Weekly news – KS1

We have had a fantastic week in KS1.

In maths Year 1’s have been learning about halves and quarters, knowing that fractions need to be equal parts. Year 2’s have finished their unit on fractions. They have started to learn how to tell the time to 5 minutes. We learnt when we say past the hour and when we say to the hour.

In literacy we used our computing skills to use the iPads to research Rio De Janeiro for them to create fact files and lists next week.

We had so much fun in PE today. We learnt striking and fielding skills and put these skills into different games. All children showed great teamwork and collaboration when fielding to get the balls!

Reminders:

  • PE Tuesday and Friday
  • Reading books to be in everyday

Have a great weekend 🙂

What a great first week to our final summer term!

In maths, Year 1 have been exploring numbers up to 50. We have been partitioning numbers into tens and ones, and using dienes to support our learning. Year 2 have been consolidating previous learning. We have recapped adding and subtracting two two-digit numbers, number bonds to 100 and solving two-step problems.

In literacy we have started a new book ‘There’s a rang-tan in my bedroom’. This book is a lovely book to show the impact products with palm oil have on orangutans and their habitat. We have retold this story using a story map and discussed the characters thoughts and feelings.

In Geography we have started a new unit ‘Window to the World: Brazil’. We have identified where Brazil is and the human and physical features Brazil has.

This week we finished off our art unit from last half term. We use lino to create prints on our collages to create a pirate ship on a sea collage background.

Class 3 Weekly Update

Happy half term everyone!

What an exciting final week of half term we had 😊

In maths, year 1 have been learning about numbers up to 50, practicing counting and recognising patterns. In year 2 we have been comparing mass and measuring objects in grams.

We have really enjoyed our literacy lessons this week learning about tongue twisters. We wrote our own tongue twisters based upon our topic ‘Pirates’, so we used lots of words with the ‘p’ sound. The children thoroughly enjoyed sharing their poems and challenging their peers to read them.

We had a fantastic day on Wednesday with our special visitor, Captain Jim Bones! The children really enjoyed themselves and could ask great questions based upon the knowledge they have gained from our history topic this half term. The morning consisted of listening to pirate facts, playing with jig dolls, and learning a pirate dance routine and song. I have attached some photos from the day below 🙂

In History, we finished our topic of Pirates by answering our enquiry question ‘Should we call Grace O’Malley a pirate?’. We had great discussions surrounding this question, we designed front covers and blurbs of a book about Grace O’Malley, before answering the question itself. It was great to see the children’s individual opinions based upon what we have learnt.

Reminders:

  • Books and reading records to be in school every day.
  • PE is on Tuesdays and Fridays.
  • Academy Photography is in school on Monday 3rd June for class photographs, please ensure your child is in the correct uniform.

We love how enthusiastic our children are about reading and want to encourage this as much as possible. Attached are some recommended reads for your children

Special Visitor

A quick email reminder that children in classes 3, 4 and 5 have a special visitor in tomorrow morning (Wednesday 22nd May 2024).

If you would like to send your child in a pirate costume then please do 🙂 We will take lots of photos and videos to share with you after the event.

If your child usually has PE on a Wednesday, this is no longer happening to accomodate the visitor.

Kind regards

Mrs Edwards

Class 3 Weekly Update

Another fantastic week in KS1!

This week we checked on our cress seeds that we planted in science last week. We found that our cress seeds in the cupboard had grown taller than the ones outside, but they were yellow with white stems and seemed very droopy. The cress seeds in the window looked much healthier as they were green and stood up tall and strong. The children concluded that seeds do not need light to start growing, just warmth, however the cress in the cupboard we didn’t fancy eating!

In Maths Year 1 have been comparing volume and measuring capacity. Year 2 have continued with their learning on multiplication and division.

The children have been reading, editing, and improving their story writing this week ready to publish their stories. We have been using purple pencils to make corrections such as missed capital letters, full stops, and other punctuation marks. The children are also encouraged to improve sentences by adding in adjectives and checking they make sense.

We have continued looking at pirates in history. This week in history we have been looking at what happened when Grace O’Malley met Queen Elizabeth I. We thought about what both females would have said to each other at the time and what they would have been thinking.

Reminders:

  • Books and reading records to be in school every day.
  • PE is on Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Please consent and pay for our special visitor on Arbor so this special event can go ahead. I have attached some ideas for home made costumes as an example should you wish to dress your child up for the day (Wednesday 22nd May ’24).

Have a super weekend!

Class 3 Weekly Update

What a great week in KS1!

We have looked at what plants need to stay healthy and what seeds/bulb need to start to germinate. We have planned a class investigation to see if seeds need warmth and light or just warmth to start growing. We have also observed our plants from last week to see if a bulb or a seed grows the quickest.

In maths Year 2 are continuing to look at multiplication and division. In Year 1, we have been learning about mass and have started our learning on Volume.

In Literacy we have made a start on our story writing. We are writing a story like our class book ‘Captain Beastlies Pirate Party’ but changing a few things to make it our own.

We have continued looking at pirates in history. This week in history we have looked at two pirates ‘Blackbeard’ and ‘Henry Morgan’. We used different types of evidence to gather information and facts.

Reminders:

  • Books and reading records to be in school every day.
  • PE is on Tuesday and Wednesday
  • Please consent and pay for our special visitor on Arbor.
  • Monday 6th is a bank holiday.

Have a lovely weekend

Class 3 Weekly Update

What a fantastic week in KS1

The year 2’s have had their first superstars PE lesson this week with Miss Berg. Miss Berg will be delivering one of the Year 2’s PE lessons every week. She will be looking at the importance of teamwork and working together. The year 1’s have had PE with Miss Smith and it has been lovely to see them so excited over their PE sessions.

We have introduced our new science unit ‘plants’. We started by looking at a famous botanist ‘David Bellamy’. We then made posters (year 1) and double page spreads (year 2) to showcase our learning on the scientist.

In maths, year 1 have been learning to subtract using their number bonds, finding the difference and investigating related facts. Year 2 have started looking at the multiplication symbol and arrays. The children have been fantastic at this and know you can use the commutative law in multiplication e.g. 2 x 5 = 10 and 5 x 2 = 10.

In Literacy we have started our new class book ‘Captain Beastlie’s Pirate Party’. We made predictions about the book, created a story map and a story board to show what happens in the book.

We also started our new History unit ‘Pirates’. We learnt lots about pirates, the rules they obey, who is on a ship and the clothing they wore. The children were very engaged and learnt lots as they created posters about pirates.

Reminders:

  • Books and reading records to be in school every day.
  • PE is on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Have a super weekend! 🙂
