It feels so nice to be back! I have enjoyed being back in the classroom this week and getting back to normal! The children have been great this week in their both their behaviour and their learning.

In Maths we have been looking at pictograms, the key and how to gather data from them. This has been tricky as some pictogram have different keys e.g. 2 or 5. Therefore children need to be looking at the key when working out and gathering information from the pictograms. They have got homework on pictograms to consolidate their knowledge and understanding.

In Literacy children have been planning their own story based on ‘The Night Pirates’. Their ideas are great!  We have been looking at a range of features that we are going to include in our stories. One feature we have been focusing on is conjunctions. I have set children homework to write their own sentences using conjunctions. Please can children be using their full stops, capital letters and finger spaces.

In Science we have been looking at a woodland habitat and what plants and animals live in a woodland habitat. We also looked at songs which birds sing and the different tunes they sing.

This half term we are learning skills in DT. This week we have learnt out to make a slider. This was great to see the DT skills children already have and the fun they had making their own sliders this afternoon!

Spellings this week is in their homework folder. The spelling focus this week is looking at adding the suffix -ed on to words that end with an e.

This half term Class 5 will have PE on a Wednesday. Please ensure the correct PE kit is worn (plain grey, black or dark blue bottoms and a plain white top with a school jumper or cardigan).

On Tuesday Class 5 will be having an outdoor learning session. Please send your child into school with their wellies in a named carrier bag. If you would prefer your child to leave their wellies in school for the half term they can be left in their lockers.

Please can all outstanding books be back in on Monday for their new reading book to be issued, thank you.

The children have worked so hard these last four days and definitely deserve a rest!

Maths: This week in maths we have carried on with our division skills (dividing by 5) which the children have been great at. Please still encourage children to visit times table rock stars or practise their timetables as this really helps with their division skills. We have also been looking at odd and even numbers and the general rule for odd and even numbers. I have provided children with some half term homework to consolidate their knowledge.

Literacy: In literacy this week we have been looking at poetry. We have had focused lessons on rhyming words to describe a dirty hospital, based on our class book ‘Vlad and Florence Nightingale’. I have really enjoyed reading their poems and looking at the rhyming words they have used!

I have provided children with homework which can be completed over the half term. I have attached copies below.

Spelling: This week spellings are on a sheet in children’s blue homework folders. This week we have been looking at works that end with a consonant and y (e.g. cry) and adding the –ed on the end. For words that end in a consonant and a y we have to drop the y and add ied.

Children have not got a reading book from our reading scheme instead they have had an opportunity to take a book from our reading corner. Please can any outstanding books be back in school. Please encourage your child to be reading daily. It’s great to see their improvements.

Please can you all check your children’s coats as we have had a couple of coats go missing over the past week. Sometimes children do pick up the wrong coat by accident so please are you able to check your child has the correct coat wit

This week we have been doing some fantastic work! Class 5 have been worked very hard this half term and have earnt a well-deserved rest. One more week to go!

Maths: we are still focusing on division and sharing. The children have been great at this. We have also looked at using the opposite method, multiplication, to check our division answers and help us work it out. I have noticed a big improvement in children’s timetables knowledge. Please encourage children to use timetable rock stars to help practise their timetables.

Literacy: The children have produced some fantastic writing this week, I am so impressed! Children have written their own adventure stories based on our class book. We have looked at adventure story features, using paragraphs, using interesting sentences openers to get the reader’s attention and using wow words and adjectives. I have attached some pieces of writing from this week for you to look at.

Science: We have been looking at microhabitats in and around our school grounds. The children enjoyed making shelters for their animal on Tuesday. It was great to see children’s teamwork skills, communication skills and using their knowledge outside the classroom environment.

RE: We have looked at Eid and how it is celebrated and why. The children engaged in some great discussion talking about this topic.

PSHE: It has been children mental health week this week and have looked at what goals we would like to achieve and how to reach our goals. We also have a great time singing along to ‘reach for the stars’.

Computing: This week it has been ‘Safer Internet Day’. We have been looking at what is safe to post online and what is not. It was great seeing the children discussing what is safe and what is not and why and looking at the consequence if you do post something unsafe.

Homework:

Writing: Children to identify a story at home and pick of the beginning, build up, problem and ending.

Maths: Consolidation on multiplying and dividing calculations.

Spelling: Spellings this week are in the blue homework folders not the yellow books. This week spelling focus is adding –ed.

This week we have been busy and the children have all been great!

In English we have started our new genre of writing ‘Adventure Stories’. We have been reading ‘Vlad and Florence Nightingale to start this unit of work. The children made some great predictions from looking at the title, blurb and front cover and also used dictionaries to learn new meanings of words! This week’s homework I would like children to write the new words we learnt and see if they can put them into sentences. Please make sure children are using full stops, capital letters and presenting their work neatly.
The words we looked at were:

• Ambling
• Rodent
• Chuckled

In Maths we have been looking at the multiplication symbol and array. On Thursday, we took our maths learning outside by using chalk to draw different arrays for different multiplications. Homework this week is based on this week’s learning of arrays to consolidate their knowledge. Throughout the school day and week I am asking children times tables questions to enhance their knowledge. Last week children received a letter regarding Times Table Rockstar’s. Please encourage your child to practice for 10 minutes at a time spaced out throughout the week. Initially children should focus on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

History: This week we have looked at a different famous nurse ‘Edith Cavell’. Children recorded facts and then wrote diary entries as if they were Edith. I enjoyed reading these very much.

Spellings: We have looked at the use of apostrophes this week in our spelling sessions. The children have got a worksheet to complete as their spelling homework. They will not have any spellings in their yellow books.

Homework:
Children have now got a blue folder for their homework. Their homework this week is a Maths, writing and a spellings worksheet. Every week I will add their new homework to this folder. I will be monitoring homework weekly.

Can I please ask any books that children may have at home need to be back into school so they can be issued a new book. Also, please make sure you are recording if you are reading with your child at home in their reading record. I will be issuing certificates for those children who have reached our goal on our reading rocket chart.

Class 5 have been mathematicians, writers, interviewers, artists, dentists and explorers this week and have shown hard work throughout.

I am very impressed with the children’s maths knowledge improving. This week children have got maths homework linked to this week’s work in class (equal groups). Please access this with your child to consolidate their knowledge.

In writing, children have been interviewing their friends to find out information so that they can write a biography about them. They had lots of fun doing this and role playing their interviews to the rest of the class. This week’s writing homework, to help strengthen their handwriting and consolidate their knowledge of Mary Seacole, who we have been learning about in History, please access their homework writing facts about her. I am ensuring children take pride in their work and are trying their best when writing. Please encourage children to join their handwriting, write in a pencil, to use capital letters/full stops and to make sure it is neat.

In Science we have been looking at ‘MRS GREN’ and identifying characteristics of living things. In our outdoor lesson this week we identified a plant, an animal and an object that is not alive and identified ‘MRS GREN’ characteristics. This was a great opportunity for children to use their knowledge from last and week. Just a polite reminder for children to be in school uniform on a Tuesday and to bring wellies with them, thank you.

In art we created our own colour wheels using watercolours just like Paul Klee did when he experimented using paints and colours. The children were great at identifying the primary colours and how to make secondary colours.

In PSHE we have been looking at how to keep healthy. This week our focus was looking at how to keep our teeth healthy and clean. We looked at different foods that contain high amounts of sugar and understood how it can impact our teeth. We then used toothbrushes to clean teeth. We did this for 2 minutes and children cleaned the teeth well – I was impressed!

Welcome back 🙂

I hope you have all had a lovely break and rest over the Christmas holidays. Class 5 have been great settling back into school and have impressed me with their great behaviour – let’s keep it up!

On Wednesday we had a knowledge day. In History our focus is ‘Nurturing Nurses’. We researched significant people and the reason why they are significant. We then drew people who are significant to us and explained why. We looked at Florence Nightingale and how she was known as ‘The Lady with the lamp’. We looked at why lanterns were used and decorated our own lanterns.

Reading

This week we have been assessing children’s reading and they will be given their new book on Monday. Please can I ask all outstanding reading books to be handed back into school.

Homework

Maths – children have got maths homework just recap their knowledge on money and ways to make different amounts.

Spelling – Children have NOT got spellings in their yellow spelling book this week. Children have got a worksheet to correct the spelling in the sentences for this week.

I have attached the homework below as some children did not have their homework folders with them today.

Outdoor learning – On Tuesday afternoons we will be doing outdoor learning. Children need to come in school uniform and bring wellies / suitable outdoor footwear with them in a named bag. Waterproof clothing will be provided by school.

Hello

Just wanted to make things clearer and clarify what is going to be sent home on certain days.

Homework and Spellings

Children will receive this on Friday and needs to be returned to school on a Thursday. In their homework packs there will be maths homework, phonics spelling sheet and their spelling book. This spelling book will have 11 words in, 5 of the words will be words they have found difficult to spell during our spelling lessons in the week (specific to your child) and the other 6 words will be red words which all children will have (these will be the same for everyone). I will not be sending home the book they had on Friday (practice log book) as this caused lots of confusion. The spelling book will now be a normal, lined book that the children can keep all week and return as usual with their homework on a Thursday.

Reading

Reading books and diaries will be sent home on a Monday to be returned on a Friday. These books are aligned with the children’s guided reading books and have the sounds they are learning/reading in our guided reading sessions. When myself and Mrs Murphy read with a group for guided reading, we will record in the children’s reading record to outline the book they have read in class with their group.

Website

Website posts will be posted, as appropriate, for key information needed for our class. These are usually done on a Friday after school, however could differ from day to day, depending on any changes to routine. Please ensure you are signed up to our class emails as these are really handy to ensure you are kept up to date. However the website posts are available at all times if you cannot access your emails.
