This week’s Literacy tasks for home learning will be based on a short film clip of a story called ‘The Tiny Crusader’, I have attached it below.
Monday – LO: To explore the story of ‘The Tiny Crusader’
Before today’s task, you will need to watch the video of ‘The Tiny Crusader’ it is only very short so you may want to watch it twice. You will only need a piece of paper and pencil for this task.Â
Task – Discuss what happens in this story with someone else in your household and record your thoughts as a mind map. Write the title ‘The Tiny Crusader’ in the middle of your paper and fill the page around it with your ideas and perhaps the answers to these questions: What is the elderly man’s job ?, Is Ulric (the man) happy? why/why not?, Do you think this story is true?, What is a ‘crusader’?, Where do you think the Knight came from? – Record any other ideas, questions or comments that this short story made you think of.Â
Tuesday – LO: To write a diary entry of ‘a day in the life of Ulric’Â
Today I would like you to write a diary entry as if you were Ulric the blacksmith. The diary entry is going to be about Ulric’s day in the film when a tiny knight turns up at his workshop. Write the diary entry as if you are Ulric and you are writing about this day.
Your diary entry will need to be written in first person, using the pronouns I, me, myself as you are imagining you are the blacksmith. You will also need to write in past tense, imagine that it is the end of the day and you are writing about what happened earlier on. Here are some Diary writing helpful hints-Â Helpful Hints
Here is a video of Michael Rosen (Author) talking about recount writing and the features that are included when writing about past events (you may have already watched this for the previous diary home learning task a few weeks ago so you won’t need to watch it again). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re0pCqUZu9w
Wednesday – LO: To write a character description for Ulric or the ‘Tiny crusader’.Â
Today’s task is to think about the characters in more detail and write a description about one or both of them. You will need a piece of paper and a pencil or you may print and use this Character profile template if you would like to.
A character description should be about the character’s appearance (what they look like) and their personality traits (what they are like). You may want to watch the video clip again and pause it to get a good look at the character you would like to write about.
To describe either character’s appearance, you will need to choose powerful adjectives to describe what they look like – here are some adjective ideas Character description adjectives
Writing about the character’s personality is a little more difficult as you don’t know much about them from just a short video, however you can use your imagination to write about what you think they would be like. Use adjectives and perhaps similes to describe the character. Put them together as descriptive sentences to make your writing interesting and powerful, e.g. The Knight is extremely brave, although he is petrified of spiders and runs away as quick as a flash if he hears their footsteps.
Thursday – LO: To rewrite the story of ‘The Tiny Crusader’ as a comic stripÂ
Today’s task is to rewrite the story as a comic strip, print and use one of these templates if you would like to – Comic strip or you can use plain paper.
A ‘comic strip’ tells a story using pictures of its main events and uses ‘snippets’ of writing that help to tell the reader what is happening in each part.
For your comic strip, you will need to decide what parts of ‘The Tiny Crusader’ you will be writing about. What needs to be at the beginning? perhaps a drawing of Ulric and a short description about him. After that, perhaps a picture of Ulric’s blacksmith tools and a sentence or two about his job, then continue drawing and describing the key events to make sure that your comic strip still tells the full story.
Friday
Friday’s lessons every week will be for Free writing (children’s choice of how and what to write about) –Â They could write a poem, story, recipe, list, diary etc. If any children would like a writing focus and haven’t completed them all already, then they can choose a Literacy task from their ROMAN ACTIVITY GRID.
Spellings – If you would like to continue with spelling practice at home, I will attach our spelling words – Year 3 Term 2A Spelling Overview for this term.
Reading– I would encourage the children to continue reading as much as they can while they are at home (however I understand it may be a little more difficult at the moment). I posted a reading challenge on Friday for the children to complete over the next few weeks if they would like to, I thought it might give them a bit of motivation to continue reading 🙂 I have also attached some useful comprehension questions for adults to ask their child/children as they read to develop their understanding – Reading questions
Again, please send any work that the children complete or if you have any questions, please email Class3@shawburystmarys.co.uk
Thank you, Miss Taylor
