Class 2 weekly update

Dear parents/carers,

What a brilliant week in Class 2!

In Maths, Year 1 have been revising our 2 and 10 timetables. We have been practising counting in 2s and 10s, understanding that this is a quicker method for counting larger amounts of objects than counting in 1s. Reception children have been using a Rekenrek to explore number, matching numeral to quantity and also looking to find quantities that are greater, smaller or equal to a given amount. Towards the end of the week, all children enjoyed coronation themed maths activities.

In English, Year 1 children have been introduced to contractions and looked at some spelling rules relating to these. They have then applied their knowledge in their writing by producing a piece of work outlining what they’d wear, eat and live if they were a King or Queen. Reception children read their new story ‘Stickman’ and began to order the story using time connectives to orally rehearse. They also created invitations, inviting Mrs North to our coronation picnic!

In History, Year 1 have begun to look at similarities and differences between Victorian holidays and holidays today. The children have applied their knowledge from our English topic on Queen Victoria’s bathing machine and also looked at other similarities and differences in sun protection and activities on the beach.

In Science, Year 1 have been closely observing their sunflowers, looking what features have grown and measuring the height of them.

Reception children have enjoyed continuous provision activities related to the coronation. They have also focussed on the lifecycle of a butterfly, with activities available to creating symmetry paintings and construct mini beast homes.

The children had a wonderful time at our coronation picnic on Friday. They had been busy making their crowns and were so excited to take part in the parade! Many thanks to all of the parents/carers that came to celebrate with us.

Reminders

  • Monday 1st May is a Bank Holiday so school will not be open.

P.E

Class 2 will have their P.E lesson on Tuesday and Friday.

Have a great long weekend. See you on Tuesday.

Class 2 – Snow day update!

Good morning parents/carers/children,

What an exciting day!

As a result of the school closure, we have uploaded some maths, literacy, and science tasks for the children to access at home through the Seesaw app. We understand that children will be eager to get outside and play in the snow, so our science activities link to some snow day fun!

Reception children have been writing sentences from their current text ‘Lost in the Toy Museum’. Today I would like you to think about your favourite part of the story. Your task today is to draw me a picture of your favourite part and then write me a sentence to describe what is happening. I will upload a picture of our sound mat to support you.

In literacy, Year 1 children have begun to gather research to create a fact-file on shops in our local community. Yesterday the children worked in pairs to research two shops and have begun to record their findings. Today we would like children to continue their research and write a few sentences about their findings. When gathering information think about what service they provide, the opening times, where they are located and who may visit them.

Reception maths. Reception children have been working very hard on their doubles and I am amazed by their speedy recall! We have also begun to look at odd and even numbers. Your task today is to upload me a picture of your favourite toys and talk about what odd and even features it might have. (for example, a car has 4 wheels – this is an even amount. A doll has two arms, this is an even amount. A teddy bear has one nose – this is an odd amount).

Y1 maths. Children are consolidating their knowledge on addition and subtraction within 20. They have learnt a number of methods to support their learning, such as using a number line and using concrete resources in a part, part, whole model. Today we are asking children to complete missing number problems. If you have access to BBC Iplayer, children can watch the numberblocks episode ‘The Legend of Big Tum’ (season 3, episode 18) to support their understanding. Children can then use their number line to find the difference in order to understand the missing number. If they are finding this concept difficult, children could use everyday objects (such as dry pieces of pasta or small toys) and a drawn copy of the part, part whole model to find the missing number. Children should collect the total amount of items and then set aside the known part in order to find the missing part. For example, in the equation 8 + ___ = 12, children should collect 12 objects, set 8 aside as the known part and then count how many objects are left to find the missing part. Alternatively, children using a number line should start at 8 and see how many jumps are required to get to 12.

Have a great day! Stay safe and have fun!

See you on Monday,

Mrs Jones.

Class 2 Weekly Update

Dear parents/carers,

Wow! What a fantastic, busy first week back at the school. The children looked wonderful on world book day and we were impressed by their outfits.

In Maths, Year 1 have been adding and subtracting 1-digit and 2-digit numbers. Reception children have been learning about doubles. They are able to speedily recall simple doubles and understand when an equation shows a double and when it does not.

In Literacy, the whole school have been reading The Sad Little Fact. In Class 2, we have used hot seating to explore the facts feelings, created body biographies to annotate how the fact was feeling and thinking throughout the story and created sentences that show the facts emotions at the beginning and end of the story.

In RE all children started their new topic on Christianity, and we learnt the holy week. We found out that Christians celebrate Palm Sunday, and we drew pictures to show what happened on that day. We also re-enacted Jesus arriving in Jerusalem with palm leaves.

In Geography, Year 1 started their new topic all about our local area. We explored our school grounds using maps and navigated our own map of the playground to find built and non-built features. It was lots of fun!

In Science, we learnt about the five different food groups and what a healthy plate should look like.

Reception children have started thier new topic by looking at the book ‘Lost in the Toy Museum’. Children have created some fantastic sentences using adjectives and conjunctions, I could not be more proud! This topic will have a history link where children will think about toys which are new and toys which are old. We have a box of old toys arriving and we have already started discussion about some differences (such as using videos and video players rather than using DVDs or Ipads). If any parents or grandparents have any toys from their childhood that they would like to share with the children during next week’s parent reading session then please feel free.

Reminders

  • The children’s homework will be set on Monday the 6th of March.
  • Any paper copies of guided reading books need to be returned on Monday.

P.E

Class 2 will have their P.E lesson on Tuesday and Friday and will need to wear P.E kit on these days.

Outdoor learning will be on Thursday. During these sessions we either visit forest school or use the garden facilities in front of the classrooms.

Have a great weekend.

Class 2 weekly update

Reception

In literacy, children have finished writing the story Daisy eat your peas! Super use of fred talk and red words!

In maths we have been learning how to create the number seven. The children have blown me away with their understanding and presentation when recording into their books.

In the afternoons the children have been creating valentines day cards using handprints and their best handwriting. They have also designed, made, tasted and evaluated their pancakes thinking about the healthy food to include.

Year One:

In Maths, Year 1 have been continuing with their numbers within 20, and we have been looking at addition within 20 to end the week. Children have amazed me with their skill in using a number line to count on.

In Literacy we have written our retells of Peter Rabbit. The children have produced some wonderful work where they were able to include commas, conjunctions, and adverbs.

On Monday we had a visit from Mrs Edwards to talk about what babies need to survive. The children asked some great questions and were engaged throughout. We then created posters to share our knowledge.

In History we have finished our unit on ‘The Great Fire of London’. We had an exciting visitor in yesterday. A fireman came in and spoke to the children about his job, the equipment he uses and the uniform he wears. The children were able to tell him lots of facts about The Great Fire of London and asked some great questions! We then recreated pudding lane with the fantastic houses the children made as part of their homework project. The fireman set fire to a house, and we watched the fire spread, just like it did on Pudding Lane when the fire started in the bakery. This was a great experience for the children to watch. I have attached photos for you to see.

In DT we have planned, made, and evaluated our fire engines. The children made some great plans, outlined the resources they needed and what the purpose of the fire engine was for. They showed great creatives and perseverance skills when creating their fire engine.

Reminders:

  • PE – Tuesday and Friday.
  • Outdoor learning – Thursday

The children have all worked extremely hard over the last 7 week and have made amazing progress in all areas, I am very proud! I hope you all have a great half-term! Get some rest and have some fun!

Week 2 weekly update

Dear parents/carers,

What a fantastic week in Class 2!

In Maths, Year 1 have started their new topic of place value within 20, we have been learning lots about numbers within 20 and how we can show those numbers using our different mathematical resources. Reception children have been thinking about more and less and using their excellent reasoning skills to discuss whether quantities will be greater and fewer.

In English Year 1 children have been looking at our class book: The Tale of Peter Rabbit. We have been learning about punctuation such as apostrophes and commas to use within our writing. Reception children have started their new book ‘Daisy eat your peas’. The children have enjoyed retelling the story and using their expressive storytelling voices.

In History Year One children have been comparing what London looked like in 1666 compared to after the fire had happened, how the houses have changed and how the houses were not built so close together.

In Science Year 1 children have been learning about the human lifecycle, and how we have changed from babies through to toddlers and then now. We also predicted how we are going to look when we are older. If you have any baby pictures that you would like to bring in to see how we have changed from babies that would be really helpful!

Next week, to end our History topic of The Great Fire of London, Year 1 children will be having a special visitor: A Firefighter! He will be coming in to tell us lots of information about working as a firefighter, and also re-enacting how the fire spread on Pudding Lane using our cardboard houses that we created.
If you do NOT want your child’s house to be used in the demonstration please let me know.

All children have thoroughly enjoyed our games afternoon on Friday. They have worked so hard to achieve their Dojos so it was lovely to reward them for their hard work and excellent behaviour. Next week we will be voting for our half termly reward for Spring 2.

Reminders:

  • PE is Tuesday and Friday.
  • There will be outdoor learning next week.
  • Bookbags and Books need to be in every day for reading sessions
  • If you have any paper copies of the coloured Phonics guided reading books please can you return these asap.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Jones 🙂

Class 2 weekly update

Hello everyone!

Thank you all for another wonderful week in Class 2.

In literacy, Reception children have enjoyed their new text ‘Dim Sum for Everyone’. Children have explored Asian foods, with a particular focus on Chinese food due to Chinese New Year. Children enjoyed tasting the foods and then used these experiences to create their own menu, trying really hard to apply their special friends within their writing. We also looked at a story explaining the origin of Chinese New Year, thinking about which year ourselves and some family members were born in.

Year 1 children have continued their work on ‘Toby and the Great Fire of London’. They have been using the first person and past tense verbs to recount what it might have been like to experience the Great Fire of London. We used our senses to create a bank of ambitious adjectives to describe the scene, and then used role play to develop our language. Children were then able to write sentences using the conjunctions; ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘because’.

In maths, Reception children have been thinking about the concept of ‘one more’. They have used their knowledge of place value to predict quantities that are ‘one more’ than the previous quantity and then used practical equipment such as cubes, counters and die frames to prove it.

Year One children have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes. Children have been very good at recognising and sorting 2D shapes, thinking about similarities and differences in their sides and vertices to justify their reasoning for sorting. Children have been very good at talking about how they know a square is different from a rectangle and how a circle is different from an oval. We are a bit wobbly with hexagons and pentagons so we will continue this work next week. Children have been introduced to 3D shapes this week, with a focus on using their knowledge of 2D shapes to recognise the faces they can see. Children have been introduced to our new mathematical vocabulary by engaging with activities such as ‘the magic shape bag’ and ‘shape hunts’ but 3D shapes will become our main focus next week.

Children have enjoyed an outdoor learning session where they have noticed some signs of winter and explored changes within the natural environment.

PE days:

Tuesday and Friday

Outdoor learning:

Thursday

Have a great weekend and I will see you all on Monday!

Mrs Jones.
