🦷 Year 3 and 4 Explore the Science of Teeth!
Over the last few weeks, our curious Year 3 and 4 children have been diving into the fascinating world of teeth and dental health. As part of our science topic, we’ve been learning about the structure of teeth, their functions, and how different liquids can affect them over time.
To investigate this, we carried out a fun and eye-opening experiment using hard-boiled eggs. Why eggs? Because their shells are made of calcium carbonate, which is similar to the enamel on our teeth—making them a great substitute for this experiment!
We placed the eggs in five different liquids:
- Water
- Milk
- Vinegar
- Coca-Cola
- Orange Juice
Over several days, we observed how each liquid affected the eggshells. The results were surprising! Some liquids caused discoloration, others made the shells soft or even started to dissolve them. This helped us understand how sugary or acidic drinks can damage our teeth if we’re not careful.
The children were amazed (and disgusted) by the changes and had lots of great discussions about how to keep their teeth healthy. We also talked about the importance of brushing, flossing, and choosing drinks that are kinder to our teeth.
It’s been a brilliant hands-on learning experience, and we’re proud of how engaged and thoughtful our classes have been throughout the topic!
