Year 3/4 Prehistoric Workshop Adventure

Today Year 3 and Year 4 took part in an exciting prehistoric workshop where they travelled back in time to discover what life was like during the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age.

The children began by exploring a variety of ancient tools and activities. They used stone tools to grind grain into flour and learned how people in prehistoric times made food without modern equipment. They also discovered how butter was made by shaking cream until it thickened into butter.

Next, the children became prehistoric builders! They created miniature shelter walls using willow sticks and built small shelters using wooden sticks and animal fur, just as people may have done thousands of years ago. One of the highlights of the day was using bow drills to create smoke, helping them understand how early humans made fire.

The adventure continued with an amazing virtual reality experience. Wearing VR headsets, the children were transported into realistic Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age environments where they could explore settlements and see how people lived during different periods of prehistory.

In the afternoon, the children took part in a range of hands-on activities. They made bracelets from rope, learned how wool was produced by carding fibres with brushes and weaving on miniature looms, and enjoyed playing a Stone Age game using rocks as dice. They also worked together to complete prehistoric portable art puzzles, discovering how ancient people expressed themselves through artwork.

Throughout the day, the children showed fantastic curiosity, teamwork and enthusiasm. The workshop brought their history learning to life and helped them gain a deeper understanding of how people survived, created and innovated during the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age.

It was a memorable day filled with exploration, creativity and discovery, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed stepping into the shoes of our prehistoric ancestors!

Spellings, Reading Books and Reading Rewards

We would like to share a few important updates regarding spellings and reading in class 6 and 7.

Spellings

From now on, weekly spellings will be sent home in children’s log books. It is the responsibility of each child to practise their spellings regularly at home throughout the week. We encourage children to spend a few minutes each day learning and revising their spelling words to help build confidence and improve their spelling skills.

Reading Books

All children have now been assigned a book band and should have a book-banded reading book on their desk at school. These books should be brought home regularly so that children can continue their reading practice outside of school.

Reading at home is one of the most effective ways to support your child’s progress in literacy. Regular reading helps to develop fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and a love of books.

Reading Rewards

This year, we will be rewarding children with Dojos for reading at home:

  • Read 3 times in a week = 3 Dojos
  • Read 4 times in a week = 4 Dojos
  • Read 5 to 7 times in a week = 5 Dojos

To receive these rewards, reading must be recorded in your child’s reading journal.

We would greatly appreciate your support in encouraging your child to read regularly at home and to ensure that their reading journal is completed and brought into school. Together, we can help children develop strong reading habits and a lifelong enjoyment of reading.

Thank you for your continued support.

British Science Week – open lesson with parents

It was wonderful to have our parents join us for our science lesson during British Science Week.

We looked at the awe and wonder of magnetic forces and tested whether magnets are stronger when they are hot or cold.
we looked at the Shanghai Maglev train that uses magnetic levitation, eliminating friction to travel at high speeds.

British Science Week – open lessons with parents

It was wonderful to have our parents join us for our science lesson during British Science Week.

We looked at micro plastic pollution and which materials were best at filtering out microplastics and how we can adapt our behaviours to try and solve the problem.

Music lessons- let’s get down with the cornets

We have started learning to play the cornets in Year 3 and 4. We have had our first lesson on how to make a sound on the trumpet and then started to learn the song Hot Cross Buns. We can’t wait to see what we will be able to play by the end of the 10 weeks!

Christmas Fair

This week in Class 5,6 and 7 we have made things for the school Christmas Fair. We had great fun and raised a lot of money for the PTA. We had to design and package, create a budget and then sell our produce at the fair. We even added our allergy information for our customers.

The Big Debate

This week we have been debating whether the Sicily planning department should allow a housing site to be built 3km from Mount Etna. From our public forum on Thursday, the Sicily planning department will respond to letter with their final decision next week. Here are some clips of people sharing their thoughts at the debate.

Volcanoes

This week in Geography we have been looking at volcanos and earthquakes. We worked in groups to create a double paged spread on volcanos. We also learnt the MC Grammar song:
