Our story of the week this week is still in keeping with our plants and growth theme, it’s ‘The Enormous Turnip’ please watch the story video below, although if you have the book at home please read that together instead.

This story is all about collaboration and working together, helping each other and at the end sharing out what they achieved.

It also helps us learn different words for the word BIG! (Huge, Enormous gigantic, large) How many different words for BIG do they use in this story??

Can you answer these questions?

  • What did the old man plant in his garden?
  • Why did the old man need help?
  • Do you like Turnips? Have you ever tried one?
  • Can you remember how many people and animals helped to pull the turnip out of the ground?

Our Maths focus today alongside our morning routine is looking at size terminology. BIG/LARGE or little/small, you can either use the size ordering story character sheets below or use real vegetables or you could even use your own little people and animals.

Please can you try and group them into either small-medium-large, also talk about the characters from the story, is the dog bigger or smaller than the cat?? if you put the dog, cat and mouse in a line which one is big which one is medium and which one is small??

t-tp-5698-the-enormous-turnip-small-world-characters-english

This week we are still continuing with looking at the number 4, can you recognise the number in a number line without being told? Can you write the number 4 either on paper, in mud or sand or even make the sign in the air?

Lets now have a look at the NUMBERJACKS can you see the number 4??

This afternoon I would like you to draw a picture from the story. Think about what colours you will use? What characters will you put in your picture??

Please remember to send all your hard work to me at admin@shawburystmarys.co.uk
