This week, we have been focusing on the delightful story “Dear Zoo” by Rod Campbell. The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the narrative and discussing their own experiences of visiting zoos and safari parks. Our class discussions were lively, with the children eagerly sharing their favourite animals and memorable moments from their zoo visits. It was wonderful to see them engaged and enthusiastic about the story.
In maths, the children excelled at counting the number of animals they were playing with and confidently told me the total. They practiced their counting skills with enthusiasm, demonstrating some great progress in their numerical understanding. They really enjoyed counting the animals that they had put in their zoos that they had created.
During the week, the children showed some real creativity by coming up with alternative endings for the story “Dear Zoo.” It was delightful to hear their imaginative ideas and hear them explain their ideas. This was a great opportunity for the children to practice their listening and speaking skills. The children worked really had at this and their alternative endings were both inventive and entertaining.
The children created beautiful lift-the-flap pages, replicating the interactive style of “Dear Zoo.” They also made lovely handprint animals, which added a personal touch to their artwork. These activities not only fostered their creativity but also enhanced their fine motor skills.
