Our intent – What we want to deliver
At St Mary’s C of E Primary School and Nursery, the intention of our MFL curriculum is to develop an interest for other languages. We aim to introduce the learning of the French language and the understanding of its culture in enjoyable and stimulating
ways. We hope to embed the essential skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. We aim to build the children’s knowledge of the French culture so that they are aware of similarities and differences between France and the UK. In short, we hope to lay the foundations for future language learning.
Our implementation – How we are going to deliver the MFL curriculum
Our MFL curriculum has been designed to progressively develop skills in French. We
are currently using Primary Languages Network to deliver French lessons. They ensure development is progressive as they build on previous knowledge from units already
studied. All children in KS2 are taught French in a weekly discreet lesson. KS1 children are introduced to MFL through exploring other languages informally when studying another country. We will also aim to complete the register in French using Bonjour… and bonne après-midi so that the children are exposed to common greetings.
The impact
The children will have a love of languages and an excitement around learning a new language. It will help with inclusiveness of those children who are EAL, as it will encourage the children to share and celebrate their languages too.
