Today in Singing for Enrichment Fridays it was musical week! We looked at the origins of musical theatre and it was amazing to know that even in Ancient Greek and Tudor/Elizabethan times plays included music. We even saw how William Shakespeare included songs in his works. We saw how the actors/actresses have to change their voices to suit the character they play, so musicals differ in styles. Before we began to sing, we looked at the different jobs in musical theatre. We found out about what directors do, musical directors, costume designers and chorographers. All of these jobs are very important in musical theatre and we even looked on Google maps where The West End was, where most musical shows are shown in London.
After we learnt about the history, we then learnt the songs:
‘I just can’t wait to be king’ from The Lion King
‘When I grow up’ from Matilda
‘Defying Gravity’ from Wicked
It was fascinating to sing the songs and see how the actors/actress then sung them on the West End.
