Class 10 Weekly News

Class 10 have had an excellent start to this half term. They have continued their work on evolution in science. Today, they learnt about Mary Anning and the role she played in fossil discoveries. They identified significant events in her life which would have impacted her discoveries. For example the role of women and how scientific publishers didn’t always credit her in their scientific articles about her work. Class 10 then had a discussion around “What differences might there have been if Mary was a male fossil hunter” this sparked brilliant conversations in class and the class are looking forward to learning more about Mary and fossils next week.

In Literacy, Class 10 have started a new fiction genre based around the story The Last Tree. This is a parable story which has an underlying message of how humans need to look after the environment. Class 10 wrote a class opening, using vocabulary from their own vocabulary banks and will continue to apply their knowledge of story writing next week.

In Geography, Class 10 have started a new unit of called Greta and Attenborough’s Army. This week they developed their understanding of climate zones, comparing similarities and differences, animals/plants that have adapted there and how their distance from the equator impacts their temperature. Next Thursday, Class 10 will be visiting Hawkstone Park Follies as part of this unit of work.

On Monday, your child will be coming home with three revision books which will be used as homework books to prepare your child for their SATs and the transition to secondary school. As a class we created a time table of which days homework would be set and which tasks will need to be completed. The books will be coming home on Monday with your child and a letter explaining the purpose of the books and a copy of the home work timetable. The class have decided to do one test in each book, which takes roughly 10 minutes and the homework days will be Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Weekly News Class 10

This week Class 10 have had an excellent week. They have been writing the final versions of their Rose Blanche stories. They have been working so hard to include a range of grammatical features. I am looking forward to reading these.

This week your child should have come home with a reading book mark. The book mark has all six reading domains and some sentence stems to use when you’re reading with your child. Please use this as much as possible and focus on the infer domain the most, as this is what we are focusing on during lessons. This is helpful tool to spark conversations about stories with your child and build their comprehension skills in preparation for the summer SATs.

In Art, Class 10 painted their poppy petals. They discussed the shades of red they wanted to create and recapped on their mixing of paints to create lighter and darker shades. They are looking forward to making their final clay poppies over the next two weeks.

Please remember to sign your child’s reading record and make sure they are bringing this into school everyday.

Have a lovely weekend.

Weekly News Class 10

This week Class 10 got an exciting visit from Shawbury RAF. In History and Literacy, Class 10 have been learning about WW2 and were lucky enough to have a visit from the RAF. They were taught about the history of Shawbury RAF and had they have developed as a base and changed over the past 100 years. In addition to this, they learnt about how Shawbury village was bombed on the 27th June 1940 during WW2, where luckily nobody was injured or killed. They also learnt about the Aries project, where a Lancaster Bomber was flown around the world in 42 days.

Also, the class got the opportunity to ask questions and during this discussion they learnt that the runway changed to having four runways so that planes were able to take off in four different directions. This meant they would always be able to take off into the wind. Another question was why they parked planes in different destinations around Shawbury and not just on the base, and this was so if they were attacked again their aircraft would be safe and the likelihood of them being destroyed was decreased.

Finally, they were able to explore some historical sources and artefacts. The whole class loved listening the air raid siren and having a go themselves.

Class 10 Weekly Post

Class 10 have had an excellent first full week back at school. They have been tested on their knowledge from topics last term and last year. They have all proved that they have retained lots of knowledge from last term and can recall facts from the Mayan and Migration topic from last year.

In History this week, Class 10 started their new topic; World War 2. They are very excited about this topic and have shown lots of enthusiasm towards it. They began the topic by creating a timeline of key events during WW2 and events that lead up to the beginning of the war. If you have anything at home that you feel would be a good learning resource for this topic, please feel free to bring it in. We would really love to see historical sources from this time period that the children’s family members may have at home.

In Literacy, Class 10 are studying a book called Rose Blanche. This story is about a young girl who is experiencing the war without really understanding it. The class have already produced some excellent vocabulary banks to support them with their writing next week.

Today in Science, Class 10 began their new evolution topic. They researched Charles Darwin and the discoveries he made around natural selection.

Remember PE days are Monday and Wednesday.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Class 10 Weekly News

Well done to everyone in Class 10 who took part in the rugby tournament this afternoon, it was brilliant to see your enthusiasm for giving something new a go and your collaboration with your peers. Also, well done to all Class 10 children who have sung in one or both choir performances this week, Mrs Cartwright has been blown away by all of you.

This week Class 10 have still been working extremely hard, and have coped well on this countdown to Christmas. They enjoyed learning about BREXIT in Geography where they identified reasons to remain and reason to leave, before coming to a decision themselves about what they might have voted.

In Literacy, Class 10 have wrote their own fictional story based on The Midnight Fair. They were able to make the story their own by changing who took over the midnight fair. They had: Santa and his elves taking over, aliens, robots and jungle animals. I am looking forward to reading these over the weekend.

Remember that the Christmas post box is by the school door where children enter in the morning, please remind your child to post them into the box. On Monday afternoon, 1pm-3pm, Class 10 are hosting a Christmas bingo in the hall for grandparents. There will be refreshments and prizes for the winners.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!
