Squirrels Home Learning Monday 16th November 2020

Good morning Squirrels Class,

I hope you are all well and staying safe! I am going to miss seeing you every day in school but look forward to Thursday 26th when we can get back to normal.

To support home school learning over the next two weeks, I will be posting activity ideas on the website each morning so please keep a look out. I will not be collecting anything in once we return, however I would love to see what you have been up to during self-isolation and the work that you complete. Please send any work attachments or photos to 3134Squirrels@shawburystmarys.co.uk I look forward to your emails!

Each day there will be a Maths and English activity and one other subject e.g. Science, History, Art, etc. For Maths work I will be using White Rose Maths which we use in class and for English I will be using a range of different resources including those from National Oak Academy, Twinkl and BBC Bitesize.

Phonics:

In phonics we have been recapping Set 1 sounds at a speedy rate to ensure there are no gaps in the children’s learning. We are now due to move onto Set 2 sounds in class. I have found some YouTube videos which helps you to see how the sounds are taught in class.

Starting with special friends ‘ay’.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sAGOvIJWjc

Maths:

We have begun to look at 2D and 3D shapes in Squirrels class this week.

Year 2 children I would like you to have a look at money for your home learning.

Please watch this video clip and then complete the worksheet below. This does not need printing if you do not have access to a printer, it can just be completed on a blank piece of paper.

I would love to see your plot matrix so please don’t forget to email me your work!

Science:

Our Science topic is Seasonal Changes – In this lesson, we are going to be learning about the four seasons and the weather. We are going to learn what a scientist is and how important they are. We are going to complete an observation of the weather outside of our windows and compare this to the four seasons. Lastly, we will be identifying the different weather in the four seasons. You will need a piece of paper and a pencil for this lesson.

Homework, Reading and spellings

We have had a great first half term in Squirrels class! The children have settled in well and are making me proud with how well they are doing in class. We had a treat afternoon today watching the film ‘Lost and Found’ and eating some popcorn.

Reading: The children that handed in their books and records today have had new ones to read over the half term. These will be changed on Monday 2nd November 2020 – please ensure books and records are handed in first thing in the morning so they can be swapped before home time. We will then ask for them back as usual (handed in Friday, left over the weekend and returned on Monday).

Spellings: The children have been given their green homework files containing their spelling list for this week.

Year 1: If the v sound is at the beginning or in the middle of a word, it is usually spelt with a ‘v’. The v phoneme is usually spelt with ‘ve’ at the end of a word.

Year 2: Common exception words (tricky words) – A mnemonic is a way to help remember a tricky spelling. It could be a saying that uses each letter in the word such as… because. Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants.

Homework: I have given the children Maths and Literacy to complete over the half term.

Maths: Year 1: Number bonds

Year 2: Addition and Subtraction to 100

Literacy: I’d like the children to write sentences about the pictures they see on their page.

When writing, please encourage your child to include:

  • Capital letters and full stops
  • Finger spaces
  • Writing on the line
  • Correct letter formation
  • Adjectives (WOW words/describing words)
  • Beautiful presentation – we have been learning how to present our work neatly. If we make a mistake we put one neat line through it (no scribbling) and write the correction next to it (we don’t encourage rubbing out).

Homework files are due back in on Friday 6th November 2020.

Have a fantastic half term! See you all soon!

Mrs Edwards 🙂

Homework and Reading

Reading: Just a reminder that reading books and diaries need to be handed in on a Friday. This is so I can leave them over the weekend for 72 hours before transferring between households. New books will be given out on a Monday which will link with our new book that we share in guided reading for the week. The guided reading books have the same sounds that the children will find in their book bag books and helps with continuity of learning between school and home.

Spellings: The children have been given their green homework files containing their spelling list for this week.

Year 1: The sound spelt n before g ‘ng’. The sound spelt n before k ‘nk’.

Year 2: The sound /j/ spelt with ‘-dge’ and ‘-ge’ at the end of words.

Homework: This week I’d like the children to look at the autumn picture on the page and answer the questions:

  1. What is the boy under the tree doing? How do you think he is feeling?
  2. What do you think the girl is saying to the boy?
  3. What game do you think the boy and girl are playing? Who do you think will win?
  4. Have you ever been to the woods before? Write what it was like, or what you imagine it would be like.

When writing, please encourage your child to write in full sentences e.g. I think he will be feeling…, I think the girl will say…, etc. avoiding one word answers.

Remember to include:

  • Capital letters and full stops
  • Finger spaces
  • Writing on the line
  • Correct letter formation
  • Adjectives (WOW words/describing words)
  • Beautiful presentation – we have been learning how to present our work neatly. If we make a mistake we put one neat line through it (no scribbling) and write the correction next to it (we don’t encourage rubbing out).

I have also included a word search on the back as I know some children really enjoy doing these. This is not essential but intended as an extra fun activity if your child wishes to complete it.

Homework files are due back in on Wednesday 21st October 2020 – I’m sorry this is a day earlier than usual but I would like to give out holiday homework for October half term.

At the beginning of the school year, the children and I discussed a fun afternoon (last day of term) they could earn if they had 3000 Dojo points. Dojo points are given out in class for a range of different reasons e.g. good behaviour, working hard, manners, helping others, etc. We have got over 2000 points so far and I am positive they will achieve this by Thursday PM. As a treat they have decided they would like to watch a film and have popcorn/sweets.

Have a great weekend!

Mrs Edwards

Reading, Homework and Spellings

We have had a lovely week in Squirrels! The children continue to make me proud with how they have adapted to new school routines and they all come in so happy and independent each morning!

Thank you to everyone for a lovely day on Wednesday. It was great to talk about the children and catch up with their progress.

Reading: New books have come home this week and need to be returned on Monday. These are linked to the assessment carried out this week. The children were asked to read aloud the sounds they recognised and these correlate with the book bag books. These will be assessed regularly to ensure the children are on the correct colour and continuing to make progress.

Spellings: The children have been given their green homework files containing their spelling list for this week.

Year 1: Adding the endings -ing, -ed and -er to verbs where no change is needed to the root words.

Year 2: The sound /s/ spelt ‘c’ before e, i and y.

Homework: As discussed on the parent phone calls, I’d really like to push the children’s Literacy skills in class. So this week I have sent home a piece of writing homework and will continue with writing homework for the foreseeable. I’d like them to write descriptive sentences about the monster on their page using skills we have been recapping in class.

When writing, please remember to include:

  • Capital letters and full stops
  • Finger spaces
  • Writing on the line
  • Correct letter formation
  • Adjectives (WOW words/describing words)
  • Beautiful presentation – we have been learning how to present our work neatly. If we make a mistake we put one neat line through it (no scribbling) and write the correction next to it (we don’t encourage rubbing out).

Homework files are due back in on Thursday 15th October 2020.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Mrs Edwards

Spellings and Reading

Thank you for the homework files back this week. If your child has not brought their file back please could you place the spelling sheet (Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check!) into the file when they get home?

Spelling rules this week are:

Year 1: The sounds /l/ and /k/, /z/ spelt ‘ll’, ‘zz’ and ‘ck’. Examples of these are: well, pull, full, wall, buzz, fizz, back, stick, flick, pal

Year 2: The sounds /r/ spelt ‘wr’ at the beginning of words. Examples of these are: write, written, wrote, wrong, wrap, wrist, wreck, wrestle, wriggle, wren

Homework this week is to practise your spellings and carry on reading, additional homework will be sent out every other week e.g. Maths or Literacy.

This week we have launched ‘Reading Rockets’ our new initiative to encourage our children to read as often as possible at home and at school. Reading regularly for 20 minutes or more will help develop our children’s reading stamina and fluency, and most importantly helps to develop a love of reading. The children have to have 3 signatures in their diary each week to earn a tick on the class chart. After 10 ticks the children earn their bronze award, 20 ticks a silver award and 30 ticks their gold award.

Please support us to encourage reading by reading as often as possible with your child at home and encouraging them to read independently. Information regarding our new Read Write Inc scheme will be given out later next week.

Green homework files are due back on Thursday 8th October 2020.

Have a great weekend!

Mrs Edwards

Squirrels Update, Homework and Spellings

We have had another fantastic week in Squirrels class!

Literacy: This week we have changed our story focus from The Wonder by Faye Hansen to Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. The children have enjoyed becoming familiar with the text by listening to the story, watching an animated version on the interactive whiteboard, role playing the story with a partner and sequencing the main events into their Literacy books.

Maths: We have been learning how to represent numbers to 10 and 20 using equipment e.g. Numicon, Base 10, cubes, bead strings, etc and how to compare amounts using the mathematical language ‘more/greater than’, ‘less than’ and ‘equal to’ and been introduced to the signs < > =.

Science: We have continued our Science topic ‘Seasonal changes’ and had a lovely lesson on Tuesday afternoon, thinking about Autumn and the changes we are starting to see around us for example, leaves changing colour, frosty mornings, etc.

PE: This week we had a very wet Wednesday afternoon, so to avoid any slips or falls on the playground we had an impromptu art lesson. The children had lots of fun with the poster paints and created some beautiful Autumnal pieces of artwork to link to our Science topic.

RE: Our Christianity focus for RE is; God – What do Christians believe God is like? We have listened to the story of The Lost Son; role played the story and discussed what forgiveness means.

Reading: Thank you for being so understanding with the reading books being changed once a week. We will continue the process of books and records being returned on a Friday morning and new books given out on a Monday afternoon. We are very excited that yesterday our new Read Write Inc books arrived and finger crossed we can get these out to you ASAP, as soon as we have sorted through them properly.

Spellings: Please find in your child’s homework file a list of spellings for this half term.

Every Friday morning, we will be spending time in class learning that week’s spelling rule and practising a few examples from the list. These spellings will then go on our class website for your child to practise over the weekend, using a look, cover, write, check template.

There will be no test, but spellings learnt will be evident in your child’s writing and will really help their progress as writers. I will not be marking their look, cover, write checks but will continue to mark their other pieces of homework.

Spelling rules this week are:

Year 1: The sounds /f/ and /s/, spelt ‘ff’ and ‘ss’.

Year 2: The sounds /n/ spelt ‘kn’ and less often ‘gn’ at the beginning of words.

Homework: Thank you to everyone who handed in their Maths homework last week. If your child did not hand in their green homework file, please could you transfer this week’s homework and other resources I have sent home to their green file?

Homework this week will be a continuation from the last piece of Maths homework – this time focussing on numbers to 20!

Green homework files are due back on Thursday 1st October 2020.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Mrs Edwards
