Year 1 Home Learning- Tuesday 5th January

Year 1 children, here is your home learning for today, I can’t wait to see your work!

Phonics

It might be a good idea to make your own Phonics cards to help with our learning for the next couple of weeks. So, get some paper and cut it up into card shape and write the sounds on them. You could even draw the pictures that match if you can remember them.

Today we are going to practise the ‘special friends’ sounds we have learnt in class. Remember, special friends are two letters that make one sound. It might be a good idea to make your own Phonics cards to help with our learning for the next couple of weeks. So, get some paper and cut it up into card shape and write the sounds ‘sh’, ‘th’, ‘qu’, ‘ng’, ‘nk’, ‘ay’, ‘ee’, ‘igh’, ‘ow’, ‘oo’, ‘oo’, ‘ar’, ‘or’, ‘air’, ‘ir’ and ‘ou’ on them. You could even draw the pictures that match if you can remember them.

It might be useful to make the cards for the single letter sounds you struggle to remember, too. Only do this if you think you need to!

Now practise your speed sounds using your sound cards, how fast can you say them? (You could even test your Mum or Dad, sister or brother to see if they know their sounds!)

Starting today there will be a daily video uploaded onto the Ruth Miskin Training Youtube channel at 9:30am. You will be looking for the Set 2 Speed Sounds and Spellings lesson every day. They will be available to access for 24 hours. You can access this here:

Writing

This week we will be focusing on the story ‘The way back home’ by Oliver Jeffers and linking our learning to this with a mini theme of Space!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbyUrb0X5iU

Begin by looking at the front cover of the story. What can you see? Talk to someone about what you think the story will be about.

Watch the story and try to remember the important parts, pausing and talking about the story as you go.

Try to record as many different adjectives as you can about the plane, the moon, the boy. Remember, an adjective describes something! Remember to sound out your words.

Example: red, bumpy etc.

Now try to use your adjectives to write a sentence.

Example: I can see a red aeroplane.

Try to write at least 5 sentences, remember your capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

Maths

Here at school we use a scheme called ‘White Rose Maths’ and we are very lucky that they provide a fantastic online learning resource for us to use.

Watch the video and complete the worksheet based on what has been learnt. All you will need is a piece of paper and a pencil. Please use other resources if you think it will help you like cubes, a number line or beads.

Begin by looking at the front cover of the story. What can you see? Talk to someone about what you think the story will be about.

Watch the story and try to remember the important parts, pausing and talking about the story as you go.

Looking at the pictures of the boy getting ready to go in his plane (0:43), can you tell me what he is wearing? Draw a picture of each thing he puts on to go in his plane.

Now try to write the sound that it starts with, or you could even try to sound out the word. When you have written these words, colour in your picture.

Example: hat, coat.

*please note some sounds will not be known by the children, it’s OK to help them with these (e.g. oa, ow, ee) etc.*

Happy New Year!

Dear Hedgehogs,

I hope you have all had a well rested and enjoyable break. We are sorry we won’t be able to see you for a couple more weeks but we can’t wait until you are back.

As you know, the next couple of weeks will be led online for most of you, with children of keyworkers in school with us.

Our class email address is hedgehogs@shawburystmarys.co.uk. Please send in any work that you have completed to this address, I can’t wait to see it all!

I am really excited to see your emails with your work each day, and I hope you enjoy the activities we have planned.

We are looking forward to seeing some of you tomorrow, and the rest of you in a couple of weeks time.

Miss Davies 🙂

Reading folders

Dear Parents,

As we are not in on Friday this week, please bring in your child’s reading folder into school on Thursday 17th December for a change of book/ text ready for the holidays.

Thank you,

Miss Davies 🙂

Reading folders

Dear parents,

I have been thinking about the impact of not having the weekend to read your child’s reading book with them, and realise that this may be hard to fit into the working week. I have therefore decided that there is no reason why we can’t remove the old book, and replace it with a new one within the same day.

From this week, we will be returning your child’s reading folder to them on Friday, the same day they bring it into school.

Please remember to bring them in every Friday so we are able to change these efficiently.

Thank you,

Miss Davies 🙂

Y1 Homework

Dear Year 1 parents,

As of this week, Year 1 children will be sent home with a worksheet or task to complete in their homework folders every Friday.

Please remember to bring your child’s homework folder in every Friday to ensure they are able to bring this home with them. Please bring this homework back to school in their homework folders the following Friday, so I can remove it from the folder and put in the new homework sheet for that week.

Each week will be a different focus, switching between Maths and Literacy every week. The work will be linked to the work they are doing in class, so the children should have and understanding of the task.

Please encourage your child to complete this as independently as possible, and provide help if they need it.

Thank you for your ongoing support,

Miss Davies 🙂

Home reading and book bags

Dear Parents,

Just a quick reminder that book bags need to brought in every Friday, left in school over the weekend and new books are to be sent out on a Monday.

Reading levels have been decided based on the sounds your child knows, as well as the focus on fluency- we are trying to ensure the children are confident to read quickly and understand all that they read. Although it may seem that your child is able to read their book with ease, please focus on asking questions about what has happened and showing their understanding of the text.

Please remember to write in your child’s reading diary every time you read with them at home, the children are being given a reward if they have read and had their diary signed 3 times in one week consistently.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Thank you,

Miss Davies 🙂
