Arthog Day 4

Good evening everyone! We have had a fantastic day today. All groups have loved their final activities and tonight ended with games and film. Today, groups enjoyed rock climbing, canoeing, and a mountain walk. I have attached some pictures below to show you just how beautiful their surroundings were today. Rock climbing enabled them to face their fears of heights, tackle a new activity and develop new skills. During the mountain walk, the group enjoyed taking in the breath taking views and exploring their surroundings. Canoeing taught them a new skill, as this was the first time canoeing for many of them, and they enjoyed jumping/swimming in the lake after.

Tomorrow every group is going to the beach to hopefully have a campfire, marshmallows and explore the sand dunes before heading back to Shawbury. I just want to say I am unbelievably proud of every member of Class 10. They have represented the school extremely well and approached all activities with a positive outlook. This has enabled them to face fears, have new experiences, build friendships and have adventures together. Their team work and support towards each other has blown me away and I hope they treasure these memories made for a lifetime. They have been so lucky to have the most experienced instructors who have taught them all new skills, knowledge and supported them all week to build their confidence to tackle every activity.

During their time, everyone has taken part in the John Muir Award. They have completed a range of tasks to achieve this environmental award, which has encouraged them to discover and explore wild places – which is something they have definitely done this week. We are looking forward to coming home tomorrow and sharing our experiences with you all. Updates will be sent about our arrival time. See you all tomorrow.

Arthog Day 3

Good evening everyone! We have had a fantastic day today. Two groups took part in gorge walking, where they walked up a waterfall and got the opportunity to slide down rapid areas. After gorge walking, both groups went to the lake to build rafts where they had to work together to build a raft that would float. They had barrels, planks of wood and ropes to use. Both groups built a successful raft, which floated and they even got to race across the lake.

Tonight, all groups went out to take part in a night walk. It was a very windy and rainy walk but they all enjoyed coming back to a warm hot chocolate.

I have managed to upload some photos from our 1st day below.

Arthog Day 2

Hi everyone! What an action packed day we have all had. The kids have been amazing and have all immersed themselves into each activity. They have enjoyed gorge walking, mountain walking, canoeing and beach walking today. All the children have been so supportive and encouraging of each other. This evening, they took part in orienteering around the site, which ended with them all looking for a number which had been blown away in the wind-which they all found very funny. Then, they enjoyed a hot chocolate together as they filled out their John Muir award journal.

I am sorry for the lack of pictures, they don’t seem to be uploading, but I am saving them all to share when we are back.

Everyone is in bed now and looking forward to tomorrow.

Arthog Day 1

Hello everyone! We have arrived and we’re already having the best time!! We have settled in, enjoyed dinner and taken part in team building activities and a night walk. Everyone has made their bed successfully and have worked so well with each other to make sure everyone is feeling settled.

Team building allowed everyone to work together as a group and get to know their instructor. This evening they took part in a night line, where they were blindfolded and had to guide each other through obstacles in the dark. After the night line, they enjoyed a hot chocolate in their pyjamas.

Class 10 Weekly News

This week Class 10 have worked really hard. They started the walk by taking part in a walk around the village to take photos for their art work. During art this half term, Class 10 have been focusing on the artist Bakhtiar Umataliev, who paints Shropshire landscapes, especially Shrewsbury. Class 10 used an iPad to take photos of Shawbury landscapes and buildings that they would like to draw and paint for their final art pieces.

Class 10 have been reading the book Hidden Figures in Literacy. This week they planned their class narrative recount, based on Mary Jackson, who is one of the Hidden Figures. They started to write their recount, recapping the features of a recount that they needed to be including. Also, making sure they were including a range of fronted adverbials and relative clauses.

In Maths, Class 10 have been recapping long multiplication this week. They have been practising the written method by multiplying 4 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers. Near the end of the week, they also explored how they can use their knowledge of powers to 10 and factors to solve multiplication problems.

In History, Class 10 are going to conduct some research around Shawbury, linking to their history topic this half term. Today, they should have brought home two copies of questionnaire they created for someone who has lived in Shawbury or is currently living in Shawbury to fill in. Please could you take some time to fill in the questionnaire and bring back to school as soon as possible. We will be analysing the results week beginning 23rd October.

Arthog has finally arrived and I am really looking forward to it! Children might start to feel a bit nervous over the weekend, please reassure them as much as possible and I’ll be around on Monday morning to help any with any nerves or worries from children or parents. Please remember your child needs a packed lunch for the journey and any medication needs to be in an enclosed packet clearly labelled with your child’s name and instructions on when this needs to be given. While we are away, I will be updating the website as much as possible for you to see all the fun we are having.

Hope you all have a lovely, relaxing weekend.

Class 10 Weekly Post

This week Class 10 started a new genre of writing in Literacy. They began the week by reading Hidden Figures. This is a story set between the 1930s and 1960s, and describes the barriers for Black women in science at that time. The book contains biographical information about four influential mathematicians and engineers, all of whom contributed to the space race while working for NASA. They have been exploring the four women in the story and developing an understanding of active and passive voice.

In Maths, Class 10 have continued their four operations work. This week they have focused on factors, multiples and prime numbers. They have used their knowledge of all three to answer a range of mathematical questions and identified common factors, multiples and prime factors of given numbers. Next week, they will move on to finding square and cubed numbers and multiplying 4-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers.

In Science, Class 10 were lucky enough to be able to dissect hearts and lungs. They enjoyed feeling and seeing parts of the heart that have learnt about so far and seeing the lungs being pumped up.

In History, Class 10 have been learning about the local area. They have been focusing on the buildings that have been built in Shawbury, the reliability of historical sources that explore Shawbury and this week they used maps from 1918,1945 and 1977 to identify how the RAF base has changed over time.

Remember next week is the last week at school before  Arthog. Any questions, feel free to ask me on the playground at the end of the day.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Class 10 Weekly News

This week Class 10 have had an excellent week working hard across all lessons. In Literacy, they have produced beautiful non-chronological reports about the RAF, which include well structured paragraphs, pictures with captions and subheadings. They have put in so much effort to create to display all their knowledge and use pictures and diagrams to decorate. I am so proud of all their final pieces and can’t wait to read them.

In Maths, Class 10 have moved on to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They have began the unit by focusing on addition and subtraction, finding missing digits and using the formal column method to solve calculations. Next week, they will focus on common factors, multiples and prime numbers.

Finally, in History this week Class 10 looked at historical sources and how reliable they can be when you need to find out about the past. They looked at sources of History about Shawbury, identified the type of evidence it was and described the reliability of it by explaining its pros and cons.

Please remember to return to school flu vaccination letters and consent forms about a potential school dog.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Class 10 Weekly News

Class 10 have had yet another excellent week this week. They have been working hard in Literacy writing non-chronological reports about the RAF. They have been working hard to make sure their writing is presented in paragraphs and using a range of subordinating clauses correctly.

In Maths, Class 10 have been working on place value. They have shown an excellent understanding of the place value of numbers up to 10,000,000, ordering and comparing and rounded integers. Next week, they will move on to the four calculations; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

In Science, Class 10 have been learning about the circulatory system. They have focused on how the heart works and today they learnt about the pulmonary and systemic circulation systems. Hopefully, over the next two weeks they will have an opportunity to dissect a heart.

Homework was set on Seesaw this Monday and is due in today. If children are having trouble using Seesaw I am happy to help or they can collect a paper copy from me. Also, spellings have been sent home for your children to practise across the week. Please keep reading at home with your child, three times a week is the minimum, and please record and sign their reading records so they can gain ticks on our class reading rocket.

Arthog is just around the corner, please make sure the office received your child’s consent form, as this information needs to be passed onto Arthog as soon as possible. On Wednesday at 3:30pm myself and Mr Lloyd will be holding an Arthog meeting to pass on any further information, it would be beneficial for yourselves if you could attend this.

Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Class 10 Weekly News

Class 10 have had an excellent week this week. They have been working extremely hard already, making sure their work is presented at a high standard and acting as positive role models to all other year groups.

This week started with House Captain speeches during Mondays assembly. All children presented well written, persuasive speeches to the whole school. It was lovely to listen to how passionate they were about taking on the house captain roles. It was a close vote but I am pleased to congratulate our four new house captains; Daniel, Olwenna, Gracie and Bethan. Also, congratulations to our new vice captains; Emmie, Esme, Ava-Grace, Zach, Mya, Thomas, Archie and Lola and our four new sports captains; Sonny, Keelan, Jack and Charlie.

Our new topic this half term is based around the history of Shawbury. We are focusing on employment and industry and how these have developed over time including the RAF base. If you have any pictures, or information at home, please bring it into school as we would love to share this in class to support our learning. If you are able to offer your time to come and talk to the children, this would be amazing as well.

Today, the class received their leavers hoodies, children are not allowed to wear them until Arthog and after Arthog can wear them on PE days only. Arthog is approaching quickly, please don’t forget to check the kit lists, sent out in the Summer Term, so that your child is prepared with the appropriate clothing ready for the residential.

On Monday, your child will receive a login for Seesaw to complete homework each week and spellings for the week.

Well done Class 10 for an excellent week!

Have a lovely weekend.
