Read Write Inc Books

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are very excited in KS1 that our new Read Write Inc books have arrived in school. We are spending this week/beginning of next week organising them all and getting them recorded properly and will get these out to the children next week.
Thank you so much for your patience while we transfer over to the new program.
Kind regards

Mrs Edwards

Squirrels Update, Homework and Spellings

We have had another fantastic week in Squirrels class!

Literacy: This week we have changed our story focus from The Wonder by Faye Hansen to Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. The children have enjoyed becoming familiar with the text by listening to the story, watching an animated version on the interactive whiteboard, role playing the story with a partner and sequencing the main events into their Literacy books.

Maths: We have been learning how to represent numbers to 10 and 20 using equipment e.g. Numicon, Base 10, cubes, bead strings, etc and how to compare amounts using the mathematical language ‘more/greater than’, ‘less than’ and ‘equal to’ and been introduced to the signs < > =.

Science: We have continued our Science topic ‘Seasonal changes’ and had a lovely lesson on Tuesday afternoon, thinking about Autumn and the changes we are starting to see around us for example, leaves changing colour, frosty mornings, etc.

PE: This week we had a very wet Wednesday afternoon, so to avoid any slips or falls on the playground we had an impromptu art lesson. The children had lots of fun with the poster paints and created some beautiful Autumnal pieces of artwork to link to our Science topic.

RE: Our Christianity focus for RE is; God – What do Christians believe God is like? We have listened to the story of The Lost Son; role played the story and discussed what forgiveness means.

Reading: Thank you for being so understanding with the reading books being changed once a week. We will continue the process of books and records being returned on a Friday morning and new books given out on a Monday afternoon. We are very excited that yesterday our new Read Write Inc books arrived and finger crossed we can get these out to you ASAP, as soon as we have sorted through them properly.

Spellings: Please find in your child’s homework file a list of spellings for this half term.

Every Friday morning, we will be spending time in class learning that week’s spelling rule and practising a few examples from the list. These spellings will then go on our class website for your child to practise over the weekend, using a look, cover, write, check template.

There will be no test, but spellings learnt will be evident in your child’s writing and will really help their progress as writers. I will not be marking their look, cover, write checks but will continue to mark their other pieces of homework.

Spelling rules this week are:

Year 1: The sounds /f/ and /s/, spelt ‘ff’ and ‘ss’.

Year 2: The sounds /n/ spelt ‘kn’ and less often ‘gn’ at the beginning of words.

Homework: Thank you to everyone who handed in their Maths homework last week. If your child did not hand in their green homework file, please could you transfer this week’s homework and other resources I have sent home to their green file?

Homework this week will be a continuation from the last piece of Maths homework – this time focussing on numbers to 20!

Green homework files are due back on Thursday 1st October 2020.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Mrs Edwards

Squirrels Homework

We have had a great first full week in school! The children have been very busy and it has been lovely getting to know all of them individually.

I have sent home their first piece of homework today in a green file. We have been looking at forming our numbers carefully and correctly this week with many children reversing their numbers or not recognising some numerals. This weeks homework focuses on numbers to 9 and has a few little fun activities to complete at the end of each page. This is to be kept at home and completed by Friday 18th September. Please return this on Friday 18th in the morning. There will be a separate basket alongside their reading book basket, allowing me time to leave the homework files over the weekend for 72 hours before marking.

Thank you for returning their books and records this morning. We will have a look through these on Monday and make changes according to your notes. The children will be leaving school on Monday evening with a new reading back.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Edwards

Welcome to Squirrels Class!

A huge well done for completing your first week in Squirrels class! I am very impressed with how well the children have settled into our new routine and look forward to getting to know you all in the next few weeks. It is very different this year with the children having to stay seated and being taught from their tables instead of the carpet area, however they have shown just how resilient and independent they are and have made me very proud for their first three days in school! I will be moving children around until I get to know them better and have them seated in the best places for each individual (tables and chairs will be cleaned each evening so this is a perfect opportunity).

The children will be given their reading book and record on Monday. Please allow a few weeks for us to hear all of the children read and get to know the level they’re at, their reading colour/stage may change as we hear them and decide which suits them best. We encourage all children to read regularly at home and ask that an adult writes a written comment about how they’ve managed after they have read. There will be a basket outside the classroom each Friday for you to place your child’s reading book and record. We will leave these 72 hours over the weekend and give new books out on a Monday.  Please see more information on the Squirrels Class Information Page.

Squirrel’s class need to come to school every Wednesday in their PE kits and do not need to bring uniform to change back into as they can stay in this all day. Again please see more information on the class information page.

Each Monday I will post about the Phonics sounds the children will be focussing on and a few words they may come across that week to practise spelling at home. We do not test the children on these spellings but it will help them to recognise our sounds within their Literacy work. Signing up to Squirrels class email notifications will help flag these up to you and any additional posts I make.

The children have been coming into class independently each morning and settling down straight away, well done Squirrels! Thank you to everyone for following the social distancing guidelines outside Squirrels Class. Just a little reminder that Squirrels class will only be open earlier than 9am for siblings and our finishing time is 3:20pm. Please follow the markings outside the classroom and keep the chevron area outside the classroom door free, this helps me send children out quicker and from a distance. Thank you for being so patient with me whilst I learn names and faces. It is usually a lot easier with the children being able to help point parents/carers out but for now they are being fantastic and staying in their seats. I will get there, I promise!

If you have any questions at all please come and see me at the end of the day at the classroom door!

Best Wishes

Mrs Edwards

Dear Parents/Carers,

As we sent out written reports to you at Easter, and the majority of the children have not been in school since, we will not be sending out written reports at the end of the year.

Instead we would like to offer you a ten minute phone call with your child’s teacher. You will be given either a morning or afternoon slot for your call. Please see schedule below.

If you do not wish to receive a phone call please let the school know as soon as possible and we will take you off the list.  The teacher will call the mobile telephone number registered to the first contact on your child’s file. If you would prefer us to call a different person or number please let us know as soon as possible.

Mrs Edwards – Thursday 9th July

If your child’s surname begins with A-H you will receive a morning call.

If your child’s surname begins with I – W you will receive an afternoon call.
