Home learning information

I would like to wish a happy new year to all the parents/carers and children in Class 3 and hope that the children bring their wonderful, positive attitudes with them into 2021.
As a result of the partial school closure, home learning will be set up for the children to access during their time at home.
Each week, I will be posting daily Maths and Literacy tasks and weekly activities from a selection of other subjects (Science, Art, Computing for example). I will post the Maths home learning on a separate post as there are lots of resources to upload for each week and can be a little overwhelming if it is all uploaded together. This week’s tasks will be uploaded before midday tomorrow, then the tasks for any following weeks will be uploaded on Monday mornings by 9am.

As we are unsure of when all children will be returning to school, rather than starting our new Spring topic which would have been the Romans, Class 3 will be completing a ‘mini topic’ based around a book called ‘You Choose’ by Nick Sharratt and Pippa Goodhart. Here is a link to an online reading of this book that would be nice to for the children to listen to/watch before they complete any tasks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKf_zyJGkzo

I will upload lessons including any relevant worksheets, information, websites and videos required to support you and the children with their home learning . I understand the difficulties that revolve around teaching/learning in a home environment so I just ask that the children try their best and have a go at as many of the tasks that I have set.
There are some great home learning resources available online for additional support or activities. https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio has a range of audio stories and activities for children, https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/this-terms-topics is useful for a variety of subjects, Joe Wickes’ workouts are still available to watch and https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/ is still continuing to provide tasks and information to help with home learning.

The children can use their red homework books that I sent home last term to complete the work in, or they can work straight onto worksheets or paper. If you have any questions or would like to send me any work that the children have completed, then please send them to our Class 3 email – 3134Class3@shawburystmarys.co.uk.

I look forward to seeing what the children complete at home 🙂

Take care, Miss Taylor

Week 6

We can’t believe it is almost Christmas! We have had a lovely week so far!

Maths – The children have enjoyed looking at 4 sided shapes as well as 1 more and 1 less (quite tricky)!

English – in English this week we have been finishing off our letters to Santa and beginning to make something lovely your all of you!

Phonics – In phonics we have been learning about our special friends:

SH (SH! said the horse to the hissing snake)

TH (the princess in the tower was rescued by the horse)

CH (the horse sneezes when the caterpillar gets up his nose!)

On Wednesday we had our wonderful Christmas Lunch, where the children were able to wear their lovely party hats that they made last week!

Such a wonderful week full of Christmas cheer!

Wednesday 9th December 2020 Home Learning

Good morning :),

I had a lovely surprise this morning, I opened my parcel to find.. SPARKY!! He has been delivered back to us, he says he can’t wait to see you all next week and he has missed you. He also asks if you are all safe and well :).

Again, thank you for the pictures of the work that you got up to yesterday. There were some lovely letters and you had all remembered the key features. I also really liked your Christmas Story maps.

Today the activities are as follows:

Phonics today is ‘ue’ (come to the rescue).

Maths – Find the Difference (Money)

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/week-11-measurement-money/

Please watch the video labelled “Find the Difference” and then complete the sheet below. Again, if you do not have access to a printer, please just complete on a blank piece of paper. Remember to use the £ and pence symbols when showing your workings out.

Wednesday Maths HL

Literacy

Below is a picture of Edgar’s home, the beautiful Engerish Mountains. Today, I would like you to look at this picture and describe what you can see. Your setting description must contain lots of exciting adjectives and maybe even relate to the senses. Think about the following:

I can see

I can hear

I can smell

I can touch

We have done these in class, so I know you will be fabulous at this task. Just remember to use adjectives that match the picture. Here are a few words to help you out.

Icy, snowy, cold, frosty, sparkly, freezing, glistening, twinkle, white, crisp, fresh etc.

**hint hint** you may need this to help you with tomorrows Literacy task :).

Science

We have been looking at the suitability of materials in Science. Santa told Sparky that he is thinking about upgrading his sleigh for Christmas Eve. It needs to be fast, lightweight and carry lots of presents. Can we help him out? On a blank piece of paper, can you design Santa a new sleigh. You must write labels telling us what materials you would use and why you would use them.

If you participate in any other activities over the isolation, please send me some photos. I would love to see what you are all getting up to. I have had some lovely pictures of Christmas decorations and yummy treats that you have been baking!

Have a great day! Stay safe 🙂

See you soon.

Miss Shadbolt 🙂

Squirrels Spellings and Reading

We have had another very busy week in Squirrels class and the children have settled back very quickly after having to self isolate!

A few polite reminders:

Please ensure your child’s reading book with their record is given in every Friday. This is really important as the books being read 3 times a week in school link to the children’s book bag books that also need to be read three times a week at home. School books and book bag books focus on the same sounds which really help to support your children in making progress with their reading. New books are given out every Monday. This week we have been reassessing the children’s reading level and their book colours may change after Christmas.

Green homework files need handing in every Thursday in order to be marked and the new homework and spellings to be filed, ready to be given back out on a Friday for the weekend. I have ordered new homework zipper files to help the children carry their homework and reading books which are due to arrive next week!

Spellings: I have changed spellings slightly to focus on our weekly phonics sounds and to address any spellings we need to work on e.g. days of the week, numbers written as words, common exception words or Months of the year.

This week we have been looking at the sounds igh – “fly high”, ow – ” blow the snow” and oo – “poo at the zoo”. The spelling page is in the green homework file and underneath for you to refer to.

Spelling sheet igh ow oo

Have a good weekend!

The chn complete 1 day of a times table challenge booklet every morning at school, this week they are revisiting booklet 9 from the start of term to see how they have improved. I have attached a copy of this booklet for the chn to complete if they would like to carry on at home.Ultimate Times Table Daily Practice 9 Booklet

Maths: – I have attached the relevant worksheets.
In school, the chn are starting a maths unit based on multiplication and division- for some extra support at home, it may be helpful for the chn to continue practicing the times tables songs that we learn in class. Here is a link to a video version of the song and I have attached the lyrics –Rolling-number-lyrics
Monday- to recognise 2x table multiplication and division number facts – Multiplication and division board game
Tuesday – To recognise multiples of 2, 5 and 10 – Activity sheet and answers
Wednesday- To recognise, add and make equal groups (varied fluency) – the worksheets are differentiated for level of understandingYear-3-Autumn-Block-3-VF-Multiplication-Equal-Groups
Thursday- To recognise, add and sort equal groups – the worksheets are differentiated for level of understanding Year-3-Autumn-Block-3-RPS-Multiplication-Equal-Groups
Friday-Arithmetic test – Y3-Arithmetic-Half-Test-3a

Literacy
We have finished our instruction writing and are now learning about non-chronological reports (information reports that are not in time order). An example of a non-chronological report could be a non-fiction book or a leaflet that focusses on a specific topic. At home, the chn could find an example of a non-chronological report and begin to identify the features of what is included. Then using the list of features, they could begin to plan a report of their own about the Stone Age. What will be their main heading and subheadings be? what information do they need to research to include in each paragraph? I have attached the list of features for a non-chronological report. Features

Science
We are starting a new Science topic – Animals inc humans – focussing on nutrition and skeletons. This week I am finding out what the children already know about this topic and seeing if they have any questions that we could investigate over the next few weeks. I have attached a ‘concept map’. They create individual mindmaps from each mini heading, writing down anything that they think they know or understand about each word. Humans-animals-digestion-skeleton-year-3-concept-map

Topic- The Stone Age
Class 3 are learning more and more about The Stone Age each week, this week we will be exploring evidence from the past. The chn will be completing an activity based on Stone Age artefacts. Here is the activity Artefact page

I will post a Home Learning post like this one onto the website each week for any children that may be self isolating. This is not homework for those who are still attending school, it is just some resources and information for those chn who may need to access learning from home.

Thank you, Miss Taylor.

The chn complete 1 day of a times table challenge booklet every morning at school, this week they are completing booklet 16 (day 1 is today) I have attached a copy of this booklet for the chn to complete if they would like to carry on at home.Ultimate Times Table Daily Practice 16 Booklet

Maths: – I have attached the relevant worksheets.
Our maths objectives for this week are:

Monday- To check and correct last weeks’ Addition and subtraction quiz – there is a link to this on the last Home Learning post. We will be focussing on reading the questions and choosing the correct method to use and correct any mistakes.
Tuesday- LO: To add 2 3-digit numbers – worksheets are differentiated according to level of understanding- Year-3-Autumn-Block-2-VF-Add-two-3-Digit-Numbers-2
Wednesday – To solve missing number questions –Missing number questions
Thursday-LO: To solve missing number puzzles – Addition pyramids
Friday – Arithmetic test and focus on arithmetic practice (with written methods) Y3-Arithmetic-Half-Test-2b

Literacy
Last week in school, the children planned their own instructions of ‘How to wash a woolly mammoth’ ready to write their final versions this week. They thought about the equipment they might need and what steps the reader would have to take to clean a mammoth. At home, the children could plan and write the instructions for someone to follow. Perhaps they could write a recipe? or write the instructions of how to make or grow something. We have been looking at how prepositions and imperative verbs are used in instructions. Prepositions and imperative verbs

Science
Our Science topic is ‘Rocks, Fossils and soils’. So far, the chn have collected, grouped, and learnt about different rock types and fossils. We are currently investigating ‘which soil is the best for planting?’. At home, the chn could collect a variety of soils and explore them – Can they work out what soils are made up of? Perhaps try growing something in the different soils to find out which one is the most successful for planting.

Topic- The Stone Age
Class 3 are learning more and more about The Stone Age each week, we have been focussing on how the Stone Age was split into three eras – Early/old (Paleolithic), middle (Mesolithic) and late/new Stone Age (Neolithic). Can the chn create a poster or fact page to explain each era and what was different about each one? Here is a useful website – https://www.theschoolrun.com/homework-help/the-stone-age

I will post a Home Learning post like this one onto the website each week for any children that may be self isolating. This is not homework for those who are still attending school, it is just some resources and information for those chn who may need to access learning from home.

Thank you, Miss Taylor.

Home learning wb 19/10/20 (for any children having to self isolate)

The chn complete 1 day of a times table challenge booklet every morning at school, this week they are completing booklet 13 (day 1 is today) I have attached a copy of this booklet for the chn to complete if they would like to carry on at home.Ultimate Times Table Daily Practice 13 Booklet

Maths: – I have attached the relevant worksheets.
Our maths objectives for this week are:

Monday- To add and subtract 3-digit numbers and hundreds.Year-3-Autumn-Block-2-VF-Add-and-Subtract-100s
Tuesday- To add ones, tens and hundredsQuestions (The chn only need to complete 1 or 2 of the grids on this sheet – they increase in difficulty)
Wednesday- To add and subtract numbers with up to three digits, using formal written methods Year-3-Autumn-Block-2-VF-2-Digit-and-3-Digit-Numbers
Thursday-Arithmetic test and focus on arithmetic practice (with written methods) Y3-Arithmetic-Half-Test-1b
Friday – PD Day

Literacy
We are on our last week of writing our own versions of a Stone Age girl joining modern day (based on the book ‘The Stone Age Boy’) The children will spend this week at school editing their drafts and having a go at performing their story to their peers. If children at home have managed to write their own version, perhaps they could write a script for a performance of their story? I have attached a blank script template. blank_playscript

Science
Our Science topic is ‘Rocks, Fossils and soils’. So far, the chn have collected, grouped, and learnt about different rock types. Now we have begun learning about what fossils are and where they might be found. At school we have created trace fossils using clay and toy dinosaurs to create footprints. Saltdough fossils may be a good activity to recognise how a trace fossil would have been created and preserved over time. Here are the instructions for a saltdough ‘fossil. https://www.littlepassports.com/craft-diy/make-dinosaur-fossils-using-salt-dough/

Topic- The Stone Age
We are just starting to learn about the people who lived in the Stone Age era. The children could create an informative factpage about what they know/can find out about this period of History. Can they add a timeline of historical periods that followed the Stone Age? Perhaps they could include some information about the three eras within the Stone Age period.

I will post a Home Learning post like this one onto the website each week for any children that may be self isolating. This is not homework for those who are still attending school, it is just some resources and information for those chn who may need to access learning from home.

Thank you, Miss Taylor.

Class 3

Hi all,
We have had a brilliant first week in Class 3 ! The children have all been fantastic.
They have adapted quickly to the changes in their usual school routine and listened carefully to the new school rules to help keep themselves and others safe.

The children will be bringing home their new reading books on Monday.
They will have a reading book that is chosen to suit their reading ability and they will also be able to choose a ‘sharing’ book of their choice. The sharing book is to encourage the children to read for enjoyment and share the book with adults/siblings at home 🙂

Class 3s PE day is Monday. Please can the children come to school in their PE kit and suitable footwear for PE. They will be staying in their PE kit all day.

Well done again to my new, and very grown up Year 3s.

Miss Taylor
