We have recently started our new topic on sustainability in geography, focusing on the impact of human activities on the environment. To begin, we explored plastic pollution in our local area, examining how waste can accumulate and affect ecosystems. We discussed how plastic litter, if not properly disposed of, can be carried by wind and water into rivers, eventually making its way to the ocean. This pollution harms marine life and contributes to the global crisis of plastic waste in our seas.
To deepen our understanding, we used OS maps to track the flow of rivers, identifying their source and endpoint. By following the natural course of waterways, we were able to see how rivers connect different landscapes and transport materials, including pollution, over long distances. This activity helped us understand how local environmental issues, such as littering, can have far-reaching effects, highlighting the importance of sustainable practices to protect our water systems and oceans.
