Home Learning- Literacy and reading – Wb 18/1/21

Yellow Pencil Clipart Free PNG Image|IllustoonLiteracy: We have now finished our mini topic that was based on the book ‘You Choose’. This week in Literacy (at home), the children will be starting with a Roman research task and will then choose 1 ‘Literacy and communication’ task to complete each day this week from their new  ROMAN ACTIVITY GRID (Please click the link to view/print grid)

The Literacy and communication tasks on the grid are based on our new topic ‘The Remarkable Romans’. Normally, the children would have started their topic at the very beginning of term so by this point would know a little bit about the Romans already. As that wasn’t possible this year, Monday’s Literacy lesson this week will be a research task to gather useful information.

Please see this week’s Foundation/Science home learning post to see how else you can use the activity grid for home learning.

MondayLearning objective: To research and gather information from non-fiction texts (The children may need reminding that non-fiction texts provide information, they are ‘not false’)

Task

  • Pick 3 questions that you would like to find out about the Romans – perhaps questions like: ‘How did the Romans begin?’, ‘When/Where did the Romans begin?’  ‘Who or what did Romans believe in?’, What were Roman soldiers and battles like?. Write your chosen questions down – you can use this template if you would like to. My_Powerful_Questions[1]
  • Then, read the information here –The_Romans_Fact_File[1]  or  use the internet/books to try and find out the answers to your questions. You can write down your answers or any information that you find interesting on this Research map The_Romans_Map[1].

Tuesday – Wednesday – Thursday – Please choose 1 Literacy and communication task per day from the ROMAN ACTIVITY GRID.

Friday- Friday’s lessons every week will be for Free writing (children’s choice of how and what to write about) –  They could write a poem, story, recipe, list, diary etc

Spellings – If you would like to continue with spelling practice at home, I will attach our spelling words – Year 3 Term 2A Spelling Overview for this term.

Free Book Cliparts, Download Free Clip Art, Free Clip Art on Clipart LibraryReading I would encourage the children to continue reading as much as they can while they are at home (however I understand it may be a little more difficult at the moment). I posted a reading challenge on Friday for the children to complete over the next few weeks if they would like to, I thought it might give them a bit of motivation to continue reading 🙂 I have also attached some useful comprehension questions for adults to ask their child/children as they read to develop their understandingReading questions

Again, please send any work that the children complete or if you have any questions, please email Class3@shawburystmarys.co.uk

Thank you, Miss Taylor

Home learning – Foundation subjects and Science – Wb 18/1/21

Like last term, I have created a grid of activities that link to our Spring topic (The Remarkable Romans). The children can choose tasks from the grid (as little or often as they would like) to complete alongside their daily home learning lessons (Maths/Literacy/Foundation/Science)– The tasks on this grid are ‘optional extras’ for the children to do while they are at home, as normally I would be sending this grid home as homework. Here is the link to the ROMAN ACTIVITY GRID

As well as the Roman activity grid, I will still continue to post foundation subject and Science lessons for the children to choose from during the week.  At school, we would normally do Maths and Literacy in the morning and then a foundation subject or Science in the afternoon.Free Toddlers Exercising Cliparts, Download Free Clip Art, Free Clip Art on Clipart LibraryPE : Joe Wicks will be doing new online PE lessons again during this ‘lockdown’ that will be available on his Youtube channel –  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ The children can join in with these daily or weekly.

Science | Brierley Hill Primary SchoolScience : At the end of last term, Class 3 had just begun a Science topic that focussed on animal’s (inc humans) diets and nutritional needs.  Science home learning tasks will be linked as best as possible to the curriculum units that would be being taught at school, as well as recapping on the children’s prior knowledge and previous learning.

The link below will take you to the next online Science lesson called ‘How do we classify the diets of animals?’ The children had just begun to learn about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores last term so they may remember this vocabulary and what they mean. This lesson includes a quiz to start, a teaching video with tasks (you can download and print the worksheets) and a quiz to finish. https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/how-do-we-classify-the-diets-of-animals-6rup2c

Be Happy Clipart Text stock illustration. Illustration of text - 43718898PSHE: Our PSHE topic at school would be a unit called ‘Money Matters’, it explores the ‘world of work’, discusses roles and responsibilities of children and the people around them and introduces the  children to why and how money is used in the world.

Task- This week, I would like the children to ‘interview’ an adult or older sibling in their home about their current job or dream job. Encourage the children to write a list of questions down that they would like to ask first of all and to think carefully about what they would like to know about the ‘world of work’ before the interview. Perhaps they could ask ‘why did you want to become a_______?’ or ‘what qualifications did you need to get your job?’, ‘what tools or equipment do you need?’. The children can write down the answers that they get from the interview and could perhaps compare it to what they thought the answers might be. Remind the children that paid jobs provide an earning for people, unlike chores around the home, but unfortunately, household tasks still need to be done!

Geography: – The focus for Geography for the next few weeks you are at home will be ‘Mountains, Volcanoes and Earthquakes’. There is a teaching video and one or more activities for each lesson.

Task – This week’s lesson is called ‘How are volcanoes made?’ (some of the children that have been coming to school may have done this lesson in school already) here is the online link to this lessonhttps://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/how-are-volcanoes-made-71h3cd There is a quick quiz at the start of the lesson to check what the children have remembered from last week, then the new learning video and activities for the children to have a go at.

I would love to see what the children create, please send any work to Class3@shawburystmarys.co.uk.

Thank you, Miss Taylor

Friday 15th Homework

Happy Friday everyone 🙂

Due to the children being unable to swap and change their reading books due to the current circumstances. I am going to be setting a reading comprehension task as the homework each week. The text will just be short and then the children will have to answer a few questions about the piece of text they have read.

The activity is differentiated dependent on the reading level of your child. To check your child’s reading level, have a look at their book bag book and see what colour it is.

If you children brings home blue books, this is the activity.

Blue Group Reading Homework

If your child brings home pink or purple, this is the activity:

All homework is too be emailed or handed in on Thursday 21st January. If your child will be in school that day they can hand it in too me, if not please email ladybirds@shawburystmarys.co.uk.

Thank you so much!

Happy reading 🙂

Miss Shadbolt.

Friday 15th January

Happy Friday everyone!

I hope you have all had a lovely week and are looking forward to your weekend 🙂 . I have loved seeing all your work again this week, you all seem to be loving the Science, Geography and RE – which is fab!

Phonics –

Today the phonics sound is /or/ ‘shut the door’. Please see the video link attached. Remember we don’t form our letters this way though. We also often play phonics bingo in class on Friday, the children draw a 6 box bingo grid, fill each box with a sound and then I say the sounds, when they have got them all they shout BINGO!!!! – this is a fun little activity and the children really enjoy it. Please give it a go with your child if you would like (they’ll show you the ropes 🙂 ).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEDgI2bJQKs

On a Friday in class we do handwriting and spelling, so I am going to be setting those sessions on a Friday morning instead of another Literacy lesson.

Handwriting – the sheet below is this weeks letter formation, it is all about accurately joining the letters ‘er’ together.

er handwriting sheet

Spelling this week are a mixture of the phonics sounds you have been doing and the months of the year. If you do not have a printer to access the Look Say Cover Write Check sheet, the spellings are as follows:

spoon

pool

look

book

blow

know

bright

might

light

January

February

March

April

If you have access to a printer, please see the attached spelling sheet.

Maths – making doubles

Please watch the video below and then complete the worksheet. Again, if you do not have access to a printer please just complete the answers on a blank piece of paper.

The sheet from White Rose is very pictorial/visual and will be good for all of the children. However, I have also linked a range of sheets that are varied in difficulty if your child wants a challenge (Primary Stars).

PSHE

This term our topic is all about feelings, both good and bad and what we then do with those feelings. Look at the mood monster presentation below. Then on a blank piece of paper draw a mood monster to represent how you are feeling today. Once you have drawn and coloured in your monster, write down all the words you can think of that are linked to the way you feel. For example, if you draw a happy monster you might write down smiles, cheerful, delighted, safe etc.

Meet the mood monsters

The sheet below is a template of a feelings monster if you are not sure how to draw one – but you are all very imaginative and I am sure you will find this task lots of fun!

We will also be having some Golden Time in class today, so take some time to relax, watch a film or play a game! Just have some time for you 🙂 !!

Have a lovely weekend Ladybirds, I can’t wait to see you all!

Keep safe, keep smiling 🙂

Thursday 14th January 2021

Good morning everyone! How are you all today?

It looked like you had great fun looking at how food had changed over time yesterday and I had lots of photos of you all doing PE or Cosmic Kids – great job guys!

Phonics

Today the phonics sound is /ar/ ‘start the car’ – I know this is a sound that we know but we need to keep practising to make sure we apply the sound knowledge in our writing. Please click on the link below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vAAxD-53q0

I had a few emails to say that on Tuesday the email link did not work for /oo/ ‘poo at the zoo’ – I am very sorry! Please see the attached link below for the missed sound. I know it says it is for reception class but we are just recapping.

Literacy

I have been so impressed with your work on instructions this week, you have shown a real understanding and are very much ready to move on to the new topic next week! The last job you have to do this week, to test your skills, is to see if you can create a set of instructions using only some pictures to help you. On the sheet below, there are some numbered pictures that you need to try and write an instruction for. The sheet has the time connectives to help you but don’t forget the bossy verbs and the list of equipment you will need to complete the task 🙂 .

Thursday Literacy Sheet

If you do not have access to a printer, please see the attached lesson from Oak Academy. You will have to try and write a set of instructions from memory. All you will need to complete this task is a pencil and a piece of paper.

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-tell-a-set-of-instructions-from-memory-c5hkar

Maths – Use arrays

We have looked at arrays in class before so the children should be great at the home learning today. If you do not have access to a printer, please just use a blank piece of paper to complete the task. Sometimes using resources helps with creating arrays.

Thursday Maths Sheet Arrays

If the above sheet is too tricky, please see the attached sheet which is very visual and may help the children to physically see the arrays.

Different Array Sheet

Science – Changing Materials.

Which material is most stretchy?

Today you will be having a look at the next lesson in the Science sequence. This lesson explores a range of different materials and looks at how and why they are stretchy and which one has the most stretch.

Before you start, have a think and make a prediction about which material you think is going to stretch the most? Will it be plastic, glass, cotton, wool, elastic? Have a guess and write your predictions on the top of your sheet so I can see what you all thought before the lesson. Then, at the end, see if you were right 🙂 .

Have a fab day!

See you all soon!

Keep smiling 🙂

Best wishes, Miss Shadbolt.

Tuesday 12th January Home Learning

Good morning, how are you all today?

I enjoyed seeing all of your home learning emails yesterday, you are working so hard and I can see you are really trying your best. Well done Ladybirds, I am so proud of you.

Phonics: Today the sound is /oo/ ‘poo at the zoo’. I know that some of the children are familiar with this sound but many still need to recap.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6OrflVcdJM

Extra activity – here is the /oo/ sound to be used to support with spelling words containing this sound.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pI6gWURXcSw

Literacy – Writing a set of instructions.

Today’s task is to write a set of instructions to bake a cake, you MUST include all of the features that you looked at yesterday. Once you have written the set of instructions, draw me a picture of the kind of cake your instructions are for. Is it a cupcake? A birthday cake?

If you did the imperative verb sheet yesterday, please try and include those bossy verbs in to your writing – they are very important in the creation of a set of very good instructions and a very good cake! 🙂

Maths – Using the multiplication symbol (X).

Watch the Maths video and complete the sheet below. We have not looked at the multiplication symbol in Ladybird class since Autumn term so the children may need some support with this lesson. Please do not feel like you have to print the sheets out everyday.

https://vimeo.com/488111269

Tuesday Maths – X symbol

Mindfulness – After lunch everyday, we participate in mindfulness or meditation. Today is ‘Thoughtful Tuesday’. Look at the link below and join in!

Thoughtful-Tuesday

RE – We are starting a to explore a different religion this half term, we are looking at Hinduism. Today we made a display in school all about Hinduism and we wanted to share it with all of the Ladybirds working hard at home.

Today we are looking at symbolism and what symbols Hindus use. We are then going to look at symbols that are familiar to us and explore why it is important to feel like you belong to somewhere, like school, a football team or a religion.

Click through the presentation below and then complete the worksheet. Do you know the 4 symbols? What do they represent? After that, using a blank piece of paper, create a logo/symbol that could represent Ladybird class.

Hindu Symbolism PowerPoint

RE Symbols Tuesday

I look forward to seeing all of the symbols you create to represent Ladybird class.

Keep safe, keep happy and keep smiling.

Best wishes, Miss Shadbolt.

Under the Sea

This afternoon in Ladybird class, we recycled some old CD’s (science topic) and then followed a set of instructions (literacy topic) to create some very sparkly, shiny and lovely hanging Angel Fish. We had great fun completing this task and the children from the key worker bubble really wanted to show their friends the fish display.

Home learning – Literacy and Reading – Wb 11/1/21

Literacy: We are continuing with the book ‘You choose’ for our Literacy focus this week- This is the link to the video reading of ‘You choose’  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKf_zyJGkzo.

MondayLearning objective: to write a poem based on transportToday’s Literacy task is based on the page- ‘Would you travel with wheels or wings? Or perhaps choose one these other things?  Discuss with your child/children which mode of transport they would choose to travel in/on and why they would choose it. Ask the children what do they notice about the language used in the question? (rhyming – wings and things).

Taskto write a poem about ‘transport’. They can choose 1 or more methods of transport and they can choose what style of poem to do. I will attach some examples below. Remind the children to use powerful vocabulary in whatever poem type they choose as poems are ways to express feelings, ideas and imagination by carefully chosen vocabulary. The children are familiar with shape poems, acrostic poems and have had a go with some rhyming. Here are some examples – Transport poem examples

Tuesday – Page -‘When you got hungry, what would you eat?’ Discuss with your child/children what you would eat and why and then they can share what they would choose and why. There are two tasks for today’s lesson that the children can choose from.

  1. Create your ‘perfect’ menu from the foods shown on this page – what would your starter be? Your dessert? Here is a Menu template
  2. Write a recipe for something that you would like to make, perhaps you could have a go at following the recipe too, remember to use the features of instruction writing that you were using last term : Features of instruction writing

There are a few pages from the book, in between Tuesday and Wednesday’s lessons that I have not linked any tasks to, although I am sure that the children would still like to discuss their choices for these pages by listening to the online version.

Wednesday- Page ‘Is there a job you’d like to do?’ – Learning objective: To write about my goals for the future in future tense  – Discuss with your child/children the range of jobs on the page and talk about what the role might be of the person with that job. Remind the children that there are so many different jobs and people have different career hopes and dreams to each other. Ask your child/children which job they would like and why.

Task – I would like the children to write about their hopes and dreams for the future, including what job they might quite like to do (it doesn’t have to be one from the book). They need to use first person pronouns ( I, me, mine, myself) and future tense (I will, I would like to). They could draw of picture of themselves doing their dream job and label it with sentences about their hopes and dreams, or they could write in paragraphs.

Thursday – Page -‘What would you do for fun?’ – Learning objective: To write a diary entry – discuss this page with your child/children and what activities they like to do, perhaps something they enjoyed doing at home during the first ‘lockdown’ or something that they are looking forward to doing after ‘lockdown’?.

Task– Today’s task is to write a diary entry of the activities/things they got up to yesterday, or any other days this week. If the children find it hard to remember, they could write about an imaginary day that they had instead, using one or more activities from the page in the book to give them a focus for their diary entry. The children haven’t written diaries in school yet, so it would be useful to show them the video of author Michael Rosen talking about recounts and diary entries – https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z4qtqfr.

Their writing needs to be in first person as the entry is about what they have got up to and they will be writing in past tense today, making sure the correct suffixes are used on the end of verbs (-d and -ed, walked, smiled, worked).

Friday- Friday’s lessons will be for Free writing (children’s choice of how and what to write about) – if the children would like a focus for free writing, they could write a story today that includes their choices that they have made as they have gone through the ‘You choose’ book. For example, their story could be based in the setting they chose on day 1, their characters chosen from the family and friends page, perhaps the story involves a journey somewhere or includes a fantasy creature.

Spellings – If you would like to continue with spelling practice at home, I will attach our spelling words – Year 3 Term 2A Spelling Overview for this term.

Reading I would encourage the children to continue reading as much as they can while they are at home (however I understand it may be a little more difficult at the moment).

Spring Term Week 1

Happy Friday!

I hope you have all had a lovely week, I have been so impressed with the amount of emails I have been receiving everyday and just want to say how proud I am of each and every one of you. I know it can be tricky but keep up the hard work.

In class we have made the most of the frosty and snowy weather and have spent lots of time outside, have you? On Thursday, we went for a frosty walk and it was lovely! We discovered cobwebs that were frozen, leaves and plants that were frosty and we even found some thick ice down in Forest School. Please click the link below to see the pictures.

Frosty Walk Pictures for Ladybirds

If your child is in school, our new PE day is a Tuesday. Please send your child into school in their PE kit, with a warm jumper/hoodie and a coat. PE (weather dependent) will be outside.

We have also received a notice regarding the fruit deliveries, these have been suspended until school fully reopens. Can you please send a healthy snack in with your child for break time – thank you very much.

Thank you for your support in these challenging times and hopefully we will be back together as soon as possible!

Stay happy, stay safe and stay smiling 🙂

Best wishes, Miss Shadbolt.
