Year 1 & 2 Brave the Elements to Build Minibeast Micro-Habitats 🌧️🌬️🐞

Year 1 and 2 have been busy scientists this week, learning all about micro-habitats in their science lessons. They explored what a micro-habitat is, why minibeasts need them, and how different environments provide food, shelter, and protection for small creatures.
To bring their learning to life, the children headed out to Forest School—and what an adventure it was! Despite the cold, wind, and rain, spirits were high as pupils wrapped up warm and embraced the weather like true explorers. They showed fantastic resilience, teamwork, and enthusiasm throughout the session.
Using natural materials such as sticks, leaves, bark, and pinecones, the children worked together to build their own minibeast hotel micro-habitats. They carefully thought about which materials would suit different minibeasts, discussing where insects might like to hide, stay dry, or keep warm. There was lots of thoughtful talk, problem-solving, and hands-on learning along the way.
Getting muddy, wet, and windswept only added to the experience, helping the children understand that nature doesn’t stop for bad weather—and neither do scientists! 🌿
It was a fantastic outdoor learning session that combined science, creativity, and perseverance. Year 1 and 2 should be very proud of their hard work and bravery, and we can’t wait to see what exciting discoveries their minibeast micro-habitats will bring next.
