Class 3 Weekly Update

What a fantastic week in KS1.

In maths Year 1 have finished their unit on multiplication and division, looking at the steps they need to take before learning times tables formally in Year 2. We started our new topic of fractions on Friday, and Miss Styles bought some treats to share but there wasn’t enough! Luckily we had been learning about halving so we split them so everyone got an equal part. Year 2 have been learning about unit and non-unit fractions. Their understanding to this is great. We have also learnt thirds and quarters and finding fractions of an amount.

In literacy we have published our alternative endings to our class book ‘There’s a rang-tan in my bedroom’. The children have tried hard with their handwriting and have focused well.

In geography we have learnt about populations in Brazil, and the push and pull factors that affect the population numbers.

In Music we have been learning songs from the British Isles. Class 3 were very good at learning My Bonnie lies over the Ocean, and we added in some actions.

Reminders:

  • Book in everyday for reading
  • Move up day on Tuesday 2nd July
  • Open evening to meet your child’s new class teacher – Tuesday 2nd July 3:15-4:30pm
  • PE will just be on Friday next week due to move up day.

Have a lovely weekend 😊

Miss Styles

History in STARS

Well done to some Year 3 children who have begun construction on a Lego pyramid in STARS. They are currently creating the burial chamber section, which includes: a sarcophagus, canopic jars, death mask, entrance and Anubis statues to guard the body. Can’t wait to see your finished piece!

Performing poetry

This week Year 3 and 4 are looking at a collection of poems by award winning author Zaro Weil from her book ‘When Poems fall from the sky’. Towards the end of the week, they will be writing their own poems inspired by Weil linked to their current PSHE unit of work on relationships and friendships.

Well done to Lucy and Evan on an excellent performance of the poem ‘Tell me Shadow’. I can’t wait to see how you are inspired by this poem when creating your own poem.

Class 1 Weekly Update

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are delighted to share the exciting progress our children have made over the past weeks. In our recent phonics assessment, we are thrilled to report that the majority of our students have moved up at least one book level! It’s a testament to their hard work and dedication, and we couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishments.

This week, our writing journey took us into the captivating world of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” Exploring this classic tale, the children had a blast recounting the journey of the ravenous caterpillar through the days of the week. Not only did this activity help reinforce the sequence of days, but it also expanded their vocabulary, with terms like “chrysalis” sparking curiosity and engagement.

Adding to the excitement, we introduced some temporary class pets – our very own caterpillars! Over the past two weeks, we’ve observed their transformation into chrysalis, eagerly awaiting the emergence of new minibeasts in the coming weeks. It’s been a wonderful hands-on experience, enriching our understanding of life cycles and fostering a deeper connection with nature.

In mathematics, our focus has been on the composition of five. Taking the next step in their mathematical journey, some children are now confidently writing number equations to accompany their pictorial diagrams. It’s been remarkable to witness their growth in mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.

In our afternoon sessions, our “Into the Woods” topic has sparked endless curiosity and creativity. Aligning with our literacy focus on “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” we embarked on a delicious adventure by creating smoothies with the healthy foods the caterpillar enjoyed. The children enthusiastically honed their fine motor skills by chopping up fruits, preparing them for the blender. And as they enjoyed their creations, they unanimously agreed with the caterpillar’s choices!

We’re immensely proud of the progress and enthusiasm displayed by our students across all areas of learning. Thank you for your continued support in nurturing their growth and curiosity.

Weekly Reminders:

  • PE – Tuesday & Thursday
  • Forest School – Wednesday
  • Reading Record Wallet – Everyday

Handwriting and Spelling Workshop

I would like to say thank you to all the parents who attended the recent spelling and handwriting workshop. A packed hall!. I hope you found it informative and gained insight into the high expectations and aspirations we have for all the children here at St Mary’s. This was a huge success and would like to hold another workshop in the near future focused on Mathematics. This will look at the importance of children having key mathematical facts ready to be retrieved from
long term memory to apply facts and methods to wider problem-solving.

Nursery Weekly Update

Hello everybody!

Thank you all for another amazing week in nursery.

The children are thoroughly enjoying our new topic ‘All aboard’. They have been using some phenomenal new vocabulary in their discussions and have even led their own enquiry this week! We looked deeper into how wheels rotate on vehicles, with some children suggesting that wheels are glued to the side of a vehicle and some children arguing that this was not the case, stating that the steering wheel or engine is responsible for them turning. This led to us learning more about wheels and axles and eventually creating junk model vehicles with moving parts.

On Tuesday, the children brought their bikes and scooters into school for us to experience some other types of road transport. The children had a wonderful time riding in the outdoor area. They learnt about the role of lollipop people and traffic officers and even took turns to regulate our roads!

We were also extremely fortunate to have had two special visits from some of our wonderful parents who were keen to provide the children with some real-life experiences of land transport vehicles. On Thursday the children were able to see a tractor up-close and were amazed to realise the sheer size of the vehicle, with several children commenting on how ginormous the wheels were and how high-up they felt! All children were given the opportunity to climb inside the cab to see some of the features and pretend to drive. On Friday, the children were again extremely lucky to have a lorry cab arrive at nursery. Again they each had the opportunity to climb inside and see what features were inside. The children asked some wonderful questions about the vehicle and were again amazed at the size! Thank you so much to both parents for providing the children with such amazing experiences.

Next week we are very much looking forward to visiting RAF Shawbury to see even more vehicles! I was extremely impressed with the children’s listening and attention skills this week whilst they were patiently waiting for their turn. They were all extremely ready, respectful and safe which I am sure will continue on Monday.

In maths, the children have been revisiting subitising. Again they have blown me away with their knowledge and skills, all confidently able to subitise to 2 and beyond. Some of the older children have been developing expert reasoning skills to subitise larger quantities of up to 6! Amazing work.

In the forest, the children have been using natural resources to create a road suitable for road transport vehicles.

Notices:

RAF visit – Monday. We will be leaving school around 9:10am and expect to return for 11:30am. Please ensure that children are dressed suitably with comfortable footwear, a warm coat (preferably with a hood) and cold weather clothing such as a hat, gloves and a scarf.

PE – Tuesday and Thursday

Show and tell – Friday

Have a great weekend!

Many thanks,

Mrs Jones.
