen’s coronation crown.

The children really enjoyed learning more about the Queen’s coronation that took place in 1953. Rev Rich came in to help us role play the service so the children could imagine what it was like.

Maths

This week we have been practising our counting to 10 and beyond. The children have also been ordering numbers and amounts and filling in missing numbers on a number track.

Year 1 Maths

This week we have been looking at the number 50 and collecting data of the sugar content of cakes, putting this into a table and then creating a bar chart to show all of this!

Art work

As part of our work on the 1950’s decade class 2 created their own masterpieces inspired by Jackson Pollock.

Dance

The children also practised and learnt some new 1950’s dance moves to the 1950’s song Jail House Rock!

Class 1, 2 & Nursery tea party

As part of our work on the 1950’s to celebrate the Queen’s 70 years on the throne class 1, 2 and nursery are going to have a coronation afternoon tea party on FRIDAY.

If you are able to, could you please bring in something small for the children to share with their friends e.g crisps, biscuits, small cakes etc.

The children will have lunch as normal and we will have our afternoon tea during the afternoon.

We have been up to lots of fun things this week. Our new topic this half term is ‘Into the woods’.

Summer 1 – Into the woods class 2 reception and year 1

Literacy

This week we have looked at the new story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen.

The children have been retelling the story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt using the actions and vocabulary from the story.

Caterpillars!

Class 2 have continued to study our caterpillars and we were delighted to see that they have settled in well in their nets.

Frogs!

This week we have been lucky enough to have a tadpole visit out classroom! The children loved to see what it was like up close.

Year 1 science 

We have been continuing to learn about animals. We have learnt about what different animals eat….The children decided they wouldn’t want to eat like a frog.
