This half term, Class 4&5 have been working hard to answer their Enquiry Question:
‘How has transport changed over time and what impact has this had on people?’
To help us investigate, pupils became historians! They worked in groups to review their understanding of different modes of transport and explored how each one has developed over time.
Working in Groups
The classes split into four groups, each focusing on a different type of transport:
-
Trains
-
Cars
-
Planes
-
Space rockets
Each group discussed what they already knew. Throughout the lessons pupils examined a range of historical sources including photographs, fact sheets, timelines and information texts. We talked about how historians use evidence to learn about the past
Trains 🚂
The train group explored how rail travel began with steam locomotives such as those developed by George Stephenson in the early 19th century. They explained how early trains were powered by steam and coal, making them noisy and smoky, but revolutionary for their time.
Pupils compared early locomotives to modern high-speed electric trains and discussed how railways made it easier for people to travel long distances, transport goods and grow cities. They considered the impact of railways during the Industrial Revolution and how they changed where people lived and worked.
Cars 🚗
The car group researched early motor vehicles, including the first practical automobile created by Karl Benz. They explained how cars were once a luxury item for the wealthy but became more affordable with mass production, especially through the work of Henry Ford.
Pupils discussed how cars gave people independence and freedom to travel when and where they wanted. However, they also considered the negative impacts, such as traffic congestion, road accidents and pollution.
Planes ✈️
The aviation group investigated how powered flight began with Wright brothers in 1903. They compared early wooden aircraft to today’s commercial aeroplanes that can carry hundreds of passengers across the world in hours.
The group explained how air travel has made the world feel smaller, helping people to go on holiday abroad, connect with family overseas and transport goods quickly. They also discussed environmental concerns and how air travel contributes to climate change.
Space Rockets 🚀
Our final group explored space travel, beginning with the development of powerful rockets in the 20th century. They looked at the historic Apollo missions led by NASA, including Apollo 11, which first landed humans on the Moon.
Pupils explained how space exploration has improved scientific knowledge, satellite technology and communication systems. They also discussed how space travel inspires innovation and encourages people to imagine the future.
Presenting Like Historians
Each group presented their findings to the class. Pupils were encouraged to:
-
Speak clearly and confidently
-
Use historical vocabulary
-
Include accurate facts
-
Refer to the sources they had studied
-
Explain both positive and negative impacts
They did an excellent job of “speaking like historians”, backing up their ideas with evidence and explaining how transport has changed over time.
What Did We Conclude?
By the end of our enquiry, Class 5 agreed that:
-
Transport has become faster, safer and more accessible over time.
-
It has helped people travel further and connect more easily.
-
It has supported trade, industry and global communication.
-
However, it has also created challenges such as pollution and environmental damage.
We are incredibly proud of how thoughtfully pupils worked in their groups and how confidently they shared their learning. Their historical thinking skills are really developing, and they demonstrated excellent teamwork throughout the project.
Well done, Classes 4&5!
