Head’s Update

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you all had a fabulous half term break and enjoyed the Platinum Jubilee activities over the long bank holiday weekend.  It has been lovely to welcome back the children this week for our final half term before the summer break.  This week in school, each class has been looking at a specific decade of the Queen’s reign.  A big thank you to Reverend Rich for being the Archbishop of Canterbury for an afternoon for St Mary’s to have their very own coronation.

This week, children in KS1 have been fantastic taking part in their phonics screening check.  The results will be posted out with the end of year reports in July.

It is going to be a very busy half term with Father’s Day lunches, sports day, trips and residential, etc. Please see below for key dates.  Please note that term ends on Wednesday 20th July. Thursday 21st July has been given as an additional non-pupil day in lieu of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on 3rd June.

This week, I have spoken to the children about bringing in water in a plastic bottle to drink in the classrooms and only having a health snack to eat at break time.  Staff have noticed an increase in children eating chocolate bars and crisps.  The children came up with some great ideas for healthy snacks such as, fruit, carrot sticks, cucumber, breakfast bars and dried fruit.  Chocolate and crisps are fine to have in lunch boxes. Some children say they do not like water but I have explained that juice is made from water but with added sugar.  The suggestion discussed with the children was weakening the solution to reduce the sugar intake before swapping to water only.  The only children having juice in the classroom should be those who have a diagnosed medical condition that requires them to have sugar-intake regulation drinks.

Now the weather is warming up (finally!), can I remind you to send your child to school with a sun hat and named jumpers.  This week our lost property box was close to overflowing with unnamed jumpers.  We have started a new system at lunchtime where children are asked to put their jumpers in their class box and access their water bottles but this does not always happen so having named jumpers will help.  Please note that sun cream should be applied at home before children come to school.

I hope you have a lovely weekend.

Trip to the Royal Albert Hall in London

It was an absolute pleasure to take the school choir to London.  We left Shawbury at 7.00am arriving in London for 11.30am.  This gave families an opportunity to visit a museum or take in the sight of the city.  At 2pm, we went to the Royal Albert Hall and joined other schools and professional choirs and musicians to practise singing together before the night time performance.  In total, 2,500 children were singing together in front of an audience of 3,000 people.

It was lovely to sing alongside performers such as the VP Bhangra dancers and drummer who have performed at a number of high-profile events including the London Olympics 2012 closing ceremony and The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.

Head’s update

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a brilliant week to end a half term!  The children have experienced a huge range of trips and activities.

I would like to say a huge thank you to the RAF for the helicopter visit and the STEM Ambassadors who worked with the whole school community on Monday.  The children loved being able to see the helicopter land, speak to the pilots and get a close up of the cockpit.

It was a pleasure to take a group of children to London to sing at the Royal Albert Hall in the presence of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.  It was an awe-inspiring trip which the children, parents and staff thoroughly enjoyed.  The children sang beautifully and felt very special seated in a box in eye line of the royal couple.

It was fantastic to hear how the younger children have enjoyed their teddy bear’s picnic and a trip to St Mary’s Church.  Thank you to Reverend Rich Cresswell for talking to the children about the important features in the church.  Children in Year 3 and 4 have been able to showcase their work on France during a French café for parents.  It was lovely to sit in class and listen to the children retrieve knowledge on French landmarks linking it to their class book and geography.  Thank you to all the parents who supported the French café.

Finally, thank you to the PTA who organised the Platinum Jubilee fun and games with military precision.  It was fantastic to see the children all dressed up in red, white and blue enjoying the games and tucking into some well-deserved snacks.

The first week back we are continuing are Platinum Jubilee celebrations with every class/year group looking at a specific decade in the Queen’s reign.  Please check out your child’s class page for the decade they will be focussing on.

I hope you enjoy any Jubilee celebrations this half term at home or in the village. Have a fantastic half term break and I look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday 6th June 2022.

Best wishes,

Mrs North
