This week the children have enjoyed listening to the short stories from ‘The O’clock tales collection’ by Enid Blyton. We can’t wait to finish a story the next day if we go home on a cliff hanger!

In maths this week year one have started to explore numbers up to 50. They have looked at a variety of different representations and part whole models.

Year 2 have continued to work on multiplication looking at the 5x table and solving problems in a variety of contexts.

Literacy: We have been reading an exciting adventure story called ‘Vlad and the Florence Nightingale Adventure’ by Kate Cunningham. We have explored the emotions that the characters would be feeling at different part of the story as well as identifying the hero, enemy and quest of the story.

Topic: We explored the life of Edith Cavell and the work that she did to help soldiers. The class enjoyed acting out scenarios from the hospital as well as writing a diary from the point of view of Edith.

Homework: The children have spellings and maths linked to the work that they have been doing this week. The writing task focuses on the hospitals that Florence, Mary, Edith and Agnes might have worked in.

Class 4 have been working really hard in all of their lessons this week, well done!

Maths: Year 1 have been looking at subtracting numbers crossing 10 and writing fact families from part whole models and bar models.

Year 2 have been exploring multiplication and how repeated addition and arrays can be used.

Literacy: This week we have been interviewing our friends to write a biography all about them. We have learnt lots more about everyone in our class as well as the features of a biography.

Science: This week we used ‘MRS GREN’ to help us to identify if things were alive and to justify our decisions.

PSHE: The children were already experts on this weeks focus of teeth brushing. They sorted foods into higher and lower sugar and described how they should brush their teeth effectively.

Homework: The children have spelling sheets, maths linked to an area they need more practice on and some sentences to add capital letters, full stops and adjectives to. Please encourage children to use a pencil when completing homework.

Reading books: Thank you for reading with your child at home. Please ensure that you fill out your child’s reading diary as if they read 3 times in a week they receive a star on the reading rocket. As children have been reassessed and moved into new groups please insure books from before Christmas are returned so they are reading at the correct level.

Times tables practice: Children have been given their username and passwords for ‘Times Tables Rock Stars’. We have looked at it in class today as part of our Friday times tables lessons. Please encourage your child to practice for 10 minutes at a time spaced out throughout the week. Initially children should focus on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

White Rose Maths app: https://whiterosemaths.com/resources/1-minute-maths White Rose maths have released an app with 1 minute maths sessions. This is a great resource that will really benefit your child’s recall of previously taught maths areas as well as the current topics.

Class 4 are quickly turning into Florence Nightingale and Agnes Hunt experts!

Through literacy this week we have been writing questions for Florence Nightingale and using different sources to answer these questions. Today we made a chronological timeline of the events in Florence’s life. I was very impressed with how much Class 4 have learnt this week.

Maths Year 1: We have been looking at number bonds to 10 and 20 and seeing the links between these. We have started to look at subtracting 1 digit numbers from 2 digit numbers.

Maths Year 2: We have started looking at multiplication through repeated addition of equal groups.

All children have been working on the two times table.

This week we have used computers to write our own names and have explored and the names and functions some of the keys.

We were very lucky that we had lovely sunny weather for our forest school session this week. The children classified objects into living, not living and once alive.

Homework: This week the children have been given spellings focusing on the trigraph ‘igh’. Instead of maths homework this week the children have a piece of descriptive writing to complete.

It has been lovely welcoming back Class 4 and hearing all about their time off.

Our knowledge day on Wednesday introduced our new topic ‘Nurturing Nurses’. The children are very excited about what they will be learning and have lots of great questions that they would like to find out the answers for.

Forest school on Thursday was great fun! This term is linked to out science topic ‘living things and their habitats’. We thought about where worms would like to live, what conditions they would need then challenged ourselves to see how many we could find. We are fortunate to have a number of spare pairs of wellies in school however if your child could bring a wellies and hat/gloves in a bag on a Thursday this would be appreciated.

Please could sharing books and RWI books be returned on Monday as all children have now been reassessed new books will go home on Monday (provided the current ones are returned).

The children have been given maths and spelling homework this week that links to the work we have been completing in class. Please could homework (and folders) be returned on Thursday.

Wow, it is the end of the term already! It has been a big week in Class 4 with festive activities, the school play and class parties!

A big well done to everyone for putting on a fabulous performance of Born in a Barn. Thank you to all of the adults at home who helped with learning lines, finding costumes and listening to the very catchy songs on repeat!

Our literacy work this week was festive themed and the children enjoyed reading the story ‘Cookie the Christmas Elf’. They then worked in groups to reorder the story, orally retell the story and write it in chronological order.

Maths: Year 1 have reached the end of their topic of place value within 20 so this week we consolidated the learning by looking at specific areas of need. Year 1 did very well and are ready for a new area in January.

Year 2: Within the topic of money we have been looking at subtraction. This was then put into practice with the children giving change from different amounts of money.

RE: The children revisited the Christmas story and thought about what Mary and Joseph would be thankful for. The children then wrote their own ‘Thank You Prayers’ onto pieces of paper which we made into paper chains.

Homework and reading: The children have been given a festive homework pack that they can look at throughout the holidays. Children were given a choice of sharing books from our book corner to read with an adult over the break. Children will be reassessed during the first week back to determine what reading level they will be on next half term.
