Friday – Arithmetic test and focus on arithmetic practice (with written methods) Y3-Arithmetic-Half-Test-2b

Literacy
Last week in school, the children planned their own instructions of ‘How to wash a woolly mammoth’ ready to write their final versions this week. They thought about the equipment they might need and what steps the reader would have to take to clean a mammoth. At home, the children could plan and write the instructions for someone to follow. Perhaps they could write a recipe? or write the instructions of how to make or grow something. We have been looking at how prepositions and imperative verbs are used in instructions. Prepositions and imperative verbs

Science
Our Science topic is ‘Rocks, Fossils and soils’. So far, the chn have collected, grouped, and learnt about different rock types and fossils. We are currently investigating ‘which soil is the best for planting?’. At home, the chn could collect a variety of soils and explore them – Can they work out what soils are made up of? Perhaps try growing something in the different soils to find out which one is the most successful for planting.

Topic- The Stone Age
Class 3 are learning more and more about The Stone Age each week, we have been focussing on how the Stone Age was split into three eras – Early/old (Paleolithic), middle (Mesolithic) and late/new Stone Age (Neolithic). Can the chn create a poster or fact page to explain each era and what was different about each one? Here is a useful website – https://www.theschoolrun.com/homework-help/the-stone-age

I will post a Home Learning post like this one onto the website each week for any children that may be self isolating. This is not homework for those who are still attending school, it is just some resources and information for those chn who may need to access learning from home.

Thank you, Miss Taylor.

Tuesday- To add ones, tens and hundredsQuestions (The chn only need to complete 1 or 2 of the grids on this sheet – they increase in difficulty)

Thursday-Arithmetic test and focus on arithmetic practice (with written methods) Y3-Arithmetic-Half-Test-1b
Friday – PD Day

Literacy
We are on our last week of writing our own versions of a Stone Age girl joining modern day (based on the book ‘The Stone Age Boy’) The children will spend this week at school editing their drafts and having a go at performing their story to their peers. If children at home have managed to write their own version, perhaps they could write a script for a performance of their story? I have attached a blank script template. blank_playscript

Science
Our Science topic is ‘Rocks, Fossils and soils’. So far, the chn have collected, grouped, and learnt about different rock types. Now we have begun learning about what fossils are and where they might be found. At school we have created trace fossils using clay and toy dinosaurs to create footprints. Saltdough fossils may be a good activity to recognise how a trace fossil would have been created and preserved over time. Here are the instructions for a saltdough ‘fossil. https://www.littlepassports.com/craft-diy/make-dinosaur-fossils-using-salt-dough/

Topic- The Stone Age
We are just starting to learn about the people who lived in the Stone Age era. The children could create an informative factpage about what they know/can find out about this period of History. Can they add a timeline of historical periods that followed the Stone Age? Perhaps they could include some information about the three eras within the Stone Age period.

I will post a Home Learning post like this one onto the website each week for any children that may be self isolating. This is not homework for those who are still attending school, it is just some resources and information for those chn who may need to access learning from home.

Thank you, Miss Taylor.

Class 3

Hi all,
We have had a brilliant first week in Class 3 ! The children have all been fantastic.
They have adapted quickly to the changes in their usual school routine and listened carefully to the new school rules to help keep themselves and others safe.

The children will be bringing home their new reading books on Monday.
They will have a reading book that is chosen to suit their reading ability and they will also be able to choose a ‘sharing’ book of their choice. The sharing book is to encourage the children to read for enjoyment and share the book with adults/siblings at home 🙂

Class 3s PE day is Monday. Please can the children come to school in their PE kit and suitable footwear for PE. They will be staying in their PE kit all day.

Well done again to my new, and very grown up Year 3s.

Miss Taylor

Looking forward to September

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a term it’s been! Nobody could have predicted at the start of the academic year that the ending would be so disruptive, surreal and sad. We feel as a staff, that we have missed out on so many of our usual summer traditions: Proms, t-shirt signings, sports day, Leavers assembly, class move up days, induction and all the other lovely happenings at this time of the year.

We hope you understand that this has been a difficult time for us to plan for as we have often been left in the dark by the government and have received no more information than you and have tried our very best.

Fortunately, September will be a  new term, we will be able to bring everyone back together and welcome new members of staff and new roles for staff: Miss Shadbolt in Year 2 and Miss Davies in Reception/Year 1, Miss Thelwell has become our new nursery manager and Miss Leech will add Teaching and Learning Lead to her Deputy, SENCO and Literacy roles.

St Mary’s will continue, with your support, to strive to be a happy, safe and the friendly environment that we have always been known for.

Sadly, some things have changed, hopefully not for long. The layout of the school, the routines and day to day running is different, but lots of things will remain the same: familiar faces, children laughing in the playground and making us smile in the classroom. We will still be St Mary’s!

I hope the information below is not too alarming, but we do need to let you know of the changes that will be in place.

Parent information 16072020

We are all in this together. Stay safe until we meet again in September.

Mr Verling and all the staff at St Mary’s.

More Fantastic Work

Hi Class 5,

I hope you are all having a lovely half term. The weather is set to be beautiful so enjoy the sunshine. I received a lovely email from Sam yesterday. Sam has been hard at work keeping fit, planting vegetables and writing – your diary entry is brilliant Sam!

Let us know how your vegetables are getting on.

Stay safe and keep smiling

Mrs Duncan 🙂
