LKS2 weekly update

Another great week full of exciting learning 🙂

In English, we have begun writing about a journey from Shawbury to Birmingham (on foot or bike). We have chosen powerful vocabulary to describe the different checkpoints we would reach on our journey and used this vocabulary to write the first paragraph(s) of our journey. We are looking forward to continuing our writing until we reach our destination.

The Fastest Boy in the World : Laird, Elizabeth, Peter Bailey: Amazon.co.uk: BooksWe are continuing to read the Fastest boy in the world, this week we have been shocked by what we have discovered in the story. The children will be keen to talk about what surprised them and what we now know about Solomon’s grandfather, the ‘arrow’ !

In computing, we have been learning about stop-frame animation. We have learnt what ‘frames’ are and how simple frames can be put together to create a short animation. Some of us have used the app ‘imotion’ to create our own simple animation videos using stop frames. It was great fun seeing our still images come to life. Have a look at a couple of animations that the children created.

Over the last few weeks, Mrs Cartwright, Miss Wade and the choir children have been working so hard to learn and practice a set of songs that they went to perform at St. Chad’s church in Shrewsbury on Tuesday evening. What a wonderful opportunity for the children to have performed in such a beautiful church. Thank you to Mrs Cartwright, Miss Wade, the choir children and their parents and carers for supporting the children and helping the performance go ahead. Well done all ! – pictures to follow when we receive them 🙂

Beechwood Primary School: Homework

We would like the children to continue reading regularly at home, practice their spellings (these are in their log books) and practice regularly on times tables rockstars. We are reminding the children to read 3 or more times a week to / with an adult so that they can earn a tick on our reading rocket charts.

Thank you for the continued support.

Miss Taylor, Miss Hodson, Miss Wade and Mrs Cartwright.

LKS2 Weekly update

Another busy week of learning this week 🙂

The Fastest Boy in the World : Laird, Elizabeth, Peter Bailey: Amazon.co.uk: BooksWe are continuing to read the Fastest boy in the world, we have been discussing and asking ourselves the questions – Why did Solomon’s Grandfather want to visit Piazza?, What happened in the past ? How is Solomon feeling at this point of the story. We are enjoying the book and want to know what happens next.

In our Design Technology topic of ‘Castles’. We have learnt about the features of a castle and the roles and purposes of different castle features. We have just designed the castle model that we will be making. We have used 2d and 3d shape vocabulary to describe our castle design. We will be exploring making 3d shapes using shape nets next week.

In PSHE, we have been learning about how our actions can impact other people’s feelings. We have thought about ways that show we care about other people’s feelings and ways to show empathy towards others. We have talked about what compassion means to us in our Picture News class assemblies. We also considered how rewards and consequences influence behaviour.

LKS2 Weekly update

This week has been assessment week for the children. They have worked so hard to do their best and show off what they have learnt. Well done 🙂

Customised Holographic Well Done Pow Stickers | 35mm

The Fastest Boy in the World : Laird, Elizabeth, Peter Bailey: Amazon.co.uk: BooksIn between assessments, we have been continuing to read and discuss ‘The fastest boy in the world’. We have reached the part in the story where the main character Solomon and his grandfather travel to Piazza to visit family, but when they arrive, the family are unwelcoming and we predict that something has happened in the past to make them so hostile.

Geography – Petersfield Infant SchoolIn our Geography topic of ‘Cities, counties and regions’ we have begun to explore how the United Kingdom is split into these different areas and what their characteristics are. The children completed a double page spread full of facts about counties in England and have created an informative leaflet about visiting a city.

Three Things Most People Don't Grasp about Growth Mindset | Teacher BookerOn Wednesday, KS2 had a ‘Growth mindset’ workshop with Rackeem Reid. Rackeem talked about the importance of developing resilience and ‘I can’ attitudes to build confidence and aid in being successful now and in the future. He also explained the differences between a ‘fixed’ and a ‘growth’ mindset and made links to successful celebrities who show/showed dedication and hardwork in their careers.

Beechwood Primary School: Homework

Along with asking the children to read regularly at home, practice their spellings and practice regularly on times tables rockstars, we have sent home an extra piece of homework this week which is optional but useful for the children. It’s a question sheet based on watching an animation over the weekend. Our new computing topic is animation so this will help the children make links between what they know already and what we will be learning about next.

Please bring any completed animation homework sheets back into school by next Wednesday 🙂

Thank you for the continued support.

LKS2 Weekly update

Apologies for not posting an update last week, I have included the things we have been up to over the last 2 weeks.

Pencil Clipart Images | Free Download | PNG Transparent Background - PngtreeIn writing, we have been learning about D-day, the day that marked the beginning of an operation in World War 2. The children used powerful and emotive vocabulary to write letters as if they were soldiers involved in the D-day landings.

Numbers clipart. Free download transparent .PNG | CreazillaIn Maths, we have begun using our knowledge of place value to add and subtract. We are learning the different methods we can use to add and subtract from given numbers (up to 100/1000). We have talked lots about what an ‘efficient’ method is and why we may choose one method rather than another. We are continuing to practice times tables and encourage the children to continue accessing times tables rock stars at home so that they can develop and apply their knowledge of times tables in all areas of our maths learning.

Biology Stock Illustrations – 710,453 Biology Stock Illustrations, Vectors & Clipart - Dreamstime In Science, we have just started our new topic of sound. We have been  thinking about how children or adults that have hearing difficulties communicate in ways other than speaking and listening and to demonstrate our understanding, we have learnt songs using British sign language which we hope you enjoyed in the Class 8’s assembly.

The Fastest Boy in the World : Laird, Elizabeth, Peter Bailey: Amazon.co.uk: BooksIn whole class reading, we have begun our new book ‘The fastest boy in the world’ written by famous author Elizabeth Laird. We are really enjoying the book so far and are looking forward to what we will find out next about how / if Solomon achieves  his dreams of becoming a running hero in Ethiopia.

Clip-on Poppy | Buy a Poppy | Poppy Shop UKTo mark Remembrance day, we went to church for a remembrance service delivered by the Year 5s. It was such a lovely service and we spent the morning reflecting, remembering and giving thanks to those who served.

We have also been busy with additional learning opportunities over the last two weeks such as an exciting and informative visit for the Year 3s from the Hodnet/Wellington fire department to learn about fire safety. The children (and staff) got to try on a helmet which very heavy and made it difficult to hear, they also practiced the ‘stop, drop and roll’ manoeuvre.

We also had a Picture News assembly that was about British values, we listened to ‘Pop n Olly’ who talked about how everyone should have a voice and be treated equally. We thought about the importance of being ready, respectful and safe in school and how when we follow the school rules, no one is discriminated against.

Thank you for the continued support.

Miss Taylor, Miss Hodson, Miss Wade and Mrs Cartwright.

LKS2 weekly update

We were so lucky to be visited by young archer, Max Oakley. He talked to the whole school about his archery journey, his accomplishments so far, his hopes for the future and encouraged the children to look for local clubs and attend ‘have a go days’ to try out archery. We have all been inspired after learning more about this interesting sport.

KS2 were able to go outside to watch an archery demonstration, we thought it was amazing!

Pencil Clipart Images | Free Download | PNG Transparent Background - PngtreeIn LKS2, we have continued our writing based on The Lost Thing, we are really getting into the story and are intrigued to find out what the ‘thing’ does next. We have been choosing and using ambitious and powerful vocabulary to improve our sentences.

Numbers clipart. Free download transparent .PNG | CreazillaIn Maths, we have reached the end of our Place value unit and are ready to move onto addition and subtraction, we will be using our knowledge and skills learnt over the last few weeks to help us add and subtract numbers.

Biology Stock Illustrations – 710,453 Biology Stock Illustrations, Vectors & Clipart - DreamstimeIn Science, we are continuing to learn about digestion and the children have asked (and we’ve answered) lots of questions about POO! They will be able to tell you about where digestion begins and ends and the jobs of different organs during the digestion process.

Please continue to encourage your child/children to read to/with an adult as much as possible at home and to practice their spellings and times tables.

Thank you for your continued support.

Miss Taylor, Mrs Cartwright, Miss Wade and Miss Hodson.

LKS2 weekly update

We have had another fun filled week in lower key stage 2.
In our English lessons, the children have spent the week writing their newspaper reports based on the comparison between the old school in Shawbury and our current school, they included first hand quotes from the staff interviews and interesting facts about what school life was like over 10 years ago.

In Science, we are continuing to learn about teeth and their role in the digestive system. This week we have set up an experiment to observe how different liquids can affect our teeth enamel, we have used eggs to represent enamel and will be observing and discussing any changes over the next week.

We are getting stuck into maths and developing our place value knowledge and skills.

Homework:

A few parents have asked about Seesaw logins so we just wanted to update you with our homework arrangements this term as we are not currently using Seesaw to post homework tasks on.
Currently the children’s homework is to:

  • Read as much as possible to/with an adult (4 or more times a week will earn them a tick on our reading rocket which leads to bronze, silver and gold certificates)
  • Practice times tables on Times tables rockstars, times tables are so important in lots of mathematics areas and we encourage the children to practice as much as possible to help with speed and accuracy.
  • Practice the spellings that are given to the children in Year 3 and 4 every Monday, they write these in their  ‘log books’ that they bring home each day. They are then tested on these spellings on a Friday. We would like the children to practice reading and writing these words so that they can apply the learnt spelling rule into their reading and writing.

A polite reminder that the children need to wear suitable PE kits on their PE days, a white top/ polo shirt and black  or navy shorts / joggers with no large logos.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Taylor, Mrs Cartwright, Miss Wade and Miss Hodson.

LKS2 weekly update

We have had a busy week in lower key stage 2!

We are very lucky to have several members of staff currently working at St Mary’s that also worked at the previous school site. This year, it marks 10 years since our current St Mary’s CE Primary school and Nursery opened and the children had the opportunity to become reporters and interview some members of staff to find out what school life used to be like before the new building. The children came up with their own questions that they wanted to ask and will use the valuable information gathered to include in their own newspaper reports in Literacy. Please let us know if you know anything about the old school site that we would find interesting 🙂

This week, we also started our Read, write, inc spelling programme. Each day in class, the children will complete spelling activities based on a new spelling rule that is introduced to them in Monday’s spelling lesson. Throughout the week they will add words to learn in their ‘log books’. These log books should come home with the children at the end of each day and be bought back into school every morning (along with their reading books and diaries). We encourage the children to read, write and practice the spellings in their log books at home to learn the different spelling rules and word examples so that they can apply them into their writing.

We  are so pleased with how many children have accessed and had a go on Times tables rockstars – https://ttrockstars.com/  The year 4s have had quite a competitive tournament going on this week! The children’s logins have been sent home on individual letters and put in their reading diaries. Please don’t worry if your child’s login says their previous year group, it does not mean the work set is for their previous year group, just an admin error. Please keep playing and practicing times tables 🙂

Thank you for your support,

Any queries or questions, please let us know.

Miss Taylor, Miss Hodson, Mrs Cartwright and Miss Wade.

LKS2 weekly update

We can’t quite believe that we have finished our first week in Year 3 and 4 ! We have had such a great first week in our new classes, making new friends and getting stuck straight into school life and learning after our six week break.

Each week we will be sending out an update for parents/carers to let you all know what we have been up to in lower key stage 2 🙂

We have sent all of the children home with new reading diaries and reading books this week, we encourage the children to read to/with an adult at home at least 4 times a week and for the adult to sign their reading diaries to let us know when they have read, it could be reading just for 5 minutes if that’s all that can be squeezed in 🙂

Reading 4 times a week will earn the children a tick on our reading rocket record, each tick leads to a bronze, silver and eventually a gold reading award. If you have any questions/queries about the children’s books, please let us know as the book banding is slightly different to KS1.

Here is our plan for the Autumn term (1st half), our topic is ‘My identity and my heritage’. Medium term plan – website

Thank you for your support,

Miss Taylor, Miss Hodson, Miss Wade and Mrs Cartwright.

LKS2 weekly update

Wow, another busy week in LKS2, we can’t believe that there is only 1 week to go until the end of the year!

This week, we performed our class assemblies to our parents/carers which was an opportunity for all the children to show off the work that they are proud of for this year. We hope you enjoyed seeing just a small snippet of the things they have been doing in Year 3 / 4.

We explored shadows in Science and were set the challenge to see what letters or words we could create using the shadows of the objects in our classroom, there was lots of scientific vocabulary being used as we explored.

We have performed and been ‘hotseated’ as Noah as we learnt about story from the bible, we asked questions to each other to make us consider how Noah may have been feeling when God asked him to build an Ark.

In Geography, we planned and delivered a weather report to our classes based on the Northern or southern hemisphere of the world.

And finally, (and probably what the children will have remembered from this week) is that Class 8 had an unexpected guest in the classroom on Thursday, much to Mrs Taylor’s surprise…

Next week

Next week, as we are nearing the end of the year, we will be sorting out our classrooms and the children’s books/belongings from over the year.

Please could each child bring in a heavy duty carrier bag ( a ‘bag for life’ would be good) on Monday so that they have an extra bag in school for when we are able to send all of their past books home. This is likely to be on Thursday but we may send home some books/belongings different days.

Thank you very much 🙂
