Class 9 Weekly News

Class 9 have had an excellent week this week and have continued to work extremely hard. On Monday, they had an amazing trip to Ironbridge visiting the China Museum and The Jackfield Museum. They learnt about the trade and development of tea and made their own small tea cups. They are looking forward to painting these next week. At the Jackfield museum, they enjoyed exploring how tiles and pattern on tiles have changed over time.

In Literacy, Class 9 have continued their flashback writing based on The Chocolate Tree. This week they designed their own God for their own flashback writing. They had to consider their God’s appearance, personality, voice, actions, mannerisms and habits. Next week, they will use this vocabulary to develop their God through their writing.

In Science, Class 9 have been learning about Earth and Space. This week they debated whether the moon landings were real or fake. They had to summarise evidence that supported or went against the moon landing, and then come to their own conclusions.

Please remember to bring in any reading books the children have at home that belong to school by Friday.

Have a lovely weekend.

Class 9 Weekly Update

Class 9 have had another excellent week. They are working so hard to still produce excellent week even though the summer holidays are fast approaching. In Literacy, Class 9 have continued focusing on The Chocolate Tree and have been busy exploring the main characters this week. They started the week with a hot seating activity. This enabled them to play the role of the two main Gods and dive deeper into understanding the actions and thoughts of these characters through a variety of questions. After this, we gathered a class vocabulary bank and they used this to write character profiles about the two Gods.

In Maths, Class 9 have been focusing on decimals. They have been adding and subtracting decimals with the same and different number of decimal places. This has allowed them to recap column method, from autumn term, and apply this method with decimal numbers. Class 9 have picked this skill up quickly and next week will move on to multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000 and developing an understanding of negative numbers.

In RE this week, Class 9 have continued their work around the kingdom of God. They focused on how Christians show their beliefs in the kingdom through their actions. This includes songs. Class 9 discussed this and then used songmaker to create their own songs about the kingdom of God. Their final songs were brilliant and they enjoyed sharing them with each other.

Remember Class 9 will be going to Ironbridge on Monday. They need to bring a packed lunch, appropriate footwear and waterproof coats just in case it rains. Make sure children arrive to school on time as the coach will be leaving promptly at 9am.

Finally, I would like to say I am over the moon to be moving up to year 6 with the class and we had a brilliant transition day together producing art work to go on display in our new classroom.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Class 9 Weekly News

Class 9 have had an excellent week this week. They have worked extremely hard to complete their work and have produced some excellent work. I have loved seeing them express themselves in Art. They have been creating pattern designs from different countries ready for their final piece. All patterns have been unique and creative.

In addition to this, Class 9 have read and began to explore a new focus book; The Chocolate Tree. We read the book and summarised the story, creating a glossary of words that we were unsure of the meaning of. After this, Class 9 explored the actions and thoughts of the God Kukulkan and the Maya civilisation. They discussed three questions based around the characters actions/thoughts and used a conscience alley to present their ideas to the rest of the class.

In Maths, Class 9 have finished focusing on shape and angles. They identified angles on a straight line and find the properties of 3D shapes. In Geography this week, Class 9 learnt about food trade, and how food is imported and exported around the world. They located countries around the world where our food is imported from.

Please remember that next week on Tuesday 4th July, children will take part in move on day. Please reassure your child that change is normal and we are here to support them.

Have a lovely weekend!

Class 9 Weekly News

Class 9 have had a fantastic week this week! Well done to all of them for being absolutely amazing on Sports Day, your behaviour was brilliant and you all pushed yourself to try your absolute best in every race.

This week has been assessment week and everyone has worked extremely hard to concentrate and achieve high scores. I am very proud of everything they achieved and they have proven just how much they have learnt over the year. Well done Class 9, I am so proud of each and every one of you.

In school this week each key stage was given a religion to focus on for Inter Faith Week. Class 9 learnt about Buddhism and created their own Wheel of Life, creating new realms and symbols. They also learnt how Buddhists write prayers on flags and hang them outside temples, believing that each time the wind blows the flag, the prayer is repeated. Class 9 then wrote their own prayers and we hung them up in the classroom.

Next week, Class 9 are going to look at food trade in Geography. They will identify countries where our food is imported from, so any food packaging would be grateful appreciated.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Class 9 Weekly News

Class 9 have had another brilliant week. They have coped so well in the heat and continued to work extremely hard. In Maths, Class 9 have been developing their skills by learning how to measure angles using a protractor. To begin the week they classified acute, obtuse and reflex angles. After this, they used their knowledge of degrees of turn to find missing angles around a point.

In Literacy, Class 9 have been writing sections of their journey stories. This week they changed the setting the refugees had to travel across to the high mountains. As a class, we changed the setting to the ocean. Class 9 produced some excellent writing of the new setting, using ambitious vocabulary and taught grammatical skills from the previous weeks. Next week, they will be writing their final version of the story.

In Geography, Class 9 started their new topic. The new topic for this half term is called Global Trading. This week they were introduced to what trade is, how trade has become global and created group timelines showing the changes in trade from The Stone Age to the 17th Century, to the 21st Century.

Lastly, well done to all the children who took part in the swimming gala today, you all did amazingly.

Please remember to send your child in on Monday in their PE kit for sports day practice. Tuesday 20th June is sports day, so children need to be in their PE kits again.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Class 9 Weekly News

Class 9 have had an excellent first week back. They have been fantastic at getting straight back into following the school rules and values. This half terms value is ambition. On Monday’s assembly the children were asked about their ambitions for this half term, the next year and their future. Please talk about ambition with your children at home and encourage them to think about their life long ambitions.

In Literacy, Class 9 have continued exploring the story The Journey. They have focused on using different pronouns in their writing and using outside/inside thoughts to develop character descriptions. In Maths, Class 9 have finished statistics and are now focusing on shape. This has included looking at degrees and identifying the degree of different turns. You could use this knowledge at home when telling the time. For example, how many degrees has the clock hand turned since 11am. This is a great way to embed their knowledge as well practising telling the time.

In Geography, Class 9 finished their Settlement and Migration topic. They ended the unit by focusing on refugees. They identified countries were refugees were highest, locating these countries on a map and researched the current events in Sudan, where thousands of refugees are fleeing the violence in Sudan.

This week Class 9 also spent Thursday at Thomas Adams Secondary School. I heard wonderful things about their day and hope that eased their worries about going to secondary school in the future.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Re: Thomas Adams School – Year 5 Taster Day Experience, 8th June 2023

My name is Lea Winter and I am responsible for KS2-3 Transition here at Thomas Adams School, Wem. I am contacting you via your child’s primary school to share details of an exciting opportunity that we hope your child will wish to take part in.
I am delighted to announce that we will once again be holding our Year 5 Taster Day Experience which will provide your child with the opportunity to visit Thomas Adams School and be involved with some exciting taster sessions in a variety of subject areas including Technology, Graphics, History, Geography, PE and Science.

St Mary’s Year 5 students are invited on Thursday 8th June between 9.30am and 2.30pm. Your child should attend the event in his/her usual primary school uniform, bring a packed lunch and their school bag/pencil case. We would also ask that your child brings a pair or trainers in his/her bag for the PE session (no other PE kit is required).

I very much hope that you will support this event and feel that it will be an excellent opportunity for your child. Students should arrive at 9.30am for a 9.45 start and enter by the main entrance and be collected at 2.30pm – again from the front of the school. Please note that the site will be drop off only at the start of the day entering from the Pyms road entrance (rear) and exiting on to Lowe Hill road (front). There will be no on-site parking available and there will be no vehicle access at the end of the day – please park off-site to collect your child from the main
entrance.

Please confirm your child’s place at this event by contacting Mrs Howells (Head’s PA) by email  (bjh@thomasadams.net) or phone (01939 237000). You will need to provide your child’s name, primary school, your name/emergency contact number and any medical/dietary/allergy/SEND information as appropriate.
