Read a bad description out about a dress that you really liked from a shop e.g. “It was a great dress” – and ask your child to draw it on a piece of scrap paper.
Then read a good description out about a dress e.g. “It was the most beautiful dress, it was long, bright yellow and had tiny little daisy flowers all over it” – ask your child to draw it on a piece of scrap paper.
Discuss the importance of description and how much better the second description was to support your child’s drawing.
Look at a fancy dress costume from the story (examples on the teaching slides) and write a description of a chosen costume. Reinforce the importance of adjectives and if you use two adjectives in a row, put a comma in between (Year 2 need to know this).
Year 2: Children to choose 3 costumes to write 1 or 2 sentences to describe. Remember adjectives, and, but & because to extend your sentences.
