A new beginning!

Dear Parents/Carers,

I wanted to write a quick post to say a huge thank you for all of the time and effort you have put into home schooling and working with your children away from school. It is recognised and appreciated.

We are all so excited to see the children we have been missing for so long on Monday and I’m sure the children are all excited to come in.

I wanted to reassure you that I am aware some children may be feeling anxious or nervous coming into school after such a long time. We will be ready and smiling on Monday morning and have some lovely activities planned to settle us back into school slowly!

Just a few reminders before we return as a full class:

  • Tuesday is our P.E. day, now taught by P.E. teaching professionals from an outside agency that come into school. They are amazing and the children have loved them so far. Your child is required to come into school wearing P.E. kit on this day.
  • On Fridays, please bring your children’s bookbags into school so we can check if they have read 3 times a week (for our reading rocket rewards) and give them a new book/ditty sheet to take home and any homework (Year 1s).
  • Hand sanitiser is provided by school so there isn’t any need to bring in your own from home.
  • There are allocated lines for each class, so if you could, please remain in our class line at the end of the day so that we can ensure a safe distance is maintained and the children are released safely each day. Please be patient with me releasing them in this way, it may take a little longer than in ‘normal’ times!
  • I am always here to help, if you ever have anything to ask or tell me, both in the mornings and after school, just ask!
  • We now have a class email, so please email this if you ever have any queries or worries if you are unable to speak to me in person. It is hedgehogs@shawburystamrys.co.uk
  • Start time is 8:50am in our class and the children will be released at 3:10pm.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend,

See you on Monday!

Miss Davies 🙂

Home learning- Friday 5th March- Reception

Here is your final day of home learning, we are so excited to see you on Monday.

Phonics

If your child has moved onto Set 2, we will have Friday as a consolidation day. This week I would like you to practise writing the following words using fred fingers, practising some of previous taught sounds.

Get an adult to read these to you, use your fred fingers to think about how many sounds it has, say the word, pinch the sounds.

Words: green, blip, day, munch, crib, nest, queen, say.

If you feel that your child would benefit from revisiting the Set 1 sounds, then follow the link to find the Ruth Miskin YouTube channel, where they will continue these sounds daily.

https://www.youtube.com/c/RuthMiskinTrainingEdu/videos

Maths

On a Friday our maths lesson is used to practise the skills we have learnt throughout the week. It is chance for us to explore and play using the ideas we now know.

For this week we have been looking at measuring length and height and being able to order these. We have also began to look at the numbers 9 and 10.

Here are some ideas for different ways to explore length and height at home.

  • Draw around your hands and feet and measure how many cubes (or other equipment, lego, sticks) long your hands and feet are.
  • Make some playdough worms and measure how long they are, then put them in order.
  • Collect lots of items from around the house and have a go at placing these in order from the smallest to the biggest.
  • Cut some strips of paper and compare them, which is longer?
  • How tall can you make a tower? See what you can use around the house to make a tower. I wonder if someone else in your house can beat you and make a taller one.

Have fun exploring today!

Writing

On Fridays in school, we usually spend our Literacy lesson practising our letter formation, I have attached a few worksheets you could use to practise, however I am happy for you to do this in any way you would like. E.g. chalk outside, in sand, using flour on a table and writing with your finger, on paper, whiteboards etc.

Within this session you could also practise using your fine motor skills (using fingers and small movements). This could be using scissors to cut, using tweezers to pick things up etc.

Have fun!

Extension: Practise letters when writing short words- e.g. cat, dog, man, pin etc.

Today we are going to continue to develop skills in drawing lines and practise our control with our pencil.

Using this worksheet, I would like you to draw different lines using different pencils. You can use a normal pencil, coloured pencils, pens, chalk etc. You could even experiment drawing lines in different ways. Curved lines, straight lines, wavy lines etc.

Worksheet: Line drawing practise

Here is an example of using lines in each space on the worksheet.

Have a lovely weekend, see you on Monday!

Enjoy!

Maths

In school we use Friday’s maths lesson to complete an arithmetic quiz to practise some of our important skills we need in Maths this year.

Here is this week’s arithmetic test, try to do this by yourself with no help using some equipment to support.

The Ugly Duckling

Today we are going to check our work from yesterday and add anything that we need to add.

One of the skills we need to practise in Year One is editing writing that we have written.

Have a go at reading the writing that you have completed and change anything that doesn’t make sense.

Ask an adult to check your spellings and change any they find are incorrect. You could use a dictionary or the internet to find the correct spelling.

Try to complete all edits in another coloured pencil so you can see what you have changed.

Afternoon

World book day activities!

Here are a few ideas for activities you could do this afternoon, remember to join our Zoom call so that we can see all of your wonderful Character costumes this afternoon at 2pm.

Today we will be having a go at role playing the story to remember the important parts that happened. Tomorrow we will be trying to write some sentences in the Ugly Duckling’s Diary about how he feels and what happened, so pretend to be the duckling today and explore how you are feeling when the other animals are unkind, when you see your swan friends etc.

Science

Last week I asked you to gather lots of different items made from different materials. I would like you to discuss with your family what materials these items are made from. Use some words to describe them.

You could ask your child to find something that is made from plastic, wood etc and see if they are able to distinguish between material and item. Help them with this if they are unsure.

If you would like to you can record these items on a piece of paper, choose four materials and split a piece of paper in four to record all of the items you have found made of each.

Writing our Diary entry. Remind yourself of what you found in your Diary entries on Tuesday last week. What did they include? You need to remember all of those things as well. Speak to your child about how we need to remember ‘Dear Diary’ at the start, we need to write the date, and we need to remember to use the first person.

Discuss with your children what they might write an remind them that they need to pretend to be the Ugly Duckling today.

Please allow your child to do this on their own as this will show exactly where they are with their writing.

For today we will be focusing on properties of materials. In particular, we are going to test the bendiness of various materials.

Have a selection of items and record the names these (item first, not material) in the left column of your table. Now, think about what material this item is made from. Record this in the next column.

Now it’s time to test, be careful and don’t bend too aggressively as we don’t want to break anything! Gently hold the item in both of your hands and see if you can bend it. I want you to write one word in the following column, is it ‘very’ bendy, ‘slightly’ bendy or ‘not’ bendy.

Continue for all items and discuss with your family what items were the most bendy which were the least bendy? Why do you think the items that are bendy are bendy? What is the purpose of the item? Would it still work if it was rigid?

Worksheet: Science investigating bendiness

Have fun investigating!

Enjoy your day, I hope to see your work.
